Nasty windscreen wipers

Featured Replies

I have had to replace the windscreen wipers on my 2012 Yeti. They are obviously the original ones but in my opinion the should have lasted longer.

They were both split and the drivers side was split right in the middle by the fixing clip.

They have been replaced with Bosch aerotwin blades.

Anyone else had to replace their wiper blades prematurely?

Wonder if they will whistle in the wind like my new ones do  :wonder:

how long should they last? - dependant on hours of use? - mine needed replacement all round at about 2 yrs! Used valeo, here in france few non french prods, but have been as good if not better!

Mine lasted 2 yrs - replaced by Aerotwins - much better !

All manufactuers recomment annual replacement of windscreen wipers - irrespective of use - as the rubber actually degrades with exposure to (UV) light.

However I normally get a good 2 years use out of them, if using one of the premuim brands, before performance starts to drop off.

Wipers deteriorate more quickly in summer than winter, and I remember a thread on here previously where folk (Including me) were complaining about the original ones splitting quite early.

I tried the Bosch ones and they whistled. Now switched to valeo ones which are cheaper and much better. I posted a link to them a week or so ago as thy were on offers- £15 a set.

So they are potentially 2 years old and you are complaining?

I replace mine annually at the very least, and always with the Bosch ones. They've never whistled on mine.

My Bosch replacements whistle too but not until I reach 60mph. Maybe you need to drive a little faster :giggle:

Very doubtful.

No dual carriageways or motorways around here, and some of the roads you are doing well to reach 30!!

I change mine every year, if they are knackered or not. (they never are)

Exactly!!

It's not the fact that I have had to replace the wipers, its the poor state that they were in. I have never had to replace blades that has split like these had in such a short time.

Mind you I suppose they do work hard with the amout of rain we have had recently.

Unless you have replaced them with Skoda "branded" replacements, I think you'll find that you wont have the splitting problem again. Bosch seem to be more resistant to splits in the web.

BUT

Don't turn on the ignition on a frosty morning with out carefully checking that the wipers aren't frozen to the screen, and if they are, very gently free them first. One "feature" of VAG cars is that each time you start the engine, (and on some models each time you turn off again) the wipers move slightly on the screen to "prolong the life of the blades". Unfortunately, in the right (wrong) conditions, it can also cause the blades to split.

Just one of the joys of a manufacturer that trys to solve a problem that for most of us doesn't exist in the first place but then creates another!

The OEM wipers on my Yeti were utterly useless almost since new, so much so that I am quite convinced some funny business happened before I took delivery. The passenger side was especially bad, creating really bad streaks from new. I am thinking that someone probably swapped them with used ones and used my new ones on another car. Couldn't be bothered to go back and kick up a fuss, as the dealership was generally useless.

I have now replaced them with Bosch Aerotwins and am a happy camper - they work perfectly, and I have not noticed any whistling so far.

When I picked my car up at the weekend my wipers were streaking really badly, I was going to buy some new ones yesterday but thought I'd try the old vinegar trick ( a cloth soaked in vinegar wiped along the blade) and the result was noticeably better.

So then I went one better and used some showroom shine glass cleaner, now the windows are completely smear free and water and dirt just bead off them.

Could be worth a try if your having similar problems.

[Wish I could read your speech bubbles, Dinski!}

Change mine every year too.

Hate having smeary wipers.

Use bosch ones and they don't whistle. Wonder if there's something to do with the shape of the Yeti etc that make them whistle?

Just changed the full set on the Octy.

OE and been on the car for 18 months. I normally fit new ones every year and should have changed them sooner.

Went for Valeo, which did squeak and judder a bit for the first few drives but are silent now.

Original blades and replacements from Skoda are made by Valeo.

I change mine annually as a matter of course.

Bosch Aerotwins are better and last longer.

mine have been on since August 2011 and work fine to this day..   it must be the long distance driving and the fact they can be on for a couple of hours at a time maybe?

I don't do long distances, or for long periods, so that one is out of the window.

Perhaps it is just some of us are happy to abide by the suggestion of changing them annually, because we know the effects just being out in all weathers has on them.

Yes I had to get new wipers on 2012 Yeti . So Bosch aero  did the job. Motorfactor charge  E43  Halford  E36 and Micks Garage on line E29. Funny though

when I had Octy ii the Parts dept in what was my Skoda dealer I was told not to buy OE but to get Bosch !! Makes you think.
