Potential new estate owner... Same old newbie questions!

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Thought I would start by introducing myself...

I'm Tom. Paramedic by trade and a family man buying his first house... I am therefore selling this:

Its a 59 plate Mondeo Titanium X Sport with Eibachs, Airtec Intercooler, RS K&N Cone Filter, Full stainless custom exhaust with decat and DPF delete. Collins bespoke custom remap (240 ish BHP) 20" Riva DTM alloys, black wrapped roof, lower lip and diffuser. Panther Black Bonnet Lip and Wing mirrors. Think thats it. Selling it as I am buying my first house with my wife. Need the cash to pay for solicitors etc etc.

Someone is coming to look at it on thursday and possibly part exchanging a 57 plate Octavia VRS TDCI estate. 75k full service history, recent service with belts done. Long MOT. 3 owners. Is a value of around £6.5k realistic?

I will of course be modding it quite rappidly... lowered and wheels to start with. As you can see I am no stranger to modding cars... but new to the VAG (Is that right?) scene.

One of my other cars...

So is there a buyers guide or something on here?? Any common problems to look out for?

Thanks in advance guys and girls!

57 VRS Cr170 estate on Parkers is £6125 for a good private 70k car. Dealers is around £7.5. £6.5 seems spot on if its immaculate...

Not very often I'd say this, but I love the Mondeo!!

Cheers dude... Looking forward to a new car to play with!

That is one nice mondeo.

I hope YOU get the right money for it.

I think me and the guy coming to look are on the same page... he's getting a bargain of a car with big spec... I'm getting the money I need plus a (Hopefully) well looked after practical vehicle.

Now what lowering kit/wheels to buy??

Couple of nice cars there. Welcome to the forum :)

My top tip for your suspension question (assuming its a raod car not a track day hack): h&r monotubes, fitted up with superpro ALK at the front plus h&r rear anti roll bar. I've run five different setups and this is the best I've found for my needs.

Wheels - a lot is down to personal taste, but the oem wheel is 13.5kg so whatever weight you can save makes a noticeable performance benefit. My neuspeeds are around 9kg a corner.

So, you're getting the money you *need*, and spending it on mods?...

Sounds like a plan! Wish the Mrs could think like that :(

Found out today... We don't "need" all the dosh! Our mortgage offer has been upped to cover the whole asking price! Need some for solicitor fees etc. So have some dosh to re-invest in my hobby. The missus understands as I have saved about 80% of our deposit and funds and have put my car up for sale.

So still have about 3k cash leftover... Thinking wheels and lowering... The rest can go in the safety pot!

Firstly... thanks for the comment.

Secondly... with regards to lowering... My total budget is around £500 total for everything. I know its not going to be the best setup in the world... but ive ran Eibachs with standard dampers on the last 2 cars with no issues... just fancy going a bit lower. Whats an ALK?

Got it... Pics to follow. Happy! :)

Sorry, alk= anti lift kit, basically revised geometry via modified bushings, improves handling. Several options, superpro does good quality kit. http://superpro.com.au/products

You'll need a geo check after fitting suspension anyway so makes sense to do this at the same time.

H&R cup kit would be a good option, better than eibachs with stock dampers and will be lower too.

Got the extra cash? Don't go spending it just because it's burning a hole in your pocket, on stuff you don't really need!

Mike

Dude... wheels and slamming are ESSENTIAL! I now have more than enough extra cash. We thought that we were having to put £3k cash into the house sale. When we went to the mortgage people they had a mortgage set up for the full amount. So I got £4.5K plus the Octavia for my car... So £3k in the savings bank. £1.5k for wheels, tyres and lowering!!

Cars are a big part of my life, maintaining, modding, cleaning and being on forums. My only real spending goes on the car. I don't go out at weekends and get hammered anymore - too old now! Don't smoke, wear the same clothes from 1997.

Some pics after giving the Octavia a quick wash and dry. Dodging the hail storms to clean it for the first time. Couple of minor scratches. But all panels straight and no dings. Interior is spotless, last owner had seat covers on from when he got it! The wheels are suffering from lacquer peel. But they will get refurbed when I get the new ones on. Was surprised as I thought the estates came with 17" wheels, these are 18".

Very happy with the motor. Pulls well, feels tight and steady on the road. Does feel a bit smaller inside than the Mondeo. But nice place to sit.

Nice!

Know the feeling about the same clothes from 1997 :-)

We have got out of the small boring economical car trap. My Octavia is great fun and gets on average 35mpg, boot it or tow my boat with it and it goes south, who cares? Not me! Once out of warranty it will get breathed on a bit, why? Cos like you cars have and always will be a big part of ny life, its a job to get the petrol out of your blood....!

Mrs wheels are a 1.7 puma which again, isn't that good on juice as you can't help but drive it hard. Running costs are cheap though. 1.25 fiesta or a full fat puma? No brainer!

It will be replaced by a ST or possibly a 208 gti, couple of vag cars to look at too. Do we need a hot hatch? Probably not, do I want a eco warriors conveyance? Hell no!

Keep enjoying your wheels dude, one day the co2 doom merchants will get their way but till then, more power to your right foot!

Yeah the cup kit looks good. Has anyone used them? Like the idea of the full package.

A 57 plate vRS will have a PD170 lump under the bonnet. The CR170 (Common Rail) didn't find its way into the vRS until 2008.

Has it had the injector recall? All VAG PD170's were recalled for all four injectors to be replaced FOC. There will be a recall sticker under the boot floor next to the spare wheel well.

Also watch out for the DPF light. They are a well documented weak point on the 2.0 TDi PD engines.

Looks a nice spec. Factory fit xenon's. If it has the 18's then it will have Climatronic, electric rear windows and the jumbo box.

The aftermarket tints look quite smart too.

Thanks for that info. Will check in the boot on Monday.

What is a Jumbo Box??

Ordered some H&R springs today... Nice!

The jumbo box is the far from 'jumbo' storage space under the central armrest. It contains an A/C vent, AUX-in and up/down, forward/backward arm rest.

Good work that man! Keep us updated. Doing suspension myself next. Make sure you detail all the parts you get! :)

So far... Wheels, springs, tax disc holder, 2x stickers, bosch wipers on order.

Mondeo looked a lovely car... I recognise it from somewhere? Talkford?

Good to see you've switched, I too had a 09 2.2 Titanium X before swapping to a 10 Octavia vRS estate ableit a black one!

Are you planning any engine modifications?

Yeah it was o talkford and a few other forums.

Engine mods for the Octavia will happen. Just need to get moved into new house and see what we need first. Thinking of CAIS, decat, DPF delete and full stainless system. Then a remap. Kind of the same as the Mondeo.
