4G - not all its cracked up to be?

Featured Replies

You'll probably get something near the larger towns and not much anywhere else.

No they don't switch off 3G, there are so many 3G phones out there. 4G is in addition to 3G as I understand it.

I'm heading off to the Isle of Skye tonight. I wonder what, if any, mobile service there will be where we are staying. (let alone 4G....)

The one that either involves smoke signals or semaphore flags.  :giggle:

It was reported that a lot of early 4G phones would have issues switching between 3G & 4G, and that the speeds of the enhanced 3G standard (aka 3.5G), were not significantly lower than the current achievable 4G speeds - at least in the UK.

They also reported that the constant switching from 3-4-3 would drain batteries very quickly, so unless you were in a very good 4G area, to set your phone to use 3G only.

I do pick up the enhanced 3G. I wondered what they hell it was since it appeared as either H or H+.

So for 3G you actually have 3G<H<H+

from somewere on the web

G is GPRS ~ 86kbps
E is EDGE ~ 236kbps
3G is UMTS ~ 386kbps
H is HSDPA ~ 3.2Mbps
H+ is HSPA ~ 7.2Mbps or HSPA+ (14.4Mbps or 21.1Mbps)

Yep, very impressed with 4G in Hull.

Got fed up with a lousy signal with Tesco (O2), so thought I would try a PAYG EE 4G sim before get a contract.

So far I get around 25mbps down, & between 5-25mbps up.

The few places I can't get the 4G signal I still get a healthy 3G signal.

I guess it's down to postcode lottery like most things.

Just waiting for double speed 4G now :)

25mb on 4G?? I get more on 3G!

I am in the sticks where O2 which I have just left after about 10 years can't even give me a good voice & text signal, now on Three without 4G I am well happy! O2 while trying to talk me out of cancelling tried telling me about them rolling out 4G, I asked when I would be likely to be able to use SMS or voice in my area as they still haven't gotten around to us..... Kind of killed the poor customer service persons pitch lol.

H+ is doing well for me here:
