haggling with main dealer

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Hopes you can help.

In the process of buying new octavia vRS estate around £ 26000. The new car will not be ready before MOT on my current car expires, so far here is what the main skoda dealer offers to me:

1> they can lend me a car regardless millage until my new car arrives

2> full tank fuel about £75

3> one off car care plan worth of £ 300

Just want to check with you guys, is there no further haggling room for it ? like dropping prices , free extras etc, based on your experience ?

I do like the car and do not want to feel to be ripped off either.

By the way, they have confirmed this offer is as far as they prepare to go for.

Shall I just seal the deal ,  keep haggling, or walk off ?

Any opinion will be appreciated.

Regards

I see 3 good reasons to stay with them - most of us waiting 4+ months didn't get anything as compensation...

You should definitely push for a discount off list price.

If you want some ammunition to take to your dealer go online and get quotes from online brokers like carwow and drivethedeal and see if they will match it.

I ordered a 2.0TDI SE estate back in October and got 6% discount on the 0% PCP deal. Initially my dealer was not willing to offer any discount but that all changed when i showed them the online quotes. You should still be able to achieve discounts in that ball park.

If you don't ask you don't get as they say

Good luck!

I got 8.65% or£1,730 off a 1.4 TSI Elegance by price matching a carwow quote however, an unlimited loaner car when ordering a VRS is quite a big thing, some on here are upto 7 months waiting for their VRS's, food for thought cause money ain't everything.

I'd agree, if the loan car is any good and important to you then take it. If the bottom line matters more, go elsewhere.

I was surprised by the cost reduction that you can get..  If someone who is/has served in the Forces can get this level of discount.. I don't see why you can't haggle to somewhere close! It just shows you how much is added on top of the price for a car!

So any current or ex serving members of the Armed Forces..check the above site if you're looking for a new motor !!

yeah, I am just abit hesitating at the loaner car eqeals to money off list price

seeing others getting 8 -10% off price leads me to think that I should try the same even with the loan car

maybe I am just too greedy :p

Is there not a chance of your current car passing its mot???

If there isn't then am guessing you don't have as much room to haggle as i doubt you would get same from another dealer if as above you could be waiting 4+ months for your new car

hmm, chance of passing MOT this time is possible, but I feel it will be painful moneywise , since it cost me around 500 quid for the last MOT, I would expect its gonna be more than that

Still cost way more than us lucky forces people pay for instance my mk3 vrs combi had a on the road price of nearly 27k (Uk). I paid the princely sum of £16,495. Obviously that is VAT free and a bit of forces discounting, but we have to export them ( Germany).

Some of the main stream makes your Fords Vauxhalls are ridiculously cheap - half price!! But urgh no thanks

Thats true Matty70... but for me thats still a big discount for just having been a member...  A long time ago I bought a £16k Mitsubishi from Cyprus..cost me £6400 + £400 to stuff it in a container. Had it waiting for me at Brize when I arrived back. Strange how the Fords and Vauxhalls are so cheap..they were hardly discounted when I was buying!

Get a quote from carwow and try a few dealers. Don't mention about your MoT but get them to commit to a delivery date in writing on your order form so it forms part of the contract.

Sent from my phone so please excuse brevity and spelling

DDS cars is a good discount, negotiated with the car manufacturers because there is a large volume of sales I presume. Dds is run by griffin, if you are abroad you get the tax off as well, so knock another 20% off.  I'm in london.... but the basic discount of 22% couldn't be matched by any normal skoda dealer.

Unless the loaner is a massive value - walk away.

1. Try online places like DriveTheDeal and Carwow - This will give you a discount level to aim for (or at least get near)

2. If you have your spec / colour nailed down - go to at *least* 3 dealers for quotes. Go in if possible so they know you are serious.

3. Make the deilvery date part of your contract.

Personally, I would consider the MOT a non-issue. Getting hit with a £300 bill for an MOT is better than a £300 service plan thrown in, simply because a car with a fresh MOT is worth at least £300 as a banger and can be sold on to recoup costs.

I would be aiming for 3yrs servicing thrown in, free GAP insurance (or at peanuts cost), and a discount of around 8% (dont state this.... just keep playing dealers against each other at give them a date you intend to order, so they know you are serious)
