cheers, next thing I need to do is tackle the VW T5, but that's a very big job. The fibreglass pop top roof is discolouring too so I need to find something to correct the red paint on there, I've tried a few things so far and while most fix it at the time, the red fades to pink again after a couple of days

Sounds like a big job on the T5.

Sorry - I have not personally worked on any fibreglass restore projects.

I'm sure there may be some products to help; but if the fading is very advanced - you may struggle.

A quick look around suggests that there are a few gelcoat/fibreglass products for boat and caravan applications.

... perhaps time to look at a vinyl wrap option? Assuming its a real annoyance of course.

it's not that bad yet, it was faded very badly but I seem to have stopped it. It's only three years old so shouldn't be this bad yet. I am going to ask the factory whether it is a gelcoat or what it is they have done just to make sure I am doing the right thing.

If I go down any route I fancy resparying the top half of the T5 white to give it the retro look

Wow - only 3 years old! Not good - have you been in for VW to inspect the paint?

I had assumed it was a bit older than this initially....

If you do manage to get an improvement on the finish - then perhaps your next step

should be to step up your LSP UV protection layer. Improve the roof cleaning/protecting routine?

...just suggestions of course

As someone who has had extensive experience of working with and restoring fibreglass (boats) once the Gel coat fades there is nothing that will bring it back

Usually a two pack paint is applied to a freshly sanded and prepared gel coat surface

I suggest that this is the way forward with your T5

I have seen this done very successfully on boats, so see no reason why the same cannot be achieved on a vehicle

Good luck

I'm not sure it is a gel coat, it's not a VW roof but a third party one (SCA roofs) from Jerba campers, I think it is a straight forward paint on a plastic roof. Need to find out some more. I tried meguiars ultimate compound with a DA polisher and it made a massive difference but then it seemed to fade a bit again. I tried bilt hamber auto balm on top of a small section and it seems to have really helped prevent it re fading.

But the Gtechniq P1 claims to do the work of a cutting compound, medium compound and sealant glaze so I may try that and then add the C2v3 on top as the results on the octavia look great. But then that's a brand new car so it should look good.

If it stays dry this weekend then I may try claying the VW roof and then hit it with the Gtechniq stuff.

Slightly different angle, but still getting my beads out!

Taken from the underside of my sunroof ( Mk3 TSI VRS hatch) whilst it was raining.

Snow foamed, washed with McGuire's Gold car shampoo, toweled dry, McGuire's Ultimate polish then finished off with Callonite 476s.

While on the subject, is it worth putting a sealer coat over the top of all that?

Something like AG Extra Gloss protection.

If so what?

Chris - the roof is gel coat then sprayed with paint over the top so I presume all the usual car products are best rather than anything specific for gel coat?

If painted already then I don't see why not ....should be fine

phew that's what I thought. Just need the rain to stay away this weekend. I can get the Octavia under cover but not the T5
