Choosing a PDA

Featured Replies

Any recomendations on which PDA to buy for work. It needs to hold my contacts, calendar and todo list. It also needs to sync seemlessly with outlook and be easy to enter data into. Might use it eventually for SATNAV so needs good colour display. A half decent battery life wouldn't go amiss either.

I'm staying away from anything by Palm because my M505 which I used to love has gone bellyup twice on me and seems to be having severe problems with data entry. I've tried repairing it to no avail.

What about combining my mobile with a PDA by getting a smart phone. Any recommendations? The Blackberry 7100 gets very mixed reports.

I have an Orange SPV500 and recently got the Blackberry 7100 and must admit that up till now I prefer the Smartphone. Its more compact maybe not as easy to input data etc. but does everything the Blackberry does and a little more. E.g MP3's, Photos, Videos and Media Player.

I'm stuck with vodafone though as my mobile is provided by my work. Sorry, forgot to mention that. Thanks for the feedback though.

Thats the reason I got the Blackberry cos it was the only thing of that type that Vodafone could offer. I've got accounts with both Orange and Vodafone and wanted a "smartphone" I could use on Vodafone for Syncing with Outlook. But as you are aware its not without its problems.

Dell Axim X50v and a TomTom 5 Sat Nav System.

XDA IIs

Best ever imo.

Unfortunately youve just missed a great deal on the X50v...

just got the orange spv2000 for

The Dell is really nice........

What about the HP Ipaq RX4700?

640 x 480 colour screen (double the resolution of most PDA's)

Wifi, Bluetooth, dual expansion slots, fast processor.....

I've got one.........might be for sale..... ;)

If you want to combine it with a phone without compromising the PDA's functions, then I suggest you look at the Ipaq 6340. Got bluetooth, Wifi and full GSM/GPRS. Works on windows pocket PC and full sync of calender, contacts, tasks, inbox etc from Outlook (get a free copy of Outlook 2002)automatically every time you dock. You also get pocket excel, word etc with it.

You can enter data using handwriting recognition, or on screen qwerty keyboard or a small detachable keyboard (included) that is designed for use with both thumbs - it is great for those demon texters out there. You can also make a mobile call to anybody in your contact list with just a couple of pushes of the button.

You can pick these up for about

I'll have to look into the Ipaq 6340. Sounds just the ticket. Cheers

BTW one more thing you may need to know. I have been told (not sure it is correct but worth checking) that the Palm OS system cannot multitask with 2 bluetooth connections (like an American president - can't walk and chew gum at the same time). So if you are in the car you can have a bluetooth connection to your handsfree kit or you can have a bluetooth connection to your Sat Nav receiver but you can't have both at the same time. Anybody know if that is true? I know the Ipaq and Pocket PC can do both at the same time cos mine does.

Just be aware that the ipaq 6340 is a couple of years old now, so its quite bulky and slow compared to modern PDAs.

I've noticed that after browsing Ebay. They are also still bloody expensive. I'll hold out for a bargain. I was considering getting a Parrot CK3300 too and I like the idea that the ipaq 6340 is compatible for Satnav

It's true. So, you can't use Tom Tom plus on the Palm with a Bluetooth GPS receiver.

It's still the subject of correspondence between myself and Tom Tom!

Any incarnation is unlockable, so you can stick any SIM card in it, and should cost

But then maybe thats why it actually works whereas the newer models don't. :):)

I agree it is a bit bulkier than some of the other Ipaqs (but not by much) but that may be because it has the mobile phone kit inbuilt.

There is a new Ipaq out (the 6500 series) that is about the same size but it is lighter. That not only has a phone it also has an inbuilt GPS receiver, but it loses the Wifi. It has a thumb keyboard on the front so its screen is smaller (one of the reasons I chose the Ipaq over other smart phones was the size of the screen - especially if you are going to use it for sat nav). The other problem with it I suspect may be siting it far enough forward in the car so that it can "see" enough satelites through the windscreen and still be reachable.

However the real drawback is that if you think the 6340 is expensive you should see the price of the 6500!

I have the Dell X50 with Navman software and it's really good, the Ipaq 6340 is quite bulky in comparison and heavy as well. Some friends of mine have the 6340 and the sound quality is not as good as a normal mobile phone, sort of dalek like sometimes

I use the Dell X30 with Tom Tom and have no problems whatsoever, the whole kit cost me around
