Illogical Insurance Quotes

Featured Replies

It didn't seem five minutes ago that the lad was taking to the road on his moped but already he is staring down the barrel of 17 and looking out for a car. Getting on for twelve months experience on the road and is totally claim free.

Sharing my love for VW i've managed to find an immaculate mars red 1.1 Mk1 Golf which he has fallen for. Initially he was going to have an Arosa/ Lupo like his sister, however I know from comments that he covets my Mk2 and the idea of a Mk1 ticks every box for him. Simple enough to work on, cheap enough to fix when it goes wrong. Problem is even having him as a named driver on a policy in my name with my full NCB I can't get the insurance below £3k. A similar quote on an un-monitored Lupo/ Arosa comes out around £1900

I cannot fathom it for the life of me. I expected it to be more but not getting on this disparity. Co-Op won't touch it due to its age and the fitting of the GPS. With black box monitoring it comes in at less than I paid for my first premium all those years ago but that is obvious. .

Any ideas what might be wrong? The Golf ultimately is less powerful, no more able to perform power burn outs, cheaper to run, cheaper to fix and worth less to start with. It will be kept at the same address as my cars on which the wife, daughter and I pay minimal insurance costs on.

Get an online quote with him listed as a woman, then do the same with him listed as a man.

Then ring the insurance up and ask them why they this is legal still ;)

Have you tried to get a quote for him:

  - Fully comp

  - Excess for him is higher than the value of the car (say £500-800)

  - Put his mum or you on the car as a named driver

  - Add an aftermarket alarm and imobiliser, locking wheel nuts etc.

The fully comp with a stonking excess is usually cheaper than the TPFT in my experience.

Also what about wait until after he has had his moped insurance and 1year NCD, then try that insurer.

I didn't think you could use your NCD on another car, unless of course it's not being used on anything else and under 2 years since a policy in your own name with them? Perhaps back in the day the 1.1 Golf was involved in lots of accidents or it's the fact that it prob has none of the modern safety features. I am sure they look at things like how likely passengers and pedestrians are to be more seriously injured and claim in the event etc.

Have you tried classic insurance with limited mileage and so on? It has always been a nightmare to get cover for 17 year olds once 18 more doors seem to open insurance wise.

Might be worth giving classicline a ring, although i wasnt that young they still insured me under the "normal" age needed for classic cars at a very good price. Think I paid £400 on a 5k limited mileage policy on a ford capri aged 20. (bearing in mind the year before it was 1.8k as named driver!)

We had the same issue when my son passed his test £3.5k to add him to the Clio insurance, so he never got the keys. It seems most insurers just don't want lads under 21.

All his mates with their own cars got black boxes fitted which monitored their driving and the conditions of the policy prevented them from driving in the early hours when most youngsters come a cropper. That got their insurance down to around £1k

Ain't just the young ones. I was getting quoted well over a thousand for my Polo tpft, then I did a comprehensive quote... £84.

Cheezemonkai, have just tried it with him listed as female, has gone up to £3900!!! I'm not certain that mc insurance is transferable to cars as a friend recently made the leap from mc to car after six years. His NCB counted for nowt. I'd opted for fully comp quotes after going through this rigmarole last year.

May just contact my classic insurers and see what they think, I seriously cannot believe that a thirty two year old car could be seen as such a risk- especially given that they've not been around in significant numbers for some twenty years. I'd be like screwing someone on a Rover 110 because they were rampant in the 50s. As Steve mentioned with his Polo, mine was newer but insuring the eldest on it was a nightmare. Given that nobody under the age of 70 ever bought them when they were new I struggle to believe they were much of a risk.

Dan i'll be in touch

When i turned 17 i used my moped NCD on my first car policy made a hell of a difference i think that was direct line. I thought most insurers accepted bike NCD

I find newer cars generally give cheaper quotes. And sometimes it seems the groups mean sweet FA.

Maybe just a case of trying all sorts of different cars until you can find one he can insure for a reasonable amount, and he'll have to run that for a few years until he builds a NCD?

It could be the problem is the insurers don't have much data on the Golf and therefore they're safeguarding their unknown risk with a higher price.  I had a friend with a brand new Renault Laguna RXE 1.8 a few years ago who had a lot of trouble insuring it initially as that spec/engine combination was very rare and didn't appear on their systems so he either stupidly high quotes or no offer of insurance at all.   The year after it was fine as insurers had it on their system and could give normal quotes.

I'll double check this then, thank you. A quick call to Peter James in the morning will be in order, fingers crossed as the lad is gutted he's being forced towards what he doesn't really want.
