The dreaded leaking seal in rear door carriers

Featured Replies

Christ almighty.

55 plate Fabia bought late last year from skoda dealer has this problem.  They’ve had a first attempt at removing and resealing the door carriers.

(I know I know there lots of info on here about the DIY fix ... I agreed a price of £96 for both doors with them, so I couldn’t be bothered )

Done on Saturday 11 Jan.  Been raining on and off since then.

Unfortunately, on checking this morning, the underside of the drivers side door carrier is wet, and there’s water on the seal .

Passenger side door carrier is dry, but there’s water on the seal.

Has anyone else had experience of asking a dealer to fix this well known fault, what was the outcomes, problems, did you get it fixed in the end?  (Or had to get another garage to do it / ended up doing it yourself).

I wonder – is it possible they didn’t dry out the internals of the door (there is some foam in there?) and this is the residual water from inside?

How hard can it bloody be?

Thanks

I got the dealership to fix mine on warranty, it worked for about 3 months until first heavy rain, now it does it whenever it rains.

Im afraid i think its one of those if you want it doing properly, do it yourself jobs.

£96 !!!

Sod that, £5 tube of silicone and DIY so you know it's done rite, it's easy enough

Exactly the same boat as you teutonic :(

Thinking of doing myself now...

Same here, I got the dealers to do it, lasted about a week and I was so cheesed off when I removed the door card to find their black silicone peeling away!

I wanted to take it back to dealers and ask them to show me which clown supposedly sealed up the door carriers but ended up sealing it myself using the infamous Plumbers Gold - all good 3+ years on.

You have every right to take it back and rightly so, their workmanship has been poor and as you said it probably didn't dry it out properly 1st and that's why the silicone didn't work (that's my theory anyways).

so these have the regulator panels like most new vags?

if so is It a case of taking trim off looseing off internal panel, cleaning it up and re sealing?

Took me an hour to do all four doors and that was stopping to admire my work half way through with a cuppa.

Apparently they use a 'special' skoda sealant (that you can order from skoda parts) that's so special it's £30 a bottle.  (!)

The cynic in me says they use any old **** from B&Q.

That plumbers gold stuff gets rave reviews ... i bet its nowhere near as good as that.

My rash prediction is they haven't used enough / in the right places / far enough 'up' the door carrier ... and/or they don't really know what they're doing.

judgemental i know, but the two guys in the workshop looked awfully young and awfully not on the ball.

I wonder if I'll end up taking it to my local backstreet i've been going to for years.

UPDATE:  surprisingly, without a fight, they have agreed to have another go, and pick up / drop off the car (i bought the car from a dealer 35 miles from my house)

Hmm.

I'll give em one more chance ...

I think I might use some tiger seal on mine. that's usually permanent. and can be cut off if needed.

My doors were leaking on my Fabia when I Baught it so stripped them down to do the leaky door fix . And found it had already been done but with some horrible black putty like stuff that had just cracked with the flex of the car ( maybe dealer job) . When I sealed them back up I used sticker flex and it worked just fine no leaking for 3/4 months now :)

I probably wouldn't expect a dealership or any other garage to do a great job on this fix.

Reason being that it takes some time to do it really thoroughly; and really thoroughly is definitely how you want it done if it is going to last.

DIY and taking your time is the way I'd recommend.  Do seal most of the way up the rear edge of the rear carriers, as there's definitely a path for water to get onto the carrier near that edge via the plastic bracket behind the 3 black plastic rivets, that connects the lock to the carrier during assembly.
