1.9TDi warm starting problem

Recommended Posts

1.9tdi Elegance Estate 2001 has started to be difficult starting when warm. The engine turns over easily enough. It feels as if there is no fuel being fed to the engine! I had thought it was the load sensor wire as I found this to be broken - since repaired but not effect on starting. If anyone has had this problem, I would be grateful for the solution.

many thanks.

Sounds like the coolant temp sensor! solved all sort's of niggly issues with my 1.9tdi pd100

I paid about a £5 for a non OE part (trade price) but they should be available for under a tenner!

Such a strange part :D

Thanks for the help everyone.

I have changed the coolant temp sensor and still getting same problem. Engine wont start when beginning to warm up. Starts fine when cold!

What is the ASV which Green Briskodian suggests may be stuck shut?

Many thanks

did you get this sorted ? maybe daft question but when were the glow plugs last changed ?

Would it need the Glow plugs though to start the car when the engine is hot? Surly he would have bigger problems when starting from cold.

if the ASV gets stuck the engine spins over with no compression, so goes really fast on the starter. Sounds like you need someone with vcds to plug in and make sure first the temps read correctly and then see what the cranking rpm is, as a worn starter will not quite spin it fast enough to catch when warm (it is possible to work around this with MPPS and tweaking the map tho).

What is the battery like? IIRC the ecu chucks fuel straight away from cold but when warm the engine has to be turning over at 250rpm or more before fuel injection starts.

Hi guys, Thanks for all the good advice. Problem still not solved!

Starter motor ok I have even tried starting from warm with a mains cranker/charger. Engine turns quickly but not starting. I have changed the temp sensor. The EGR solenoid seems to be working in that it opens fully after 3 seconds after switching off. It does not get stuck as I have checked with the air pipe off. Could the MAF sensor cause the engine not to start when warm?

many thanks

A couple of years back I had an intermittent problem with starting when warm. Like your symptoms the engine would just turn for a while before firing. The problem turned out to be a faulty cam sensor. They're easy and cheap enough to replace. Plus it's come up on your VCDS log.

Guys,

Again many thanks for replying to my last posting, it's much appreciated.

Last night I re-ran VCDS having checked the relays under the dash, all fuses and re plugged all the connectors in the engine compartment and inside.

I was suprised to find that the engine faults had cleared! Only the EPS remains a problem. Life is not that simple is it! Ran the engine up to running temperature, switched off and found that it did not want to start until the 3rd attempt.

The CTS & MAF sensors were connected as were all the sensors when I re-ran the diagnostics.

I have read that the steering angle sensor can play havoc with the electrics if it is faulty. I think I will replace this sensor as it is still showing up as a fault.

I was wondering if VW/Skoda got Microsoft to write the coding for the ECU & installed some version of windows, If so it would answer why we have these problems!

Problem finally solved! I have replaced the following:

  1. Relays
  2. Starter motor
  3. Camshaft sensor
  4. Speed sensor
  5. Coolant Temp sensor
  6. Battery
  7. Power steering pump
  8. Steering Angle sensor

I discovered the replacement camshaft sensor was faulty. Car now running like it should.

Thanks everyone for all their advice and help, much appreciated.

Bloody hell, that's quite a journey to discover that a new, replacement part is on ther fritz. :o

Is it certain that it is/was the sensor? Wiring in the car is 12+ years old now. And the 1.9TDI isn't the smoothest of 4 potters.

Glad to read it's now behaving more reasonably. :)
