Hey sharkrider,

Have you checked the rubber gaiter around the gear stick?

I changed it on my brothers eunos.

This is what it looked like when i got the centre consol out ygapuryh.jpg and here is the new and old together hame6ahu.jpg

Also changed the turret oil while i was at it. Made a big difference to gear changes

Thanks for that, its on my list of things to do, as I get allot of heat comming through there and had read that happens whn the gater is knackered :)

can you explain what you mean by changted the turret oil? and with what ? ta!

Yes that's what you need.

re the turret oil - the bottom end of the gearstick (below the small round gaitor), which inlcudes a ball joint arrangement, sits on top of the gearbox in a small hollow turret (liike a castle turrett - hence the name).  This contains a small amount of gearbox oil in it to lubricate the mechanism and ball joint etc. If your gaiters have split the chances are that oil has dried out and the turrett is bone dry, relying on the nylon ball joint for slippyness.  Lift out the centre console and take off both gaitors.  If there is any oil left it can be sucked out wit a syringe and then replaced with fresh  (can't remember the quanitity needed but it' s not much (90ml or so from memory but I can check later if needed).

Time to fix the leak.... right , first job, remove all the airbox, and associated fixings so I can access the bottom pipe.... I only broke to things, and lost one screw.... much more of a bloody pain of a job than I thought :(

IMG_1958.jpg

Airbox out....

IMG_1959.jpg

Bottom hose off... it was SO old and knackered I had to cut it off one end... it had welded itself on... looks a sorry state..

IMG_1961.jpg

Baby Phantom is bleeding! (yes I did try to collect it, but failed miserably)

IMG_1960.jpg

Decided to ditch the horrible rusty old clips, and bought some new stainless steel jubilee's :)

IMG_1962.jpg

nice shiny new bottom hose installed.... went on allot easier than the old one came off!

IMG_1963.jpg

I then had to re-install all the airbox and fixings ect ..... not too hard.... then fitted the top hose, easy due to easy access.... shiny :)

IMG_1964.jpg

topped it all up with appropriate coolant, ran it, bled it, made sure it ran hot properly blarg bvlarg.... all seems good.

only problem is there is another small hose in the boot... as I couldn't gain access without a ramp.... its either going to have to go on when I next have the car in a garage with my tame mechanic, OR if it fails, and the recovery person comes to my rescue ;)

everything under the bonnet is obviously OLD... the plactic clips to all the connectors are so faded and weakened with time, that they are brittle..... as the years go by, gonna have to systematically replace everything I think....

to be fair, I think I have already done more miles in it than is has done  in the last 2 years!

anyway. leak fixed.

Hey sharkrider,

Sorry for the delayed reply although skomaz seems to have covered it.

As skomaz says its the oil in the top of the gearbox thats accessible when the gators are removed.

I used one of these to remove the small amount of oil in there and put in just under 100ml of new oil (i think it is 75w80 but you best check that)

I believe its the same oil as the main gearbox oil so if are planning on changing that as well then you might be best getting enough to do both.

Also has the oil in the LSD been changed recently? For the small cost and while have the car on ramps if you do change the gearbox oil you may as well change the LSD oil too.

right I have been to the new forest meet and back in baby phantom! a lovely car to drive a long way, comfortable, and 780km done without issue at all! amazing, considering how old it is and how cheap it was!

HOWEVER I now have new prioroties after getting stuck in traffic with the car , boiling from the exhaust heat comming through to the cabin, and the 30C air temp!

it was tolorable when moving BUT I now have a new list

FIRST : get the gearlever gators replaced, in the hope to cut some of the heat coming in the cabin..

SECOND: FIX the aircon!!!!!! I wasn't going to bother, now I'm going to get it working.... would have killed to get cold air on my face! the compressor works ect , and it feels like it chills the air a tiny bit, gonna get it checked out and regassed! lol...

otherwise, great weekend in the car :)

in a recent storm, my "beatheable" cover was blown off, and my boot collected water! :o I have dried it, dried the carpet, and got a "proper" cover that is actually waterproof! :)

IMG_2268.jpg

Have you managed to work out where the water was getting in - it's usually the foam seals around the rear lights or, vary rarely under the chrome plates where the mushroom bolts are for the hard top.

Our little mx5 had some major surgery, having had one side of the rear wheel bearings done, it was still noisy & it was either LSD oil ( lack of) or other side wheel bearing.

Went in to get other wheel bearing done & on removal they had found it had siezed in the hub, 2000lb in a press for approx 20 mins wouldnt shift it, increase pressure & bang goes wheel hub, already had a lower wishbone for this side as it looked a tad iffy, so it was now time for replacement drive shaft & wheel hub , the lower part of the suspension had also siezed into the lower wishbone.( not the spring)

A bit of chopping up the wishbon & some grinding out saved the suspension, so now i needed new lower bolt so suspension could go back together in the replacement lower wishbone along with the driveshaft & wheel hub assmebly.

On removal of old drive shaft, barely any oil leaked out, so this WAS low as well & was giving the horrible grinding i had been hearing, & not the wheel bearing.

The wheel bearing did actually need replacing as well.

2nd hand driveshaft & wheelhub all from a mk2.5 turned up, the hub had a good bearing in it, so this has all been assembled along with a top up of LSD oil & away we went.

To be on the safe side having had both sides of the rear end of car done along with a track rod end on the front done, the car went for a full 4 wheel alignment.

Result now being that the steering wheel is central, grinding noise gone & it really now does run on rails

Have also fitted a mesh grille to save the radiator any more beatings, 1 fog light was just a shell, so this has been replaced, rubber seals on the hardtop that fix at the back of the car have been replaced due to being really tatty, only thing left to do to bring the car to tip top condition is to fit the replacement passenger headlamp unit, and next year, get the proper eibach mx5 suspension fitted( this will set me back around £500, but its not a must do now item).

So for £2600 purchased & a total of £600 on all the parts including headlight to be fitted, the car was an absolute steal & is absolutely shed loads more fun to drive that they Yeti.

Wont this be marring/scratching the paintwork though Dave?

the paintwork is knackered on every panel... thats why it was cheap, no rust, and mostly good mechanical, and newish roof, but every panel is buggered... it will be the last job to be done.... 2 new wings (bolt on) reshaping of rear arches, smoothing the welding on the sills, then either repainting or wrapping... (I have a nice new bumper , freshly painted hanging around in the house!) but I'm not putting it on until all the rest is done, so it stays (as new) , it was a bargin at £40. so for now, the heavy waterproof cover is perfect! the passenger window doesn't seal very well as there is no cable attached (snapped) it need a new mech, .... and...

Have you managed to work out where the water was getting in - it's usually the foam seals around the rear lights or, vary rarely under the chrome plates where the mushroom bolts are for the hard top.

I havent really checked out the chrome plates for the hardtop, but it seemed as simple as coming through the rubber seal along the top of the boot... the boot was changed from a ducktail one to a standard one when I bought the car.... I may have to check its alignment, make sure its fitted correctly. there is no rust in the boot, so I want to keep it that way! lol...

wow! that is some major surgery! lol.... how many miles have you done? I'm kinda lucky mine is only on 82,000 km.... not many miles! (55k?! ish?) the only noises I have is from the exhaust ... the (common I believe?) heatsheild it sounds like... rattly depending on gear revs ect ....

next job is a new clutch, and when thats happening I'm going to replace the gearbox oil, and have the new gear lever seals fitted, at the same time i will have the VLSD oil changed, as a precaution!

I agree its SO much fun to drive, my vRS is simply too fast for the road, thats why i do the track days in it... I have just been driving the MX5 for the last 2 days! lol.... such a perfectly balanced car!

once you get the suspension done its should really rock! :) feel free to post a review on this thread, I like the input :)

Purchased with 80k miles on it, we have only out around 600 since purchase.

Jut be aware that any loud grindng noise that might seem like bearings, might just be the lsd needing top up.

I can recommend koni adjustable as a good replacement. They only adjust on the rebound but with stock springs are a great street set up. I had mine supplied by Phil at performance5 and fitted by Paul Roddison and have been really pleased with it over the last few years

bought "baby phantom" a Christmas prezzie... she hasn't moved in weeks, weather not good enough, but she will be pleased with this... after much research, and patience, some people say the cheap clutches will fail, and are circa £70, but there are better quality ones, but I simply didn't want to pay, and a performance clutch is unessesary as I wont be upping the power, sooooo...

IMG_2318.jpg

from her "homeland" of Japan, an original quality "exedy" clutch, brand new, never fitted (with realease bearing and pressure plate) bought from a guy on facebook (MX5 parts page) for £60 delivered. :) bargin! these are usually circa £100!!
