cruise control

Featured Replies

hi guys is it right that cruise control use more diesel or petrol

Good question.

For lead footers like me then cruise is a godsend. It will always return better MPG than I can achieve on long journeys.

For those with very sensitive feet, then I've heard that cruise is not quite so efficient. Not really a lot in it though.

As above.

If you are an efficient driver then you can usually get better MPG. Usually becuase it will always maintain the speed up and down hills whereas driving yourself you might not be too bothered about loosing a bit of speed on the hills or coasting more.

My car is a se+ spec, it was odd it got Bluetooth, MIDI, mfsw, maxidot sat nav etc but no cruise.

Had it retro fitted and love it. Stops the little demon on my shoulder making me hit loud pedal so much on a run!

It's also invaluable in Northamptonshire, land of the mobile speed camera, bang CC on in a 30,40,50 limit then nail it on the open road!

I get better economy with my right foot than cruise control.

I'm also of the view that driving without cruise control is safer. If driving with cruise control your foot will be further from the brake than normal, whereas if you drive normally you will start to slow down as soon as you ease off the accelerator, and will get also get to the brake pedal quicker. When I tried cruise control I must admit there were also times that if driving normally I'd have eased of the accelerator but with cruise engaged I was slightly more reluctant to slow down given the need to then reset it.

I think this is the reason the adaptive systems are so much more useful. That said the cruise on mine is excellent and really good to relaxing on a quiet long drive. I find a mix of cc on the flat and off for the hill parts gets best mpg all round.

I get better economy not using cruise, but always use it for motorway speed camera areas so that I don't have to worry for the sake of a couple mpg

I can normally beat the cruise control quite comfortable. CC can't read the road ahead I can.

thanks guys for the info not tryed mine yet i wait on till the weather gets better and i let you now how i get on ok pete

use cc where ever I can and where I feel safe to do so. it wil give more smoother running than anybody's right foot can do. They say the smoother you drive the better all round performance is achieved. Although I don't have the figures to back it up.

Aaah, bless... Not been driving long huh?

One word to throw a spanner into your argument.

I didn't buy a 4x4 petrol to worry about mpg, love the laziness of CC, But don't forget kids, you can turn it off at will ;-)

I love cruise. Especially since 3 new speed-camera vans were placed into North Yorkshire last year. It's been an eye-opener seeing where they sit and try and catch folk (not where you would expect ie villages - but on rural country back-roads where you would NEVER expect them to be. Sly beggars.

Its one of those useful tools for certain circumstances in my opinion. I personally use it a lot when on open motorway for the comfort but agree it is not as safe in traffic. It will use more fuel for most drivers, but for me its a compromise between comfort and economy. I use ac and heated seats for comfort too and they dont save fuel either!

agree whole hearted with adamal.

My car went in for a service yesterday at Progres Skoda in Northampton, the courtesy car they gave me was a 150 mile old citigo auto, it had A/C and cruise and heated front seats, the hyper milers would have a fit!

O/T a bit but...lovely little town car if thats your thing, went ok considering I was missing 100 odd HP, well put together, handled nice and loads of space for such a little car. Not much rear leg room but I never sit there.... :giggle:

Aye. It just makes you think "what if they're just round this bend" and I don't see the point in risking it and being on edge all the time just to save a few minutes. I find it far more relaxing just going with the flow and not chasing the speed all the time plus you save money on the fuel bill.

Exactly my thoughts. I don't use it when there's traffic as you're constantly switching on and off but it makes the journeys in light traffic much for relaxing and I don't care if it might use a few MPG more.

Personally I use my cruise control quite a lot on duals and m-ways. My 1.9tdi returns a consistant 54 mpg (average) It amazes me how many timesI see a car hurtle past me on the downhill sections only to catch them up on the flat and pass them on uphill sections. I believe that engine revs being consistent is important to fuel economy, despite the fact that the amount of fuel injected increases when the engine is underload.

Got Cruise on my VRS, first car I've ever had with one, but after a year and a half of ownership I've never used it once.............. never found any need for it, I only use the motorway once or twice a month or so a bit pointless for my daily commute.

I can easily get 45+ mpg on the motorway (when I do use it) using my own skills, got 47.2 mpg not that long ago (posted a thread about it on here), and that's at 65-75mph all the way, so nice to have in the car, but a bit of a wasted thing on me.........

For those worrying about mobile speed cameras - use a Road Angel - not had a single worry since I got one of those some 8 years ago.......

How does your road angle keep rigidly to the posted speed limit?

Couple of the guys I work with have been on speed awareness courses, advice given was to use cruise when possible and safe to help maintain correct speed.

Especially useful in areas with specs cameras, roadworks are a great example of this.

Its easy in quiet modern cars for the speed to creep, making cruise an excellent tool to allow you to focus on your driving and not the speedo. It does not take away the requirement to pay attention though :-)

I don't agree with the course advice of 3rd for 30, 4th for 40 etc. That is a gash idea :-)

There is no etc. - the advise is 3rd for 30, 4th for 40, that's it.  Also advocated by the IAM.  Needs less gear changes than trying to use 4th in a 30 and then having to change down to 3rd if speed drops slightly.

Still, doesn't bother me since I bought a car with DSG!

Hmm, if its advocated by the IAM its got to be pap. The etc was for the rest of the sanctimonious gumph the speed lobby come out with. Probably didn't make that all that clear :-)

Less gear changes? Hell no! I love my slick 6 speed box any excuse to prod it down a gear and go....

Our little puma is even better, rifle bolt sharp crisp and accurate change.

Will be gutted when everything has a slush box in it ;-)
