Turbo lag

Featured Replies

Posted not to long ago about there not being much kick with my new fabia vrs but after a bit of playing I really think its just lag when I put put foot down to when it picks up speed and feel the turbo kick in.

Did a search but not much came up there seems a long 1-2 second delay is it my driving or is this a common thing?

What rev range are you talking about. On a standard furby the turbo kicks in at 1900rpm. Remapped about 1600rpm. Anything below this and yes you will have lag.

At 1900rpm if I hit the gas should there be a delay? Will test again but sure that no matter what the revs I get 1-2 second delay

The delay is down to the drive-by-wire throttle I think. Perfectly normal, and perfectly annoying ;)

Thankyou atleast I know :)

I think this is also down to it being a new (tight) engine. When mine was new there was NO power until 1900 and then a big thump. Now the engine has loosened up it will pull from idle and then the power increases as the turbo comes into play.

I found the cupra intake allowed mine to pull from lower revs too.

I asked about this on my other post about driving an 04 that thumped but my new o5 does not thump and was told it should loosen up to get that thump but yours seems the oposite so not sure :/

Feel stupid taking it to the dealer under warrenty (but if I do can it be taken to any or does it have to be the dealer it was brought from) and asking them thank god for these forums is all I can say :)

Indeed it is. You find lots more info about cars on forums like this than some dealers.

I noticed a difference between my Ibiza 110 TDI & the vRS. The Ibiza has a smaller turbo & started to boost up @ 1.5Krpm. The vRS boosts up a little later. Can be annoying at times.

The Ibiza Cupra I test drove before getting the vRS was dreadfull below 2Krpm - Masses of lag.

Cupra intake helps this problem, smoothing out both at low & high revs in that it will pick up earlier and rev higher without sounding sufficated.

I'm hoping the Milltek GB will re-open at some stage, it was put on hold until interest picks up again, but that should help speed up the spooling up of the turbo as well.

I don't find the lag too bad, you kinda need to prepare yourself a little for what you want to do I suppose. Don't think the drive-by-wire adds much to it, although I could be wrong there :)

Try Ford's TDCi engines if you want to know the meaning of lag! Dangerous in my opinion.

I think the Furby's pretty lag free for a diesel - anything below 1400rpm under load and you're labouring anyway, drive properly and it's fine.

My PD150 lag is alot worce than the vrs its the first thing i noticed on the test drive how more responsive the vrs was just off idle

I'd agree with that.

booked into the dealer on Friday they were very good on phone and said bring it in for peace of mind :)

Darren, can you let us know how you go on

I have a similar concern about the thump in the back or rather the lack of it after completing 4,500 miles from new in mine. Can

My TDI 130 Octy has just done 53,000 and gives you a real shove in the posterior after about 1800 PRM even when its fully loaded with tools, IMO one of the best sounding turbos out there but it makes some odd noises if you release the throttle at low revs with the turbo loaded up :P

I must be pretty lucky with mine then as it pulls strongly from 1500rpm all the way up to 4500rpm :D

Update: Well the dealer has said that all seems ok they think its the ecu, they have said they need more data but there is an update due for the ecu in the next few weeks and call them back then.

My PD130 Superb gives a nice 'shove' around 1800rpm now its nicely loosened up.

These engines really dont give their best untill you've done at least 50,000miles, mines now on 74,000 worth of fairly spirited :D motoring and you really notice the difference if you get in anything with lower miles on it, they feel strangled and almost too tight in comparison, I feel sorry for anyone that never puts a high mileage on these engines as you will really never experience them at their best.

Mine also has the pinking (ish) noise just before you come into the 'power band' and also the 'almost sounds a bit like a very quiet dump valve but not' noise when lifting off as the turbo is spooling.

One of my colleages has a jag X-Type 2.2D sport and when my car was new the performance (believe it or not) was pretty much on par but he just had the edge on acceleration, although he could not keep up with me over 110ish (private road obviously ;) ) but now its a different story, I literaly leave him for dust, he's most upset at having paid

Thanks for the update. Does seems strange that in one breath they say its ok and then in the next they feel that an ecu update will help.

Very believable. Not trying to take your glory, because you have the better car mate, but the jag is a rebadged mondeo, and the diesel engine in it comes from the ford transit. Not a good reason to spend

I get to drive a lot of Focus/Golf/Astra and Mondeo/Passat/Vectra class cars as I use hire cars through my job.

The PD130 does usually give a good shove aound 1800-2000pm. I can't agree with all the flack on the TDCi's though, I've always found them very good although the old Focus 1.8's lacked power and torque but the new Focus 2.0TDCi unit is excellent. The 2.2TDCi is a great engine, I had a Mondeo GhiaX 2.2TDCi for a few days and it was a great drive, 155bhp and 400NM, I'd like to try a tuning box or remap on one.

Some of the Vauxhall units are crap though especially the 1.7TD's and the 2.0TD's. The new 1.9 16V's on the other hand are very good especially the 150bhp versions.

Cheers
