Police roadside check - what a joke

Featured Replies

Not all Police are heavy-handed/bullies etc.

Was heading up the A23 over the weekend when I spotted a dark blue VW Golf R. There was just 'something about it' that made me hold-off on the usual blast and as it overtook the passenger policeman actually looked over and politely nodded! After that it disappeared very rapidly, probably to catch a Nova (get a) Life trying to attain escape velocity.

  • They've got time for this, yet every 5th car on the road (its not far off) has at least one bulb out...

DRLs help quite a bit drawing attention to a car's presence. Pedestrians and other drivers are more likely to notice you especially in the mornings when many are still half asleep.

As for the DRLs on the vRS I think it was a lazy decision guided by a cost cutting design. Rather than making a new more DRL like module they just crammed four bright leds in the fog light shroud. Meh!

vRS DRL's are ridiculous how bright they are.

They bug me and look like Fog Lights and yet i know what they are.

Someone with a vRS following them with its DRL's on, can be excused for thinking they are Fogs on i think.

I wish vRS drivers would put on sidelight & dipped beam if it is anything other than bright daylight.  In drizzle they are a PITA to other drivers,

Even In normal daylight, just running with  the Sidelights on are as bright as many other cars DRL's

These are Standard Sidelights, not even on as the DRL's

& Sidelight and Dipped Beam.

& in the Dark with Half of the Sidelight/DRL unit taped over so to annoy less drivers in the rain.

Sorry disagree with you here.  DRL's have to be bright. Hence the name Daytime Running Lights.  If you want us to put side lights on, then it dips the DRL's, they are, our sidelights.  I for one however do put sidelights on when a bit of drizzle starts so agree with you on that point.  Also that's one thing that I'll NEVER be doing is to tape half of the light over just to please other people. (Not aiming that directly at you).

Also a further point, surley the police office in question should be able to tell the difference between DRLs and Foglighhts?  Aren't all DRLs' white leds, and fogs are yellow?

Re-read your post, I've quoted it exactly as you posted

I can't mind read if you've missed out part of the responses

Clearly not read it all... So here are the relevant parts

Do you know why I've pulled you up?

No

You are driving with fog lights on!

No I'm not

Yes you are

No I'm not

I'm telling you you are!

At this point I jump out the car and tel him to show me the switch that turns them off...

Now which bit didn't you read?

I just wonder, as there was another officer present who seemed more senior, could this be a proby on traffic attachment? As with all these types of training the senior officer stepped in when things were getting silly, and the "bad cop" will have his attitude problem duly noted.....

Just thinking aloud here.

By the way isn't there a switch behind the fuse cover that turns them off? Imagine if the officer knew that.  :giggle:

I dont think the officer has the right to turn off drl's though. They are serving their designed purpose by being on. Even if theyre in a bad place.

Also. Driving on sidelights is pointless. Your car will be seen well before a poxy 5 watt bulb.

If its dull, ill turn my headlights on, but its either that or nothing. Sidelights are for parking. Pointless driving on them

True dat.

Otaylor 38,

have you seen how bright the Standard vRS sidelights are, even on a day with quite good sunshine?

The vRS, has a 'Parking Light',  you put down the indicator stalk when you leave the car, one sidelight shows front and back.

'Sidelights are not Parking Lights.'  One on might be.

george

vRS Sidelights. no DRL on.

& Sidelight half masked over.

Aren't all DRLs' white leds, and fogs are yellow?

Nope, my fog lights are white.

Haven't seen yellow fog lights for years although I believe that it is legal to use them.  Even the French seem to have given up on yellow lights.

personally, I never confuse fog position DRLs with fogs, I can recognise the skoda, VW (just bulbs sometimes , not LEDs) , hyundia and volvo's easily, DRL's have a benign beam, just to make the car visible, fogs are spread out to the floor and the sides, (hence giving the reflection that sometimes makes them so bright as to be distracting) and i've never seen any fog lights that are LED's...

me and george have always disagreed on this (and thats fine) , but I lIKE DRLs , I think they are a good idea, and make people easily more visable when 50% of people are too stupid to put dipped beams on when the weather gets bad (I live in the lakes, and its bben raining hard for 2 months now..) and if some of those 50% now have DRL's thats better for all of us, and will reduce some of the accidents I have to go to!

as for the police, I got pulled for going too fast round a roundabout! lol..... needless to say I was on my way once he saw i wasn't a drunken reveler from the festival the other side of the roundabout ;)

edit: I can barely tell they are on George... Rabies gives sensitivity to light you know! ;) *runs

I would go along with the contention that you were being unnecessarily bloody-minded . . . unless of course you didn't actually know that there was no switch to turn off what the Police Officer quite reasonably thought were fog lights.

I suspect that you knew perfectly well what his misunderstanding was due to and a more reasonable person would likely simply have pointed out the situation in a polite manner.

Your mileage may vary ;)

DRL's on cars do not bother me when on as 'Daylight Running Lights', or 'Daytime Running Lights'.

So in good light.

As they were supposed to be fitted, and function,

to make other road users including pedestrians aware a vehicle is around and moving towards them in Daylight/Daytime.

They bug me when the day is not bright, say morning in winter, late afternoon in winter, in drizzle, rain, fog, snow. semi light.

Then they are 2 lights of how ever bright the manufacturer made them, or some plonker maybe made them even brighter

& that these basically might be on because they came on automatically.

Obviously it is time for lighting up, and if no DRL's had come on, the vehicle might have no lights on because the driver does not think,

or look and see everyone else has dipped beam on..

They with their DRL's on still have no rear lights on though and its lighting up time.

ie, the hours between Dusk & Dawn, or poor visibility conditions.

Personally i never have the DRL's on, i drive with the Sidelights & Dipped beam,

& its the vRS Sideligthts i find that annoy other drivers in towns and at junctions as the light goes down late afternoon.

Enough drivers, and often they are van drivers that think they are seeing a D1ck with Driving/Fogs on and flash ,

or extended flash to tell you, you are a D1ck.

As sk4gw already pointed out, different on a VRS.

The biggest confusion is having DRL's located where the Fogs are normally located & them being on, I see lots of cars in Kent that do drive using fogs as DLR's which is very annoying,  the big giveaway is the age of the car clearly never had them fitted in the 1st place.

Lack of consistancy in location & how there are configured does not help - Skoda themsleves are a big culpirt, as they put LED strips in the vRS FL , and subsequently they used the foglight location for the Fabia vRS, most of the other manufacturers have been consistant with the LED strips across the range.

This does prove the police are doing something about drivers who use fogs when theres no need though.

Which i very much agree with

You say you pointed out his mistake, when, to quote your post, all you answered was "No", and then "At this point I jump out the car and tel him to show me the switch that turns them off...", so again, hardly 'pointing his mistake out to him'

Keep us posted on the next time you get stopped

Can anyone spot the difference, boys and girls?

:wall:

Nah. More interested in the topic in hand than playing spot the difference mate haha.

I don't understand why people have such a problem with being pulled over by the Police. Is it really that much of a hardship that someone is just doing their job?

I once got pulled over and the reason the officer stated was, "There's 3 of you in the car and it's late at night". Some might say that's pretty petty and it might be a slow night for the copper, but did I fly off the handle? No, I answered all the copper's questions politely and we then ended up chatting about the finer points of the road rally I was on my way home from, even resulting in my Navigator teaching the officer about some of the cryptic navigation we had to figure out on said rally. :D

So seriously, just get over it.

I was on my way home last night, from a friend's house.  I was doing the speed limit (40mph), and a car came racing up behind me could barely see his lights, so I braked test him only to find out it was the Police. :giggle:  He continued to follow me for .5 miles then turned off.  If he had pulled me over I would've had some stern words from myself,  As 1. he raced up behind me, 2. headlight out.

A massive ego seems standard for SOME of these officers which can really get peoples backs up. Just because they are law enforcement it doesn't mean you have to shy away and aren't entitled to a point of view and to point something out when they are clearly wrong.

I lost all respect when my car was damaged in a road rage incident and the guilty party walked free from court in front of me due to the police failing to collect vital evidence.
