Yesterday night decided to do a walk round the Yeti and check the lights. On Auto and headlight settings the nearside foglight unit came with the headlights on but not the off-side one but both were on for the two fog-light settings (switched pulled out once and then again). 

 

Same thing this morning before I drove the car. In daylight I was able to confirm it was the bottom bulb in the fog lamp unit that wasn't working on the auto and headlight settings. Just come home expecting to replace the bulb and now neither side lights up until the switch is pulled out, when both light, which is what I would expect to happen.

 

No error messages are showing on the dashboard for faults. 

 

Has anyone else experienced this or any idea what might be the cause? The car's an 8 months old Elegance so still plenty of warranty left if it needs to go in (but dreading that it will be an intermittent electrical fault!). My first thought was a poor connection on the offside bulb or its connector but now thinking it might be a problem with the bulb that came on, the nearside one. Don't think it can be anything to do with the cornering function as I park about 60-70 feet down a straight drive.

 

 

 

Yup, your missing something, you should have read the manual. What you are seeing is the cornering fog light system in action.

With headlights on, when the steering wheel is turned the fog light in the direction being turned illuminates, also comes on when indicating below around 30 mph, oh and when reverse is selected both fog lights come on. All of which are very handy if you drive or park in unlit areas, some city folks cant see the point of them.

Sounds like the cornering fogs to me. Left or right ones come on singularly as you turn the wheel in either direction, go off when the wheels are straight and both come on when reverse selected. This happens when selected via the MFD and is perfectly normal. If you do not like this facility it can be switched off

You need VCDS to turn off this function, it can't be turned off via the MFD.

Thank you for these replies. I had read about the cornering fog light function but discounted this because I drive pretty much in a straight line down the drive. Perhaps it is much more sensitive than than I realised and is responding to small adjustments to the steering wheel as I go under the car port. I'll have to be a bit more observant over the next few days. Anyway, you've put my mind at rest for the moment. Love the Yeti but having trouble accepting the car is smarter than I am!

If both fog lights come on when you select reverse or just put them on using the switch, you haven't got a bulb problem. And yes, the cornering function is quite sensitive to steering wheel movements.

Yes Kenny you are correct, I was meaning to say VCDS for this, it's the DRL's that can be turned off via the MFD, thank you for pointing out.

 

The following is the extract from the manual for cornering fog lights:

The fog lights with the function CORNER are adjusted according to the steering angle or after switching on the turn signal light 1) in the following circumstances:

› the vehicle is stationary and the engine is running or it moves with a speed of

maximum 40 km/h;

› the daylight driving lights are not switched on;

› the low beam is switched on or the light switch is in the position  and the  intensity of the ambient light causes the low beam to be switched on;

› the fog lights are not switched on;

› no reverse gear is engaged.

Note

If the reverse gear is engaged during the active function CORNER, both fog lights illuminate. ?

Even better after fitting Osram Nightbreaker +90% bulbs to them. You'll need to get used to folk telling you that you've got a bulb out from time to time though!
