What speed to you cruise at in 6th to get good mpg?

Featured Replies

I never get good mpg in 6th unless doing something like 85mph

Prefer to keep it in 5th on the motorway and i got 57-59mph on the display, if i do that speed in 6th then it drops to just over 40mpg, even when it's just cruising along on a completely flat smooth road

Don't know how some people go as low as 50mph in 6th lol

I get 55-60 mpg in 6th on the motorway sat at 70-80 mph. No idea why you'd need to sit at 50-60 mph in a 6 speed diesel.

Each unto their own though.

Mainly when going through 60 limit road works for about 12 miles

In those circumstances then I guess your right.

I would keep it in 6th just because the revs will be lower thus putting less stress on the turbo, keeping the revs between 1.5k-2k.

60mph in 6th is a struggle as you are actually working the car harder and it feels like its chugging along under strain!

Mayb some of you's have the fjw gearbox. It has long ratios. Think it was in early fabias

Mins got the long box and i can't even entertain using 6th unless I'm 70+.  it really chugs anything below that.

70mph is about 1700rmp in mine.

I have the shorter box so 70 is about 2200 for me :(

A bit of a strange one, as your choice of gear should reflect the road speed, engine load, road and traffic conditions etc.

I agree with comments posted already but would add; don't drive around in 5th / 6th at 1000rom or just over as it will fubar the DMF (obvious really)

Same as Nathan I've got the short box. 6th at 70-80 results in 50+mpg nicely. When cruising I aim to keep it between 1500-2000 rpm

Many variables involved, however, cruising at 65mph in 6th - albeit on a straight road is ideal.

I have the longer ratio box in my 04 and to get max MPG (on the onboard display) I sit in 5th with speed at 55-60. I've seen up to 73 MPG on a 55mile run doing this.

I've played with 6th to get something similar and I just cant, 68ish seems to be the best I can get  in 6th and I cant get it over 60MPG on the same run.

So 5th for an eco-run for me works best.

Normally dont go into 6th until 64mph ish +.

Dont normally run the car under 2k rpm once at a constant speed.  All to do with the DMF ive read about.

yea i agree, i rarely use 6th unless on motorways or duel carriageways, cruising 70 or above, 50 to 60 may as well stay i 5th, in 30's no point leaving 3ed, 4th for the 40's, n i can easily get over 50 average usage if i really want to, and believe me i am the kind of guy to treat every given change setting off at traffic lights as a race, and i still get 45 to 48 on average after every full tank of diesel.

My old Fabia vRS seemed to get better MPG at 80 than 70 for some reason (indicated speeds), so that was my cruising speed. Used 6th from 60 upwards, apart from if I was coasting down hills.

In mine, best MPG is from 1500rpm to just below say 1900-2000 RPM. Not really possible to do that a) on the motorway and B) constantly in 6th. Unless it's a busy but not knackered M25, in which case 40mph might be the limit (I'd be in 5th or 4th there though).

On the motorway, I typically set the CC to around 65 indicated. If I catch a truck, I speed up, overtake, then settle back into CC mode.

Mine is best at bang on 70mph, sometimes a little less.  This is only about 1800 revs in mine though, 1700 if doing around 65mph.  This is only effective on the flat and downhill though - On any sort of incline the engine labours at this level of revs (very little boost) and I use 5th gear for a bit more pull.

I have seen the car telling me over 70mpg on a really long run before.  I know its not doing that, but its good to see :D

If I am driving for economy, I spend all of my time between 1500 and 1700 rpm, changing gear to maintain this. On my daily commute to work (18 miles) I can get 62-65 mpg (indicated, during summer) and high 50's usually around 55-58 during winter, my best was 73 mpg in perfect conditions (once) lol.

I know the on board computer isn't the most accurate thing but, it gives you goals to strive for, and you are maintaining traffic speed and flow reasonably easily.

As above it can depend which gearbox you have.

The early ones were really long. Our Cordoba PD130 would be well into triple figures at 3000rpm.

Was great for trips to Germany though where we would still get over 50mpg with driving at over 100mph.

6th was not possible until at least 65mph on the flat and a steady 70mph cruise in 6th would get around 60-61mpg.

I just go with whatever feels naturally right for the engine. Never think about gears or speeds

although I need my speeds bringing dowb :(

Since ive done cambelt my average mpg is not 52-56 mpg. Used too be mid 40's

edit: if im going up steep hills (im in wales so allot of them) ill rev the car allot higher before changing to land straight on fullpower in the next ggear. Simple really but ita soooo surprising how many people dont relise this lol

what's sixth :(

Now things make a bit more sense I must have the shorter gearbox. On the way home today I was sat at 70mph, the rev counter was sat at 2200 in 6th. As a couple of other people have said mine seems to be better on fuel, the closer to 80 I cruise at.

Now I'm curious, anybody know why the changed the ratio's? So can I assume that the shorter boxes will be slightly quicker to 60 but top out quicker, whilst the long boxes are vice-versa?

Also my car has not been re-mapped that is gonna make a difference compared to re-mapped cars I would of thought.

Another dimension.

Emissions I think. They changed at the same time as the BLT came in.

Well... put it this way. My car was standard with a book top speed of 128mph but I had 138mph (gps) out of it once.

I didn't run out of revs but ran our of power to overcome the wind speed etc. and rev any more.

...about an extra 25 kilos, I think. :)
