4G - not all its cracked up to be?

Featured Replies

Just upgraded to Vodafone 4G after my area was enabled. Despite what their coverage checker said I couldn't get a 4G signal anywhere round here. Even when I was in Central London the other day it was patchy and they said I would really have to be outside to use it - oh and it doesn't handle moving from a 3 to a 4G area well so you need to force the phone onto another network and then back to vodafone to get 4G.

After 6 days I rang them today and downgraded back to my 3g tariff.

Has anyone else experienced this or was I just unlucky?

what's 4G?  Don't even have a reliable phone signal here - would be quicker with a G G

I have a 4G S4... tis terrible. I wish i hadnt given my dad my 3G S2 now! Cant wait for my 2 years to be up then its going to pretend to be an albanian off a ferry!

O2 gave me a week free trial last week to see if I liked it and wanted to upgrade - what a load of tosh.

Couldn't pick bu66er all up, never worked, useless.

Needless to say I won't be spending more money.

I have EE 4G and works very very well in Cardiff, come back home to Barry and it's 3G. Just waiting for the masts to be upgraded. Not an issue for me but nice when in a 4G area as it flies. I am using a Iphone 5C.

Yep, very impressed with 4G in Hull.

Got fed up with a lousy signal with Tesco (O2), so thought I would try a PAYG EE 4G sim before get a contract.

So far I get around 25mbps down, & between 5-25mbps up.

The few places I can't get the 4G signal I still get a healthy 3G signal.

I guess it's down to postcode lottery like most things.

Just waiting for double speed 4G now :)

I am on three and get 4G for no extra, complete with all you can eat data.

I was in Watford 2 weeks ago and got a 4G signal for the first time ever on my iphone5. Standing in the middle of the Harlequin shopping centre speedtest.net reported a download speed of 58meg and an upload speed of 21meg, and this was with 4 bars of signal.

However, I was in Harrow a short time later and managed just 6meg down which is slower than 3G.

I am glad I don't pay any extra for 4G and have no data usage restrictions, compared to some other providers.

I'm the same as Mannyo, on three. Noticed last week every now and then it going to 4G and loading a bit quicker. Worked well, not issues moving to and from 3 & 4G either. I personally dont download enough stuff over mobile data service but my mate uses a fair few music apps and stuff and likes the extra speed.

What's 4G? I barely get 3G!

Galaxy S4 on EE and get pretty good signal everywhere in Edinburgh. Great download/upload speeds Annoying as hell when I commute to work in Falkirk and it switches to H+ - slower than a snail.

iPhone 5 on EE 4G - lots of signal around Middlesbrough and Hartlepool. Quite impressed with it

As said, I would much rather they properly sort the infrastructure and current 3G performance.

The add insult to injury, I actually think existing services have suffered as a result of this attempted 4G upgrade, on O2 anyway. Particularly in relation to the good old telephone call; my signal and call quality is now worse in areas and places that it's been fine for 10 years! I don't find that a co-incidence.

Interesting. It's my work phone on Vodafone and I'm supposed to be in a solid 4G area. Even in central London it was patchy.

My personal phone is on 3 but there's no 4G from them any time soon.

When I did get a signal it was a 55mb one according to the speed test I did.

3g coverage is patchy enough as has been said.

I'm on EE and to receive and use 4G I needed a 4G SIM card, a 4G enabled handset & and a 4G price plan..........have you confirmed with Vodafone that these requirements are in place???

You also need to make sure that Vodafone's 4G frequency is compatible with the frequency used by your handset.

It won't work otherwise.

Vodafone are diabolical for signal (work phone). So glad I never went to them. EE are much better

Yup 4G sim, handset and plan. No joy. 4g worked in a few places but very patchy.

EE non existent signal here only Vodafone is any good so I don't have changed choice

We're lucky to get 2G round here.

Bro in law lives in London and found EE terrible on 4G, constantly dropping calls.

If they can't get it right in the capital they're not likely to get it right anywhere else.

I've been on an EE 4G contract since it launched. When I have 4G it is blisteringly quick, but yes, it is always best outside. It is even faster than my BT Infinity at times.

It has improved big time over the past 15 months. There are many black holes around London where service isn't great, but that seems to be across all networks.

When I don't have 4G, it switches to 3G no problem.

iPhone 5.

I have my iPhone 5S on EE's 4G network and it is brilliant.  I always had a very weal 2G signal in my house but I have a 4 bar 4G signal now.  In belfast the 4G internet speed is faster than my BT infinity broadband at home (in the case of uploads much much faster).  I was surprised to find that the 4G in the centre of London was only about 25% as fast as it is in the centre of Belfast and half as quick as in my rural villiage!.

I won't touch it for a long time yet. The technology to drive it in the UK isn't up to scratch by a long way and with the networks faffing about installing the 4G network I've noticed a considerable drop in the call quality & reliability of the 3rd network and Internet connection.

I'm not prepared to pay a premium for a service that is not up to scratch.

Out of curiosity, what speed do you get on EE's 4G in Edinburgh?

Can't complain at all with Vodafone, works on all coverage bands

4G flies when it's in range

Noticed 4g on o2 recently in Birmingham and Liverpool. I got sent new Settings sent through and is included in current tariff.

For web browsing it marginally quicker but there is still a delay before the page starts loading.

I actually picked up 4G on Tesco/O2 in Edinburgh today.

It would flick from 2G to 4G within the same room despite the bars staying the same. No 3G. I guess when they switch on 4G they switch off 3G?

Didn't actually try to use it.

No they don't switch off 3G, there are so many 3G phones out there. 4G is in addition to 3G as I understand it.

I'm heading off to the Isle of Skye tonight. I wonder what, if any, mobile service there will be where we are staying. (let alone 4G....)
