Drivers wiper adjustment

Featured Replies

Got some Bosch aero wipers but they keep catching the drivers pillar, had an attempt at adjusting them with not much luck.

Any idea how to get these off without brute force ?

That looks well rusty for a wiper spindle, so proceed at your own risk.

Stand the arm up like you were changing the blade and then rock it gently at right angles to the hinge. The taper spline should break free.

Wd40 and leave to soak. Then a shap blow with a hammer usually does the trick

WD40,  soak for ages,  keep resoaking.  maybe over night, or a few days,  keep spraying.

or go on ebay a buy a 'windscreen wiper puller'    - about £5-8 for a decent-ish one that'll do the job.   essentially a 3legged corkscrew type device which grabs the arm and presses down on the spindle to seperate the arm off the car

i had the same with a bosch wiper but adjusting the arm on the spindle didnt work so i put it back to the original position on the spindle and then trimmed the plastic end of the wiper so it didnt catch

Best way to not break anything is to invest in a cheapo wiper puller. Fiver off Amazon for me, and it'll be used if needed on any other cars I own in the future.

I'm very OCD, so I will want my wipers to line up.

Had the same problem and ended up cutting a bit of the plastic end trim on the wiper.

That is the answer, as well as soaking in WD-40 and afterwards clean the splines up with a wire brush and apply some grease - then only nip the nut up enough to hold to arm tight as there is the chance you might just "go for gold" and really mess things up.

Edit:- of course accepting the first bit of advice about getting a proper one. I'd reckon that it is now too late in that car's life to try the "stand on end and rock it " method.

I know all this because when I bought my wife a Polo new late in 2002, it came with the "old school" rear wiper - had to get rid of that sharpish!  Old wiper arm came off easily using the "stand on end and rock it" method, many years later when I needed to replace the rear wiper spindle/wash tube etc, the arm just would not come off, I needed to but one of these "amazing" pullers via amazon/ebay - they make that job very easy, plus the arm still looks okay and can be reused without always looking like it has been attacked by a gorilla!
