Sat Nav SD Card on Bolero

Featured Replies

*Hypothetical question: Will a Skoda branded sat nav SD card 'just work' on the Bolero in a new vrs? This is envisaging a situation in which someone obtains said SD card and inserts it into their new vrs which isn't specced with nav as a factory option...

I think not to be honest, apart from the system not being programmed to deal with the SD card in that way, the units that do have sat nav I think have 2 x sd card readers?

You wouldn't have a GPS unit so it wouldn't work anyway. Also, there isn't a sat-nat button on the Bolero so how would you access the mapping function?

Nice idea but I can't see it working.

Not going to work, the Bolero has no navigation functionality at all. Another member has also tried upgrading from the Bolero to Columbus and failed because of the security built into the Octy3 infotainment system. If you want navigation it must be spec'd at the factory, or use an aftermarket garmin/tomtom etc.

need new head unit im afraid.

for some reason Audi A3 can be upgraded from any model to have sat nav with just the card but octavia cant :(

Thanks everyone - I only ask as my vrs is 3 months away from delivery, hopefully, and of course the demo was fully Columbused up so I haven't seen a Bolero in the flesh, so to speak. My current Passat Sport has built in satnav and it isn't that great tbh, and when we go on holiday I've always wished I had a portable unit to take with me, so I couldn't even begin to justify a grand or more to have one built in. I'll just buy a decent Garmin soon...

It is possible to get a plug and play set from a german Company called  axionag.de. You dont have to replace anything. You can use the touchscreen on the Bolero to navigate

They demonstrate how it Works on youtube.  http://youtu.be/Sf0goGmS7rk

I'm with you on this, that's just too much money for a plug in that also doesn't work with the maxi dot display.

I'm sure Skoda will release something although reckon it will also be silly money, that's why I've gone for the copilot sat nav on my iphone5, £20 and you  get speed cameras, 3d maps and traffic and it's worked faultlessly. I won't be replacing unless I can get hold of Columbus unit for under £500 :-)

I agree co pilot on phone. Excellent.I use it when abroad as I have the full Europe version. You can plan a route while sat in the house and even just use it to workout what time to set off for a destination.

Decuk, I noticed you're waiting for your new VRS to arrive, out of interest was the co pilot good enough for you not to spec sat nav on your new car?

Yes. As I say, if in the house and you say how far to..... Just go on copilot. Going to Spain with it tomorrow.screen slightly smaller obviously but U like it. Think there is a free version you can try on an app

Should have said I like it. Sending from phone. Bad eyesight and big fingers

I have Co-Pilot on a Nexus 7 tablet and it has replaced my 10 year old Mio sat-nav unit.  Just trying to find a simple, convenient way to mount the tablet in the car below windscreen level.  I have found details on a mount that clamps into the CD slot - anyone have any experience of such a mount?

You'll have a hard job since the cd slot is in the glovebox!

There are a good few mounts that use air vents or pieces that clip into the gaps in the dash.

Google and ye shall find.

Thanks for the Copilot suggestion - I did pay for it a few years ago and uninstalled when I got the Passat, forgot all about it! Is it right to assume it's not necessary to have the phone connect to a mobile network, are the maps pre-downloaded?

Maps are pre loaded on the co pilot so you don't have to have a phone signal, just gps signal which if your iPhone or adroid couldn't achieve, neither could your car so it should work as well as the inbuilt unit.

There are of cousre pros and cons to both,...

Reinstalled, free upgrade and seems to do the job, from the lounge at least - I'll give it a bash tomorrow. Any recommendations on mounts for the phone (iphone 5 currently and for the foreseeable future)? Been looking at RAM, but there are quite a few options for the suction base...

I just get a cheap version from Wilkinson's department store.£3.99 I think. But use the very small adhesive mount that it clips into if vents are wrong type. Used it for years. When it breaks cheap to replace.

Well, tried on a journey I wasn't familiar with yesterday and all worked very well. The only niggle was that, since my phone is automatically connected to the car by Bluetooth, I could only hear instructions when I'd selected Bluetooth audio in media, hence no DAB or iPod whilst driving...

Does anybody know, is Columbus exactly the same as VW RNS 510? I believe Boleros touch screen capabilities are much better than RNS 510.

If you are using an iPhone you should be able to choose for directions to come from your phone rather than through Bluetooth, that way you can use DAB or iPod etc; no sound reduction during direction announcements though

I'm probably being useless but I can't find anything in settings, iphone or app, to let that happen. Any pointers?
