I think 300lbft is too much torque. DISCUSS

Featured Replies

As per title really,

My fabia VRS has 170bhp and 300lbft and is my daily driver, a commute of 22 miles encompassing all of the major road types.

I am finding in this crappy weather that the excess torque is actually taking a lot of the fun away. It seems that I cannot use maximum throttle in any gear below fourth without doing crazy wheelspins or understeering away from roundabouts.

I cant help but think that a car with even half the torque (civic tpre r etc) would be more enjoyable in this kind of weather as the 'not so instantaneous' torque of other cars could be better used in these conditions.

What do you think?

I will say however that the torque really does make the vrs king between 50-90 (maybe thats a bit generous). Nothing comes close when you need to make some space between yourself and a tailgater etc.

I presume you mean 50-70? Unless your on a track of course ;-)

Mines 258 lb/ft between 2500 rpm and 5000rpm.

Not bad for a petrol, and no probs getting it from 50-90 either.

90 is at the very top of third gear @ 6500rpm.

(on this private road I know officer...)

Well obviously! Or Kmph or whatever..

I used to find the same thing in our old car.

Seat Cordoba PD130. Was very hard to not spin the wheels especially in damp weather.

It's also the same in the current car (184 lb/ft) but to a lesser extent.

I can't imagine having 300!

Civic type r is no fun in the damp either, all those revs = spinning

If you think you've got torque problems, you want to try driving a mk1 2.0l Fabia ... That would give you nightmares.

Mine has 173 bhp and 353ftlb !! Well that's what Awsomes rolling road said . I Can spin the wheels in 1st 2nd and 3rd in the wet . Once or 2wice I have had Evan them spin in 4th !

My Volvo had 460 Nm or 339 ftlb. No problem on dry or wet roads, but not so good in winter. Both winter and summer tyres were 235 wide, so more than enough traction during summer.

400 lb ft not enough for me! :D

Better tyres and better map delisting the power?

If it comes in a bloody great lump of course you will spin :)

I seem to be in a bit of a conundrum! Of course the more torque the better! But, I can't help thinking I'd be going faster if the car didn't throw away all it's power?!

I mentioned the type r as in my head I imagined that because they don't have much torque they wouldn't be so spinny* coming out of corners? But they have nice horse power higher in the revs meaning they won't spin initially but would be better and putting on the power once away from the corner?

Anyways. I think I just need some new tyres haha. I think I'll invest in some super stickies for the 'summer'.

Never had a issue personally.

Have you thought about doing some advanced driving? Sounds like smoother inputs are needed.

I am perfectly able to feather the throttle of needs be no advance driver training required thanks!

I simply feel that in this weather 300+lbft is a waste. If I can't put my foot to the floor on lower gears what's the point in having the power anyway.

Drag racing for example. A car with less torque will not have so much drama getting off the line while I'm feathering the throttle to control spin? I just think it's a waste. I just think it's a waste sometimes at lower speeds.

Mine at 370ftlb

I would be asking too much if I expect it to grip when I boot it in second in the wet. But in the dry it's awesome. I want more (and a diff)

A mechanical LSD such as a quife with good tyres will allow every single tourque to be delivered to the the tarmac.

It sounds like a bit of driver training would do you some good it this your approach to driving.

90... third gear @ 6500rpm.

Good god man what are you doing?  :peek:

As Joe and Rooney says, you need a diff not less torque. Better tyres might be a good idea too, I've got a bit more torque but dont have too many issues, just drive to the conditions.

Not driving a diesel :)

300 lb/ft in a diesel is nothing to shout about nowadays.

Personally, coming over from a previous 320 lb/ft derv, I always yeared for more. I had very good tyres though, and as mentioned, good traction makes a world of difference.

Drive to the conditions :)

You can spin the wheels in a standard vrs if you drive like a f1 driver

+1 I can spin up the wife's Touran if I try hard enough

+2. I can spin my cycle in the wet, I can also spin the Volvo and that's got AWD, torque limited gears and DSC. I can also drive without spinning too and it's in the region of 500 NM.
