Featured Replies

Ok guy's lets have it then!!

Whats do you all think is the best AV software on the market. I'm kinda blinkered into Norton at the moment.

Don't need firewall just decent AV.

I like Norton

It's easy to use - that's why I'm considering something else!!

It's to easy to get blinkered into the same old thing.

FWIW Norton has many known incompatibilities with other software around that you are likely to have loaded, and it doesn't fare that well on it's Antivirus raison d'etre, nor does MacaFee(sp) either.

Freebies of either AVG or Avast! tend to be the winners for a lot of folks, although Panda and Sophos (payware) have merits.

It kinda depends on what you think of the various reviews (not excluding cost considerations as against freebies), and what "sits well" with other things, compatability-wise.

As ever, set a restore or goback before you change. Also, you cannot run two software ones at the same time, so you have to delete existing before installing new one and of course close all open programs.

Just my 2 cents - I'm sure others will post. There have been a couple of threads on this but it never hurts to get the newest views, so I'm sure many will view this thread.

I would say the best freebie one is AVG, i run it myself and it never misses a beat, but if you want to pay then try F-Secure :)

If you want a free antivirus proggy, then Avast Home Edition is the one to have....way better than AVG. If your prepared to put your hand in your pocket and pay for one, then I can recommend NOD32. It is very easy to set up, very powerful and very quick to scan.

Before I had Nod, I had Panda Titainium, and prior to that AVG and Norton. Norton was too heavy and crap detection, AVG had crap detection, Panda was good, but missed a few but NOD32 hasnt missed a thing. I have it on my desktop here now, as well as my daughters laptops.

Beofre you instal any new AV software, make sure to fully uninstall Norton as it is well known to be a git to be fully rid of it.

I don't mind paying if it's reasonable

I use PC-cillin for both personal firewall and AV. Works well for me.

:agree: Google groups or dedicated forums offer help for this. There has to be a very good reason for sticking with (and paying for) Norton and I'm blowed if I know what it is. Worth a bit of time uninstalling completely IMO unless you are updating with them.

We run Symantec Antivirus at work and it seems to do the job :D

I have AVG at the mo - what're the advantages with Avast?

A much better search engine and scanner. I base this on my own use/testing to find a decent AV.

I always found AVG missed threats or troublespots.

I might just investigate that then. Ta. :)

Agree re Avast! - plus automatically updates itself in the background, rather than being potentially out of date from the time when last manually updated, as is AVG.

Well just to add another bonus + for AVG since they completly redone the programe Jan {all other versions are obsolete} it updates daily automaticaly and has never missed a single thing {I have tested it out on some dodgy sites too} so I would give it a plus no problems here for me.

payable software - NOD32 - one of the best AV software

free software - Avast Home edition

free firewall - Kerio Personal firewall

At company we use Symantec but is too slowly and consumpt too much performance. I use Avast with Kerio at home computer and I'm satisfied

Px.

Another thing with Kerio, I stuck to a very old version. It's so streamlined that the install fits on a floppy :D Very simple, works at low level and does exactly what it says on the tin without grinding your system to a halt.

But I'm veering off topic here - only wanted to know about AV. I've been using AVG for the last 18 months, but my subscription will soon run out so may look into other AV :)

I also have had no problems with Avast, found it to be much 'nicer' to use than AVG (though haven't used AVG this year). Have also read very good reviews about NOD32.

New AVG is fit and forget......works very well and in the background ...updates every day if needed and its free

Sounds promising then. I'll have a look at that.
