Engine options - 60ps vs. 75ps?

Featured Replies

Good afternoon,

I'll shortly be ordering my Citigo, and am considering various options. The most difficult of which is the engine choice. I'm looking to buy a 60ps Greentech Elegance, but I have a little niggling in my head that I should opt for the 75ps engine.

In regards to real world performance, is there any great difference?

I'm led to understand that the 75ps version only offers a benefit if you drive the thing to the ragged edge. I'm by no means a slow driver, but equally I never redline the engine. I've heard people say that the 75ps version gives you better pull up the hills, but as far as I can see torque figures are identical until again you exceed about 4000rpm.

I'd be grateful if owners of both engine types could give me their opinion.

Many thanks.

Not really

Only high up in the revs like you said

You'll be fine with either engine fella

I did a lot of research on this before deciding that there really would be no difference in the two for everyday driving. I'm more than happy with with my 60ps Elegance.

I deliberated on which engine to get on my Elegance when ordering, in the end because I would be making a few long journeys in it I opted for the 75ps. I don't think you would know much difference in day to day around town driving to be honest.

the only thing i noticed was the 75PS was a little quieter / smoother sounding, i ordered a 60PS SE Greentech as most of my driving will be in town.

60 is a great little engine all round. :)

We've got a 75 and I've driven 60s a fair bit: in my opinion there is very little in it.

The torque curves of the two engines are pretty much identical up to about 4200 rpm. The 75 PS versions have slightly lower overall gearing, so will accelerate slightly better, but use a bit more fuel in the process.

Having driven both, I went for the 60 PS, as there was very little difference under normal driving conditions. It's even quite good on the motorway. At 70 mph in fifth gear you are at the bottom end of the maximum torque plateau, so there is still some acceleration to be had. The engine and gearing are really quite well matched. Much better than the petrol-engined Smart Fortwo I had before, which was hopeless in that respect.

60ps for me too, really cannot tell the difference in normal driving between the two.  My aunts 75 feels a little more revy but thats about it.

If it was me I'd go for the 60ps and save both a bit of fuel and money.

Isn't the 75 a different tax band too?

I thought that all of the 75 models are Greentech so are VED band A

The 60 engine can be had with or without Greentech

Yes, all the Greentech models are £0 VED.

Non greentechs are a full £20 per year!

It all adds up, Damo.

We went for the 75ps as its impossible to use what you don't have. Occasionally I drive the Citigo with some enthusiasm (still legal). Clearing out the cobwebs whilst in the upper rev range. For the little extra cost I feel the 75 is best.

The 60 probably works so hard it never gets any cobwebs... ;)

And we went for the 60 on the premise that 'less is more' :)

Very little difference between the two, unless you rag them.

I am confused by the lack of a diesel version, they could have fitted the 3 cylinder VW diesel

maybe comming soon ?

Interesting post, I have a Sport so of course stuck with 60ps but I tried a number of Citigo's and agree that you really have to give it full beans to tell the difference but even then it is so marginal I think you'd have to race your mate next to you in the 75ps version to really see any difference.

Then I'd just get my 1.8TSi Oct'y out and be done with it :giggle:

Both are great.

Be interesting to drive an E Up! though and see how that went.

Agreed - no difference until over 4000rpm.  The ASG sometimes likes going over 4000rpm (quick getaways), so handy to have the 75PS there but in normal, sedate, driving there really is no difference.
