Howdy people

Just been to view the car from a local dealer type bloke and its a black VRS. A few more details

Black

81k on the clock

Cam and waterpump done at 65k

Interior is immaculate

Drives very well

Steering nice and tight etc.

6 months warranty

Service before I pick it up

Now the bodywork is the only thing putting me off :( He did say if I wanted it I could say "I want that fixing and that touching up etc." but whether that means no budge on the price or not I don't know

Bad things:

Front bumper has a bit of a bump sticking out of it like something has pushed out from behind it - from a small impact perhaps?

One door has a bit of a "key squiggle" the size of a one pence piece.

Edge of boot lid has a bit of rust bubble coming

Rear bumper has a nice big crack and some paint flakes coming off

Wing mirror has been cracked in centre

Now he did say he could definitely get the rear bumper and wing mirror sorted. All things considered I am in a dilemma - i can see why you love the fabia, its a great nippy little car!

Its a family owned business and hes a nice guy, whatchu think? Gonna visit it during the daytime on saturday

I got one for less with leather, sat nav, cruise control, remap, oem xenons, allard egr delete, PD160 intake, cd changer, cupra splitter, and in excellent condition.  Granted that was a lucky  enough find.

Might be worth keeping an eye out for what else is about.

True, I know for a standard car thats a lot, its just realistically the best condition (if any VRS) right on my doorstep, low mileage and with warranty blah blah blah :p

All things considered, and I said I'd like all that bodywork done, am I likely to get it for like £3.8k and would that be an alright price? Random price but I can't see him dropping much

Obviously you don't settle on the first price they put on the car - what should my goal price be all things considered

There's plenty down your part of the world mate.  I even went to near birmingham to pick that one up.  There were more in that area including one in the same dealers.

There's an SE in london for 4K in the for sale section on here.

The car is overpriced given the description.

Be prepared to travel, even within a few hours of where you are and you'll get a decent car for the same money. Don't buy a car just because its local, buy on condition and history.

History seems good. Interior and engine seem good.

Lets say I get him to sort all the exterior stuff which is annoying me. Baring in mind all standard and a decent service history and it comes with warranty and his own overheads (and a service) it is then worth paying up to £3.6k (offer £3.5k first?) I'm never good at this kind of thing but if I can go with a reasonable price and the car is coming to me with all the bodywork stuff sorted

Or should it be more around the £3k mark

I think it sounds like you really like the car, and you have your mind set I think we have all been there.

you might struggle to get him down, original vrs bumpers arent that cheap even from scrappy you are looking at £100-£200 for one in good nick.

The wing mirror about £30.

Then for proper repair it will need spraying to blend, if they have spray facility you could maybe say around £400 and that be cheap.

So he is already looking at around £800.

Sounds crap to me ( well cosmetically).

When I'd wondering if our cars are worth much more than £3k on 2006 / 110K mile (difference of 30K miles is bugger all by the way)

I had a few minor cosmetic issues with my car but compared to that it must be a "minter" !

Hes got you hook line and sinker, nice little fishy. Walk away there are plenty more cars. Offer him £3800 or you walk - then actually do it. Whats the warranty ?

If I was realistically selling (which I don't as it would be daft, the cars been a from new perfect workhourse for me and still going), I'd actually contemplate something over £3k private for my 2006 with 110K on the clock (well I would if I had a car to replace it with)

For £4.5K I'd say that was main dealer pricing but actual registration doesn't seem to be confirmed unless I've missed something. How you can possibly value without a registration date.

And if you do go for it and they include a service

Make sure they put the correct oil into it (VAG rated 505.01 minimum) most independant garages wont have a clue and just whack in whatever barrell of oil they have lying around

When you have actually worked out the actual reg date is clarified it may be worth running it past wisebuyers for a rough guidance on price. Although maybe less accurate that other blue books etc.

duh! It was a 2005 plate.

I agree in times like these its good to slow down and take a good hard think about it - i wouldn't want to buy something that would just start annoying me everytime I see a little crack here or there.

He has an agreement with a body repairs specialist just out of town who is very good and affordable. Who incidentally is doing me a quote for insurance damage repair to my aging golf mk4.

I'd be happy to offer what I and others have said on here to be a reasonable price all sides considered and then walk away if we can't agree. He seemed keen to sell it as I think the older people he caters for may not be that interested - maybe hes just put that stonking price on there to see if my Daddy is rich enough to just fork out for it.

I personally would like to be as close to 3k as possible to leave budget for a few mods.

But yeh thanks for talking no nonsense to me, it does help bring things into perspective.

Based on this, if he can get the exterior mint for me I'd probably be happy to pay £3k, and probably just do the service meself

Cars similar miles and age are going for £3.5k on ebay but without the exterior damage. Suppose it would be ok to ask this of him with the repairs all in place

Don't be too surprised he is GOING to tell you no. Be prepared for that and walking away, its just one of many, many cars.

According to wisebuyers that may be about bang on BUT should be perfect. Yours isn't. If he can get every point fixed then maybe it might be closer to being worth it. Just not worth the hassle to be honest. Walk away.

I know the feeling when you see a car you love sometimes logic goes out of the window. Been there and done that myself in the past. Sure most of us have!

Always haggle, dealers make a fortune from inflated prices and you can bet he didn’t pay anywhere near his asking price for the car. Buy cheap and sell dear = more profit for him.

If he gets ALL the cosmetic defects sorted out and is willing to do a deal on price then it could be a good buy. I note you say it drives well... I drove a few before buying mine and the difference between a good one and a bad one is night and day. But if you only drive one you’ll not know. Need to drive a few different ones to get a feel for them I found.

Went and saw him again as he delivered the service history to me to study over the weekend :) nice of him

Anyway, its had two cambelts in its history, last one being done 5k ago. Now on 81k

Told him all the points i'd want sorted bodywise and to be fair I think I was overly harsh first time round it didn't seem too shabby. He said he could get them all sorted at a well known local bodyshop

Onto money, nice guy but so far I got him down to £4150. He will repair bodywork, service it (whatever needs doing including brakes if needed) to set me up with the 6 months all parts and labour warranty. I then get 6 months limited warranty to cover any bigger failings like turbo, AC compressor etc.

I then got him to throw in a free of charge service when needed next and thats down on the quote now. I was thinking I can easily get a free tank of diesel thrown in too as he owns the pumps there.

So in my second looking it didn't look as bad and I think I could polish and wax the car and it would look totally different. What else could I ask out of him I wonder - still a bit more than private sales but if the bodywork is sorted - the interior is pristine and the engine has been well serviced and drives well and I have 6 months to break it.

Again I sound suckered in but with that description what would you value at
