  • I always use 98 when possible if I have to use 95 I only put enough in the tank to get home then top up 98 again.

  • From page 192 owners manual On vehicles using prescribed unleaded petrol of min. 95 RON, the use of petrol with a higher octane number than 95 RON can increase the power and reduce fuel consumption.

Sorry about typo!

Bp super unleaded. Seems to pick up slightly better and averages about 3mpg better per tank which is offset by higher cost

Tesco momentum

Is that habit or convenience or good results?

Sainsbury's Finest 97 Ron.

Hi Keith

I have had a number of Tsi engines in the past GTI &S3 etc. Great engines I always found that super unleaded 98 oct+ seemed to work best. I think the manuals normally say the recommend 98 but 95 can be used. The full performance comes out with 98.

Around my area super plus is cheaper than diesel so why not..

Esso 97.

I used momentum in my markII and that went for 145K with no issues. I did notice a drop in response in the markII If I used 95octane or BP or Sainsbury super and consumption dropped so yes now a bit of a habit but based on past experience. Shell high octane also good but at a cost against Tesco

I'll be using Momentum in mine. Been using it in the Focus since I got it and have no issues.

I've been using Shell vpower in my Insignia VXR and intend to continue this trend when the vRS arrives.

I found it smoother and giving better mpg in the VXR so would hope for the same in the vRS.

If you can afford the extra I'd recommend the higher grade.

Bog standard unleaded. I'm not giving the darn money grabbing, penny pinching government anymore money by buying "Super" unleaded or whatever the brands like to call it.

I object to the amount of taxation we have to put up with now as motorists.

I don't have a vRS, but as a general rule if the book of words says use 98 RON then that is what you should use not only for the best performance but also the best efficiency. The engine will run perfectly fine on 95 RON but the anti-knock sensors will cause engine management to shift the timing off the optimum to compensate.

The engine in my sports car is set up for 98 RON and I notice the drop off in economy more than performance on the odd occasion I have to use 95 RON.

That's an interesting view ,The Wanderer.

I've run mine on 95 oct, as shown in filler cap and presumeably the manual.

Stick on Normal setting for 95% of the time with the 5% blast for clearout.

My car runs smoothly and has very good fuel consumption, compared too most on site.

However, going to experiment with a tank of 97/98 next fillup.

I "might" try a tank full of higher octane fuel when I next go to the West Country for a break, but for normal everyday use I don't see the point of filling it with super unleaded fuel, it's pretty pointless & a waste.

It is only a waste if the engine is optimised for 95 RON. If it is then there is nothing whatsoever to be achieved using 97 RON or above. The engine cannot take advantage of it.

I've had a look through the manual and it doesn't specifically state which type of fuel (95 or 97> RON) to use, so AFAIC it uses the cheaper 95 RON as standard & there's no need to use the 97> RON fuel.

I'm nearly positive the manual mentions 97ron and also if a lower grade is used performance may be affected .... And for those thinking of making the change from one to the other give it a couple of tank fulls to make the difference.

From page 192 owners manual

On vehicles using prescribed unleaded petrol of min. 95 RON, the use of petrol with a higher octane number than 95 RON can increase the power and reduce fuel consumption.

Prescribed fuel – unleaded petrol 98/(95) RON

Use unleaded fuel with the octane rating 98 RON. Unleaded petrol 95 RON can also be used but results in a slight loss in performance.

So, this might be a silly question, what RON is the normal Petrol in the UK, like Sainsburys, Shell, Tesco etc? is that 95RON? and the premium ones are 97? or 98?

Probably why my fuel consumption appeas to be better than most!

"Normal" petrol is 95 RON. Premium brand fuels and some supermarket fuels (certainly BP, Esso, Shell, Tesco) mostly offer 95 RON and 97 (or higher). Some budget brands such as Murco only offer 95 RON as far as I am aware. Not sure whether or not Sainsburys or Morrisons offer both.

I have always used Shell normal unleaded in all my cars. Have heard of bad things with cheapo petrol.
