Load space cover - odd

Featured Replies

I've had this a couple of times now, so it's not just a one off - I've pulled the loadspace cover over the boot after putting something in the car. Then later, a while after driving off (but still driving) I've heard a thump from the back of the car, and opened the boot to find the cover has fallen down into the boot.

Has anyone else had this, or any suggestions as to how or why it's happening?

SWMBO has had this a few times, only happens on one side. Once you've been driving for a while theres a thump in the boot and the tonneau cover is in a right old mess.

I've tried pulling it up and allsorts but it makes no difference. the cover still falls down every now and then.

Are you driving with the windows open? Mine has jumped up the once when I was driving with all four open. I've just put it down to the air pressure pushing it out.

No, all windows shut. In fact I don't think I've ever opened the windows since buying it!

It has generally been when it's warm and sunny though (well as warm and sunny as you get in March!).

I guess this is do it with the one touch release. A bump in the road could jolt it enough to think its a tap and open lol

My old mk2 estate would do this. You would get a click first as it part unlocked its self then if you hit the next pot hole it fully unlocked and shoot back into its cassette. First time it did this nearly gave me a hart atack.

This ony happened when empty? Loaded up no proplems.

My mk3 elegance 1.6 tdi no proplems.

It didn't shoot back into the cassette, it dropped down into the boot.

That's what mine has done, seems the drivers side let's go which causes it to retract just on that side then fall into the boot

Ah that makes more sense, will have a fiddle with it tomorrow, and see if it's locking in place properly.

You need to have it pulled up at a good 45 degrees and you get a proper loud clunk that it's locked properly in place.

I was a bit mystified at first when the pegs woudn't stay in the side grooves during opening the cover, and  also had a couple of "phantom" openings. Found above all I needed to open the cover by just pressing down on the handle and then letting it open at its own speed. If I tried to hurry it, pegs came out of guides and that was also when it auto-opened later. (I think  )

is this a feature ? :giggle:

Another mk3 cost cutting exercise.....the mk2's had a locking mechanism on them that kept the cover in the closed position you only had to pull it until it locked in place with the sound of the mechanism engaging.

Mk3 you physically have to lift the cover handle up by a good margin to lock it into place. Bit carp by comparison but suppose it is something less to go wrong, the locking system on the mk2 had been known to break on occasion.

i don't have to pull mine up? Just pull it back, same as the mkii

Me neither. It stays when I pull it back and never opens on it's own. I do always push it down to unlock and leave it to retract automatically.
