Columbus Personal POIs

Featured Replies

Does any one know if you can update Personal POIs from CD.

I have successfully been able to update from SD card in past but have lost card ! and need to update today.

Thanks

(by the way - does any one know what "warning points" are on my description on the left of this post - I have not seen them on any one else ?)

The data can only be imported from SD Card as far as I am aware. I have attached the instructions I had from a while ago.

removed file as will not download correctly once sent.

Wouldn't mind trying this myself (I have loads of fishing sites in GoogleEarth that I wouldn't mind converting and importing) but when I try and open that PDF it tells me it's corrupt and can't be repaired, can you check and re-upload?

I downloaded GPSBabel and POInspector a while ago but didn't have much success with them.

Cheers

Craig

Hi Mannyo,

When I saw the post I thought great I'll download too & had the same problem - would appreciate a copy - PM maybe?

I tried to re-add the file and its still not working. For those who want the file, send me a PM with your email address and I'll send it that way.

PM Sent.

Link below is what I use with great success, your POIs need to be in ASV or CSV format.

Link below is to guide for above German site in English

Just one point to note - at the final stage YOU MUST save the created db3 file to a folder in the ROOT directory of the SD card. The folder must be called PersonalPOI AND the db3 file name must be longer than 9 characters long.

Works all the time for me - only wish now would be to find someway of having an alarm for certain POIs - seem like Columbus does not have this facility at present - unless someone out there knows different ?

I imported my POI file this evening, at least the Columbus said it had imported it successfully but it doesn't show up anywhere in the POI list, am I correct in thinking I may have to delete one of the default POI Categories or something before my Personal POI's will show up or did I just dream that?

Eyghon,

Don't believe all you read, I noticed that when an SD card is inserted after a short while you do get that message - as far as I can tell nothing is actually updated !!

As far as I know no existing System POI categories need to be removed as the system should have space for around another 20 Personal POIs. Each time the Personal POIs are updated the existing Personal POIs seem to be over written.

Its actually a manual process to kick the update into action, here is what I do :

Insert SD card with data file on

Hit SETUP ? NAVIGATION ? MY POI ? IMPORT ? CONTINUE (Only gives this option if over writing existing personal POIs) ? IMPORT DATABASE ? OK

That has now got the POIs into the system, now you have to tell the system to display them, so back in to SETUP

Hit SETUP ? MAP ? SELECT MAP DETAIL  ? PERSONAL POI ? Tick the check boxes to indicate which POIs to Display ? OK

The above works for me, hope for you also

Yeah I did the Import thing but when I go back into the system via any method that would allow me to select a POI I only see the default choices, none of my own show up. I've just re-imported the list from GoogleEarth into POInspector as I was getting some unexplained errors in the previous effort in POInspector "Could not complete the operation due to error 80020101" when clicking on several of the imported POI's, this one seems to be error free so hopefully when I try importing it into the car again tomorrow it will work this time.

Eyghon,

I had missed the point that you use POI inspector - I always use the VW site on the site as mentioned above #7, link below.

http://lkswagen.de/de/navigation/rns-510/poi-listen-sammlung.html

and I have found that Columbus is very fussy about the db3 file name and its location on the SD card (see above #7)

Good luck

Sorted now mate, the re-import seems to have done the trick, I'm guessing the errors that were present in POInspector were the problem, these appear to have been caused by the fact that I had Web Addresses, Phone numbers, addresses stored in the description tab alongside the Fishing Venue name for many venues in GoogleEarth, I thought these would be stripped out when importing into POInspector but looking at the raw .db3 file it seems to have corrupted it, I stripped all that info from GE and it imported fine into POInspector and then into the Columbus.
