new golf R32

Featured Replies

And the old one looked different how, exactly? ;)

Agree - pretty dull though :thumbdwn:

Thats the one bad thing about golfs - they all look the same except the first R32 - quickest and most flash looking wheel barrow around...

looks ok, exhausts should be further appart tho :(

i thought it was going to be an R36 this time round

Never understood why VW faffed about with their performance version names.

Should have stuck to golf GTI as the sportiest model with the engine out of this one.

That is the worst positioning of exhaust pipes I have ever seen

looks like a new clio with those exhausts! rumour was R36 as it was going to have a 3.6 V6 this time round, guess not :( performance aint much better than the GTi really

I'm not very well up on Golfs but isn't the 3.2 a normally aspirated engine? Hence it wouldn't be likely to produce that much more than a 2.0 turbo anyway - just have different characteristics, I would have thought.

i think the last one was about 230bhp ish??? this one is 250bhp. was meant to be the performance effort, the last one was much faster than the mkiv gti-down to the fact the last gti was slow

it said about plans for an R36 but probably in Jetta form.

looks like a big clio fomr the back with those pipes, they look pants in my opinion

Shame the 3.6 (to be used in R36) hasn't slipped its way into new vRS!

Volkswagen AG has released the first official information on the new Golf R32 for the German/European market. The immediate question that will come to North American enthusiasts minds is why another 3.2l VR6? The 3.2l VR6 in this latest generation R32 now has fuel stratisfied injection (FSI) technology and now outputs 250hp more efficiently and with better economy. 250hp is more than adequate for the hot hatch market competition in Europe. Here in North America though the R32 Golf would face competition in the form of the Subaru WRX STI and Mitsubishi Evolution which push the 300hp boundries in power.

For that reason the current rumors for the U.S. market indicate Volkswagen is instead working on a 300hp version of the new 3.6l VR6 FSI for an "R36" model. Right now the Golf R36 is currently being planned, but there are discussions about creating an R36 Jetta this time around. If you'd like to see a Jetta R36 in addition to a Golf R36 for the U.S. market be sure and chime in with your opinion at the end of this story in our forums.

I don't like it. The MkIV R32 was a thing of functional beauty - it just looked right. I've still got it as my desktop wallpaper. The MkV looks like the Max power brigade got a look in - it's too fussy in the details and still looks like a Nissan Almera Tino from the front just with a big bumper.

Those tailpipes, round and relatively small, should have been next to each other like the Mini Cooper S. At that position, they look tiny and stupid. I would have prefered if the spaced them wider apart and made them bigger and more oval like the vRS without the two ports on the inside..likee two big oval holes really...that would have really defined the rear of the new R32. If somebody (LYK) can photoshop the image in my head you'll see exactly what I mean.

230bhp to 250bhp is a very small difference in my opinion, considering the fact that the MKV is probably quite heavier than the MKIV model...VW should have aimed for at least 280bhp to really have a 'new' R32 out in the market.

Looks quite nice though...

IMO heavier engine with not considerably more power than the GTI (it can be chipped to have same power anyway) will make it pretty dull in comparison.. anyway if you like the sound and consumption of the V6, then....

Looks cr*p compared to the old R32, those exhaust pipes look daft, Mk5 golf is definitely not what I would have expected from VW, never liked it from the start. Old R32 looked much beefier externally, this one looks like a 2.0 fsi with bits stuck on/sprayed a different colour, far too blobby and overweight-looking...

and thats different to the MKIV how?

The old r32 was miles nicer. Looks like vag are going to have troubling times ahead looking at the latest cars they're bringing out.
