What fuel are people using in theie vRS TSI- 95 OR 98 etc.

Featured Replies

Are you sure it is 98 ron and not Super unleaded 97 ron. Minimum.

Tesco Monentum 99,

is Super Unleaded 99 ron minimum, and winter spec from the Depot November till March.

'Much cheapness' and they tell you the Formula, unlike Shell V-Power Nitro.

Obviously they all meet the Minimum Spec required,

But Shell do not tell you their additives.

Is Sodium actually a great additive, 'You Decide' !.

  • I always use 98 when possible if I have to use 95 I only put enough in the tank to get home then top up 98 again.

  • From page 192 owners manual On vehicles using prescribed unleaded petrol of min. 95 RON, the use of petrol with a higher octane number than 95 RON can increase the power and reduce fuel consumption.

Will check it out George to be absolutely sure.

However, it is higher rating than that specified on filler label.(95 RON)

So not sure what hair splitting there is between 97 & 98 RON. in terms of performance and economy.

Cheers

There is a benefit from 99 Octane, and no doubt. (in cars that appreciate it)

& it is not expensive @ an extra £2.50-£3.00 a tank if you do notice an extra 20-30 mile range from 10 gallons..

A Fabias vRS has a Prescribed 98 ron, and all EU Type Approved must run on 95 ron.

Very different running in a Twincharger between 97 & with 99,   and on Mainland Europe better again

on 100-102 ron.

George,

Confirmation today that Sainsbury's Super Unleaded is a minimum of 97 RON.

So perhaps now it will be another tank test period with Tesco Momentum 99.

March test tanks coming up.

Are you on Fuelly vrskeith ?, we could look at the graphs then and see for ourselves although, not a vRS I'll only be feed my 1.4 TSI 99ron from Tesco's I pass them on the way to work and for 5 p/p/l its really not worth not doing it.

What are your figures from the 1.4 TSI?

Not sure as yet, only picked it up yesterday with a 1/4 tank of something already in it, its been filled with 99ron now so, I guess we'll just have to see.  Yesterdays I only did 50 miles, 15 on the motorway coming home & 35 round'n'about, mostly cruising with the in-laws in the car but, I did manage 3 miles in sport.  Car said 37.1 mpg but fuelly will tell more later.

Enjoy the new motor!

Weekend drive today mixed Motorway & A & B,SPLIT 60 / 40. Total miles covered  280,at an average speed of 47.5mph ,returning at 39.5 mpg.

So this proves the point of the motorway cruising reduces  the consumption, provided you don't progress beyond 85 to many times.

Read out suggests 35 miles left in tank, so using this and the miles covered suggests 415 miles per tank.

However , I will see more accurately tomorrow when I fill her up.

Note! my last two entries show that, local commute and shopping trips gives an average of approx.34.5 mpg but all round , as above 39.5 mpg, gives a 14 % improvement.

  • Author

Tank to tank figure which included the one longer motorway trip gave a consumption of 35.8 mpg. According to tank indicator read out, that would have given me 405 miles from the tank to tank  (0 level.)

That's 280 miles motorway and A and 125 local/commute A & B.

Had to fill up again with Sainsbury's Super Unleaded (97 RON) but Next tank will be Tesco Momentum 99 RON ,suggested by George.

Another 200 mile trip yesterday down to the South Coast, great A and B road drive through Wilts, Hampshire and Dorset.

Average fuel consumption 37.9 mpg and average speed 34.7 mph. system readout. on Sainsbury's Super Unleaded, prior to tank change to Tesco 99 RON, at the recommendation of George .

Currently, Filler neck to Filler neck refill, suggests a mileage of approx. 420 miles ,not unhappy with that.

That indicates an improvement over 95 RON.

VRSKeith,

I think your car is starting to like the good stuff!

I wonder how it will act when you put 95 ron back in?

Looking forward to the 99Ron results, I pass both Sainsbury's & Tesco's daily so I'm kinda spoilt for choice really & could do with an opinion of which is better.

... could do with an opinion of which is better.

.

Which is the cheaper?

Despite being skeptical regarding the possible benefits of running higher than 95 RON fuel within a car designed to run perfectly 95 RON, I am giving it a try.

Brand new VRS TSI manual on it's first full tank of Shell V-Power Nitro+ (after running delivery fuel down to the dregs). So far I have traveled 231 miles at an average of 27.3mpg. Approximately  80 miles were on the motorway where it seemed to do late 30's at ~70mph.

I'll give it 3x tanks on the posh stuff before testing budget 95 RON.

Sainsbury's Super Unleaded last Cost me £1.319 / ltr.

Think that is cheaper than Tesco' Momentum in the Swindon Area.

Will quote an accurate figure when I fill up with Momentum

Orville, don't forget the engine should loosen up in the first few k. So if you notice a difference the way around you are testing ( assuming the high octane turns out better) then you really are getting an improvement.

Sainsbury's use BP fuel with fewer additives.

Not planning to try with my 1.2 fabia, but I can report that both of my older 5-cylinder 20v Volvos (n/a 850 and S70 LPT) ran much better, smoother and noticeably perkier on V Power than 95. Definitely not a placebo.

.

Which is the cheaper?

Tesco's a penny more @The Meadows on the A30 near Camberly than Sainsbury's heading back to the M3 generally, Sainsbury's is a penny less but, its a weaker octane so I'm trying to figure if the 50p per tank extra shows up in the milage.  Basically, any reason to run rocket fuel and I'm on it.

Sainsbury's use BP fuel with fewer additives.

I quite like additives, they ain't there for nothing, its kinda like a 47 year old postman running on roids & Anit-flams or just a pure healthy diet, medical evidence may suggest one thing but, the way you feel suggests something completely different.

Unfortunately I've not been able to fill with Momentum yet.

However, my last tank - tank results have shown 36.5 mpg( Sainsbury's Super Unleaded), which was made up of mainly local commute and normal local shopping trips.

This is now suggesting to me, that the higher octane is producing improved economy in day to day running approx. 5%.

Some of that improvement may also be related to the engine easing up , as now at 6500 miles in 6.5 months of ownership.

So on going testing will be 3 tanks of Momentum ,followed by reverting to 95 RON for comparison with a now eased up engine.

Note ! All the test mileage has been done in Normal Mode.

Note! Just compared the thread on here relating to the TDI Hatch- indicates approx. 10-15 mpg difference or approx. 130 miles per  tank.

I always put Shell V Power/V Power Nitro+ (what a name!) into my mildly modified MINI Cooper S (the one with the supercharged engine). It may not be scientific but the engine definitely feels better with the V Power. On the odd occasion that I've run too low, and have been forced to use ordinary 95, the engine just seems to get bogged down at low revs. It seems to take three full tanks of V Power to return to normal service. I'll start running the TSI on the same stuff as it has now been remapped.

Of course, I've never timed the car from 0-60, or 50-70, so I don't know how much power the engine is producing but ambient conditions (temperature, humidity), the quality of the road surface, traffic congestion, tyre pressure, the quality and age of thje engine oil, different size/weight wheels, the amount of crap you may or may not carry around, the number of pies you eat etc will all have an impact on fuel consumption.

Having said all this, the MINI is pretty thirsty around town. But on a run, the fuel consumption is significantly better, even if you use the car as it was intended. I might be concerned if I drove 25,000km per year but at less that half that, the fuel consumption is not so much of a concern as is the range.

I'm hoping the Yeti will do better, but its all wheel drive, shaped like a brick, and it weighs 1500kg without the tow bar so I don't have any great hopes…

Just filled up yesterday with V-Power Nitro.

Last tank gave me 335 miles (all town & local driving this time) over 28 days. Fuel warning of 30 miles available on Maxidot.

My fuel log shows me adding 52.04 litres (brimmed it) & it returned an average of 29.26mpg, it's slowly improving with each fill up, it will be interesting to see what happens with a trip from Guildford to Calais & return on Monday.

Interesting: what miles on the clock.

Filled up mine this morning, 30 miles shown on readout ,as yours. Filled to top of neck, visible  at the top  of filler neck.  Filled Capacity 46.82 litres ,that is 410 miles from fill to fill.
