Selling a highly modded Yeti.

Featured Replies

As I need to free up some cash for a property investment Ive been contemplating the worst case scenario... Selling Beti! Im still hoping to pull a few strings to raise the cash in other ways but it looks possible I may put her up for sale in the next few weeks.

So, how would you start working out how to value the car? What do people feel it would be worth? Obviously its not for the 'average' Yeti buyer - its more of a do it all vehicle - all the usual duties plus the performance, handling and breaking of something fairly nippy. Think Golf R thats been designed more for a family and owned by a dad that doesnt want to give up his performance vehicle just yet and I think we are along the right lines of the potential buying audience. :)

So, whats it worth? Its a 2010 Elegance with most of the option boxes ticked. Totally reliable and just the best car Ive ever owned all round (see, im already starting to not want to consider selling it!) Almost 40k on the clock, great condition and totally over serviced - as an example its had seven oil changes using the long life stuff already! (so every 5,000 miles basically).

Guesses? :)

  • As already mentioned the issue will be that it is such a niche market for this type of unique car as those looking for a modified car would not, I guess, be looking at a Yeti - certainly on the likes

  • Because Id still be 11k short then so I gain nothing and loose a good car. Thats a loose loose scenario.   Im pretty loathed to sell the Yeti tbh - had a great drive in it last night and it really m

Hmm. What sort of fuel economy do you get out of it...?

Shame it's not diesel based, I'd be first in the queue otherwise!

£12k.

What's you bank details?

Reality:

The car books around £13k-£14k I think.

Plus modding costs.

Not sure what you've spend, you'll get a bit of it back.

I think you need to price it around £15k-£16k IMO.

£12,001.

Bank details :D

Its cheaper to sell your body mate ;)

All jokes aside, if you leave it as is I would see it at around £16,500 ish, as you know standard sells best normally the market forfast SUV types is really take off see RSQ3 etc...

Knowing how you treat your cars its only had the best of everything, Hopefully you don't have to sell her but needs must.

Depending on the replies start it at £18,000 now  :giggle:

On the trader 4 others are listed with the same miles and engine size, The cheapest is around £14,500 at a dealers (non private), so assuming that someone can buy one of those and spend X at shark performance to get the same power to equal all the work you have had done over the years would cost them more than £2000 so that gives you the minimum figure

Interesting replies guys, thanks.

Ive seen over 44 mpg on cross euro cruises. 32-34mpg average everyday for my 10 mile traffic laden work commute. :)

Ive realistically spent around 5k on the performance mods with Shark Performance (they and the local dealer are the only ones that have touched it bar regular alignment at a race prep place near me) I need 15k to invest and this is the only reason im looking to sell her so that fits in with the general prices being thrown around so far. :) Id also need quite a quick sale so id probably think about 15.5k instead of anything higher and if the cheapest around at the moment is 14.5k I guess all the unique features of this one have to be worth £500 to someone!  :)

One word - BARGAIN

Books at £13500 private sale with £40k and good condition.

Trouble is, modded cars do not sell well, unless it is in the segment of the market that attracts the type of car that is usually modified (think Cossie, Impreza turbo etc not Yeti).

Unfortunately, with the average Yeti owner's age around the 60 mark (Briskoda recent survey refers), and not typical owners of modified cars I can't see that many potential buyers out there.

Best advise is to get it back to as near stock as possible, sell the modified bits separately and then ask £13995, but accept that most buyers will expect to pay a bit less.

Edit:

The cheapest £14.5k one mentioned is a dealer price, so you can reckon on £1k less for a private sale.

Nope, ive split other cars down in the past and yes ive got more back financally but I dont want to do it to this one - its truly better than the sum of its parts and the parts are actually very good!  I think Impreza etc and I think of dire fuel consumption (speaking from experience) and many downsides that would bug me on a day to day basis. For an everday useable car the Yeti is in a different league imo. From comments ive had either on here or from a local dealer, even the guy at the petrol station that asked why I needed Porsche brake calipers...  I think theres a small but potential market out there but thanks for the post. :)

Hmm.

Reckon that would cost me around £7-800/yr more in fuel than a CR170 that I'm hoping to find.

Plus I expect the insurance would be a tad higher :)

No matter how hard I try to justify it to myself, I can't :(

Honestly if you don't drive it hard you will get the MPG out of it, I am racking my brains to see if I know of someone that wants something that is very much a wow car.

Likewise - thats the reason I'm giving up the 1.8Tsi and going for the 140 CR. Even with kid gloves I'm below 30mpg :(

You have the wrong mindset it will ONLY  cost you an extra £1.92 a day in fuel

Brisky has very good modified car insurers as sponsors too

700/365=1.92

I have modified cars all my life (not recently though - too old), and have never got more than book price, but more often than not, much less.

Yes there may be a very few potential buyers who will pay over the odds for a modded car, but most people will be very wary of anything (especially a Yeti), that has been "tinkered" with, no matter how well the advert reads.

I once spent a fortune on one of my cars that I used to show, and was very happy to get private book price after 2 years (it was new BTW when I purchased), and that was to someone who followed the show circuit, and knew the car's history.

I have always been of the opinion that the money I spent on my cars was for my pleasure, and never expected to get any of the money back.

Be interesting to find out Rockhopper's views, as he is the only member who (as far as I recall), has sold a modded Yeti as he now has a Discovery (I think). Be good to know if he part exchanged and at what price, or if sold privately (easily) and achieved over book, book or below.

Good luck anyway.

To be honest, the fuel consumption is exceptional and compared to the 140CR on my work commute - ok it got an additional 6mpg but id expect a far bigger gulf between the two. The petrol warms up so much quicker and the diesel took an age before it started working efficiently. However, dont get me wrong, when you do push on hard, it will drink far more heavily than a 140CR ever would. Insurance for both of us to drive it fully comp is around £500 too. Funny, not many get stolen out of sheer desire.

Agree with a lot of that (having spent 44k on a Focus in a previous life) but Ive always done well with selling my cars on. I ran an Octy mk1 4x4 for two years and lost just £250 on it. My cars always seem to attract some sort of interest so it'll be interesting to say the least. :) Rockhopper went to a Freelander - I may drop him a PM tonight. Cheers. :)

Just stop it, will you.

:)

Regarding it drinking heavily when pushing on, I know how much my diesel economy drops on my favourite types of road (Cat'n'Fiddle, if you know it) when I'm in the mood, I dread to think how much yours plummets!

But what did you get for the Focus though?

The amount you spent on that (assuming it was on top of the purchase price), was a similar amount to what I spent (in today's money that is) back in the 80's on a modified MR2, and only got around £1k more than book - so that was a lesson I would not not want to repeat again in too much of a hurry.

Anyway, looking at the positives, you only need one buyer to agree to purchase.

Slightly unfair to say it cost me that much actually buit thats the total of what I spent - as it was only sold with the last engine (a built 2 litre Zetec running a GT28 turbo), one suspension setup (Bilstein PSS9's), one brake setup (Tarox 6 pots)... etc etc but the 40+k included two engines, two gearboxes, four suspension setups, two brake setups.... etc etc I got back £16,800 for the Focus in parts (think the standard car booked around 7-8k iirc but I also sold other bits along the way. Ive never ever modded a car, expecting to see the money back or even to think it adds any real value. :)

If only it were LHD, and we didn't have ridiculous import duties over here... You would have already gotten a cheque in the mail Yeti_Man!

I do hope you'll reconsider selling though, I doubt Beti will find as good a home, and you will definitely be missed on here.

Out of general interest, what will you be driving if you let Beti go?

if i can raise the funds another way, i will, as I've said, this is my least preferable option. :) In terms of what will I drive next, probably Sooty, my diesel Fiesta. ;)

I've sold my pride and joy 3 times to fund property investments and they have been  financially worthwhile.

It's a tough choice but I know money is fairly cheap at the moment and I got a 5 year fixed deal for 2.99% 2 months ago.....might be worth checking out

that's very encouraging to hear - this one isn't in the uk so the mortgage route isn't that straight forward but it is one I'm looking at since approx three hours ago! :)

Raise the cash on your main home. Probably cheaper than raising foreign funds or funds to invest abroad.
