Daytime running lights on Auto?

Featured Replies

From those lucky enough to be early test pilots, is it possible to set the daytime running lights to come on only when it starts getting dark?

I would have liked to have them coming on "early" and the main lights taking over "late".

IMO DTRL is not very useful in bright sunshine.

Reading the bible seems that you can only switch them on or off and when the main lights come on, in auto mode, the DTRL get switched off?

Some call them Daytime Running lights, maybe there was a Translation error at some point with EU legislation.

'Daylight Running Lights',

on when its bright and Sidelights & Headlights are not required like in poor visibility or getting dark time.

Night time when dark or getting dark and dusk or dawn is surely time for lights on front and rear, and ones that do not dazzle other road users.

"Daytime running lights"..... There's a clue there somewhere....

The DRL's come on when the headlights are off. In auto mode the headlights come on when the sky darkens, automatically turning off DRL's. The DRL's are designed to make you more visible during the daytime.and IMO can be seen very well in bright sunlight.

Are you sure? My DRLs go dimmer when the headlamps are on, but remain lit.

Yep DRLs stay on and just dim with dipped headlights.

I was wrong. I just tested it and the DRL's do indeed stay on when the headlights come on. They should call them D&NRL's.

On a mk2 Fabia vRS the Unit that is the DRL's during Daylight/Daytime are the same units that become dimmer and is then the sidelights,

that is when the Sidelights or Headlights are switched on,

or on as a single unit dimmer when being the Parking Light.

So DRL's when on as such, Sidelights when they are less bright.

The idea is forget them as beings DRL's when they are not lit as such.

Be that on a Skoda, Merc, Audi or whatever.

Thanks for the comments. My DRL's will most likely be deactivated until they become of use at dusk or night time.

A bit of a gadget and a little too "bling bling" for my liking, but may change my opinion with time.

They do look very good a night :)

Overall I prefer the simple bar style of these LEDs/DRLs (whatever) to the more complex and "artistic" shapes from many other manufacturers.

Yes some "artistic shapes" just look too feminine for my taste - remind me of someone LOL

But they're no use at night, unless you don't want to see where you going.....

If it's dark enough that you feel the need for lights then you need dipped headlights.

I think all new cars will have them fitted by law very soon.

You can't see them from inside but the half blind morons sharing the roads might have half of chance of seeing you so I'd be leaving them as is!

Also, I'm not sure about France but they maybe be subject to an MOT failure over here if they don't operate. I could be wrong  on that one though.

They're also useless at night as you won't have any lights on at the rear, as I see too many morons doing. Especially in audis as their drls are so bright.

Me? I like to be seen and never switch my headlights off.

Aaaah

I see now! I forgot you could do that! Doh!!

I was thinking about finding someone with vcds and getting the rears turned on with the drls.

The DRLs stay on with dipped just like in that photo but dimmed as they'd otherwise be too bright at night and dazzle other drivers...

I think the drls also double up as your side lights, though as said,a bit dimmer

Yes but unlike the mkII there are also normal sidelight bulbs that work too.
