electronic start on diesel mkiii octavia

Featured Replies

Im probably being dumb here having had the car since September but Ive only just noticed that on the diesel the car automatically goes through the glow-plug --> startup procedure by itself.

I assume its to do with having the electronics ready for KESSY but ive been starting as if its a mark 2 all this time.

Turn to position 1, wait for glowplug to go then press position 2 until started.

Now Ive found on a cold morning you can turn the key once and release and it does the glow plug, starts then disengages when started.

Feel really dumb having taken this long but wondered if anyone else was in the same camp and not noticed  :)  :drunk:

Not noticed this myself, I just turn straight to position 2 as it won't start until the glowplug light has gone out so I just hold it there and wait til it starts....

So you're saying you move it to position 1 (ignition on) and it just starts itself?

sorry no, didnt explain it very well.

move straight to pos 2 then disengage straight away.  It will do the glowplug for however long it needs it, spark the alternator then automatically disengage :)

(not tested on a manual by the way, only diesel dsg vrs)

Same process on manual - just need to keep clutch depressed to start.

I'll try that in the morning :)

I've got this on my seat exeo, was quite surprised when i noticed it as was a first for me, i don't think this is new tech as the exeo is based of the audi a4 b7 which has to be several years old.

I've got so used to it that whenever I drive my fiancée's Rapid I tend to fail to start it!

It also automatically restarts the engine if you stall it I've noticed.

Yep, you can try and turn the key to start it as quick as you like but the car will decide you're too hasty and make you wait!

This feature has been available on many cars for a long time (the Volvos I've driven in past had it )

I guess if you turn the key and hold it in Pos3 it will override the glowplugs and start cranking straight away.

Stall Recovery it's one of the nicer features to come as a result of the additional sensors needed for stop start.

It's so good most people won't realise it's there.

Nope, it won't even turn over until the glow plugs have heated up.

Tried this this morning and it works, just turn the key all the way and let go, once the glow plugs have warmed up it starts itself! :)

bonkers that it's taken so long for me to notice but I was so used to doing it manually on the mkii

I had no idea until you brought it up, it's a pretty cool feature :)

Yep noticed this fairly soon after getting the car, the engine starting message also appearing.

My car failed to turn over 1st time the other day; hasn't done it since. Put it down to one of those early life anomalies. As soon as the first attempt failed it immediately turned over again and fired up without having to turn the key again so theres a fair bit of intelligence there.

Something similar on the wife's Smart Roadster - was most disconcerting when I released the key and it continued to turn over (battery was low on charge).  Kept doing it until I turned the key to the "Off" position.

Crazy Germans, eh?

I guess it's no different to those (modern) cars that just have a starter button - wait for start conditions and turn it over until it fires.  We just feel we're in control with the key.  How wrong...

The thing that always ****s me up is when stop/start is active and has stopped the engine while sat at traffic lights and i do something like turn on the heated screen on or adjust the climate control and it automatically starts the engine, always makes me jump!

Works on 2011 Superb Greenline as well.

Ooooh I never knew this either. Cheers guys!

Tried it out today after reading this last night...  clever stuff...  and there was me waiting for the glow plug light to go out before turning the key further!

On a cold morning last week went to car, opened drivers door, stood outside car, foot on brake, turned the key to start the car then after a second released key (as it's normally started by then) only for engine to keep turning over until maybe 1/2 second later it started on it's own.

Didn't know if it was a fault or a design feature until now.

Would have been nice for it to be included in the owners manual about this!

I cant say ive ever needed to notice this. The glow plug light goes out so quickly in pos. 1, that its usually gone out before i think of turning her over. A couple of secs usually. Perhaps upto 5 secs at the worst of times.
