In my country it's not allowed to advertise "free", because there is no such thing. They have to say "included in the price" or something like that.

VAG group vehicles seem to go more on their particular oil code e.g. VW 502.00 for the Citigo. When I changed ours the dealer gave me Quantum 5W 40 sinthetic which is what they use.

The same oil as in the bottle supplied with the car, isn't it?

There was no bottle of oil supplied with the car.

I had no oil in mine either. Done 7100 miles and it hasn't used any yet

As "Owens" already told, there is no given viscosity for the oil at all. They only give VW requirements, which can be found at owner's manual. It depends do you have fixed or variable service intervals.

As above or Mobil 1 ESP 5w 30. Handbook says to VW spec 502 00, which can be either of the aforementioned oils.

Btw I got a bottle of Castrol edge with my Citigo but use the Mobil in it, well the cup full it took between services.

Mobil ESP 5w-30 meets 504.00 requirements, it's for variable service intervals. 502.00 is for fixed service intervals, it's often 5w-40 oil.

No reason to think about viscosity really. Just be sure that oil meets or exceeds given VW requirements.

Requirements can be found from the other side of the bottle. It's probably VW 504 00. It's needed if your car is programmed for variable service intervals. If your car is programmed for fixed service intervals then VW 502 00 is good enough. Always check from your own owner's manual to be sure. If you hesitate, please contact your dealer.

For me they gave Mobil ESP oil, because that's the oil what my dealer likes to sell. They don't ask more than 28€/liter. But this given bottle was included in car price.

Ofcourse they want to teach the customer to use most expensive oil.

Castrol recommend that particular long life oil (504.00) for both variable and fixed service intervals for the Citigo/Up/Mii. My VW dealer also said it was fine for fixed service intervals.

The Up manual states the same, provided that the petrol you use meets certain standards (which ours in the UK does).

It's not important what Castrol says actually. What car manufacturer says is important. Dealer is somewhere between what comes to reliability.

Yes, with fixed service intervals you could use both, VW 502 00 or VW 504 00. If service intervals are variable you have to use VW 504 00.

For my Ocky on variable service its 506.01. 

It's a diesel? It's another story. Don't use anything else than 506.01 for that car.

Fixed here as well. And I like it more. "Variable" is mentioned at the manufacturer's service manual.

Well ours goes in tomorrow evening for servicing (FOC) on Tuesday. They even gave me a car as i originally had it booked in for the Saturday. I mentioned it may need the software update for the radiator fan problem? will wait and see if they moan about the coding?

Well no problems with the car on the service and they did the engine management update (cooling fan) as well. and they stamped the service book for both jobs!
