Have Skoda been known to under estimate performance?

Featured Replies

I only ask as my OC3 VRS TSI DSG feels a lot quicker than it should or even compared to official stats.

To put this in perspective, I've had 2 x mk5 GTI's, one of which was an ED30 mapped to just over 280bhp and my last car prior the VRS was a Clio RS Turbo mapped to 260bhp and the VRS feels as quick as both if not quicker in the mid range.

I don't have loads of spec on my VRS so it is nice and light, just keen to understand if Skoda put more power in than stats suggest?

Not that I'm complaining of course as loving the car!

Not Skoda in particular, but I think VAG in general are conservative. Or at least, realistic (not fuel economy though!).

To be fare to them their quoting the figures EU legislation makes them quote....

I'm not complaining.

There are some 0-62 tests on Youtube and they seem to easily hit or beat the book values. I remember a particular roundabout on my test drive and nailing the accelerator in third and thinking yesss this is just brilliant. Think its a big step up from the MkII.

I've seen some of the tests on your tube and might do some timed runs myself as my VRS has some serious urgency that goes beyond the 220bhp it should have under the bonnet, again, not that I'm complaining as it makes for very easy progress,..

The torque figures for the tsi engine are impressive which could make it feel faster than you'd expect?  looking at the golf mk6 its up by 70nm and 150nm from the mk5 gti engines  / edit oops mis-read the mk5 performance figures wrong engine!

I tested the max speed of my O3 2.0 tdi 105 kw (143bhp) on a long, flat, wide and empty highway.

The GPS said 216 kph, maxidot claimed 220 kph while the official figures says 218 kph... and there was still few hundreds rpm's left to the red zone. I would say VAG is fairly conservative.

My prior cars mentioned in the OP, whilst mapped for BHP, were also mapped for torque so I know what to expect after experiencing cars with decent torque levels and power.

Perhaps it's just me, however the car pulls better than it should for 220bhp and 258flbt,...

It feels about right to me. It is definitely not as fast as a similarly powered Subaru I have owned, but the Octy does have a 100kg weight disadvantage and has longer gearing holding it back. The mid-range torque and DSG (for those who have it) help the Octy just about keep pace, and with the turbo spinning up so early there is less need to change gears to maintain decent oomph..

Yes, VAG do not show genuine Performance with Skodas,

they need to have poorer performance figures and economy than a VW or Audi that costs more

that may be the same or worse, a bit heavier.

Aww come on they always are conservative to the car you currently own lol

Just accept the figures as the are probably about right. If the power etc of the octavia is higher then id assume the golf and Leon is too but maybe they just made the skoda more powerful ;)

The octy is a quick car but it isn't some conspiracy car I reckon

Or simply that it is a new car, everything is working right up to spec and nothing is worn.

I dont know really. From experience can say the new 2.0 TDi 150 engine is way better in terms of overall power delivery than the v late previous gen CR 170 I came from in my MK2; its also so much lighter as a car that its every bit as fast despite its power and torque deficit.

I wouldnt be surprised if the power figures were slightly underestimated but then every rolling road varies so its difficult to tell....still having a boring looking Elegance that would show a standard Mk2 vRS TDI CR up is quite a nice thing to have.

It was certainly a bit quicker than an Astra van 1.9 CDTi 150 Sportive that looked modded yesterday; not bad given my car is utterly standard and was loaded with luggage and people at the time...i've had a few Astra 150 CDTi's in the past and I remember them being bloody quick standard so good enough for me.

Early 0 to 60 times i read for 2.0tdi 150, were 8.2sec, everything now says 8.5. I mean, ok in reality to almost everyone in everday driving, whats 0.3 seconds, but it does seem that something has changed. i'll have to get the missus to come with me with a stopwatch :P
