Surging/ fluctuating revs - V-power Nitro?

Featured Replies

Hi, just wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar. Over the last month or so I've noticed that when cruising under partial throttle or when accelerating from cold I'm getting a very slight surging sensation almost like a misfire. The rev counter also fluctuates very slightly by about 10rpm up and down.

Originally thought it was due to sparks needing changing but since they were done at service at end of feb its continued. The car drives fine otherwise and no issues if I'm a bit more aggressive with the throttle or pushing on.

I always fill the car with V-power Nitro + and starting to wonder if its this causing the problem as thinking about it my Smart has a similar characteristic though not as noticeable, just put this down to being a 3 cylinder and the turbo boosting quite low in rev range.

Any help/ advice gratefully received

David

What Age and Mileage is you car, & what car is it ,  the 1.2 TSI DSG ?

Maybe try Tesco Momentum 99 instead.

What mileage/service was it they changed the spark plugs at

& what plugs are fitted ?

Has the Air Filter been checked or changed?

Its just over 3 and half years old 2010 plate. Yeah its the 1.2 TSI DSG. 38,000 miles.

Last service was done begining of Feb this year at 37,000 miles had sparks and air filter changed during that service they basically did the main 40,000 mile service at that point. Not sure what plugs main dealer did the service, I had noticed the issue leading upto the service but only when cold and just though it was sparks deteriorating but seems to be happening most journeys now.

Unfortunately haven't got a Tesco with 99 nearby thinking of trying Esso 97 as its not too far away and see if its the same after a couple of tanks.

ive said it before and ill say it again, the only time my car has misfired was when i used nitro

as George suggests, try something else but try a few tankful's just to make sure

Your 1.2 tsi is not recommended as needing Super Unleaded anyway, so maybe just be sure of using good fuel from a good source.

Just because the Station has a big Shell sign, that is not guaranteed.

Interesting I never had an issue on the old Vpower but have been doing a lot less mileage since Nitro was launched last april probably gone from 300 miles a week to about 60 mile a week at most which may be why I've not noticed until recently, also run the smart on the same. They both still get a good run when they are used don't do journeys of less than 10 miles so oil should be warm.

Think I'll run this tank right down and try Esso for a few fills see if its the same. Fuel economy has dropped several MPG since Nitro replaced the old V-power on both cars.

Yeah I know could probably use lower RON without issue but normally find it pays for itself with few mpg more.

Nitro is a complete rip off compared to Momentum 99 I think. I'd sooner use Esso Supreme. I guess they got to pay for their marketing campaign and Ferrari sponsorship somehow though. Oh and all those stupid flags on the forecourts.

Looks like esso will be getting my money for a bit then lol, will be interesting to see if it solves the issue

Look at the air filter yourself incase it has got damp.

& if you can remove and check your own Spark Plugs.

But also use a different filling station.

Nitro is what it is, and Shell additives like Sodium is what we know it is, Common Salt, a Cleaning agent.

Mine runs like a peach on Nitro+

I am sure Momentum is also good, but wouldn't pick anything else.

And between the two Nitro+ and Momentum I would trust Neither Shell nor Momentum to be above profiteering etc, but maybe naively prefer to buy my fuel from a company known for fuel not horse burgers

Big love, Sparkly x

I admire Tesco's transparency as they have committed to Momentum99 being 5p/litre more than their regularly unleaded. I stopped at Fleet services on the M3 a week or so ago, a Shell forecourt where regular diesel was £1.499 per litre. V-Power unleaded was £1.5- something and the diesel variant was hitting the £1.60 mark. Eye watering prices and the government concluded that fuel pricing was fair?

Interestingly the service station forecourts don't seem to show on petrolprices.com. This one doesn't anyway.

After two and a half years of V-Power I've tried Momentum - I'm not sure if I'm going to continue as the Tesco contamination scandal pretty much put me off supermarket fuel - plus the Shell station is more convenient for me.

I think Momentum 99 smells richer than standard unleaded. It has a stronger whiff to it.

I think you're supposed to put it in your car, not inhale it ;) - a guy got banned from all filling stations for inhaling petrol fumes.

It's well known that you get more horsepower with Tesco fuel, well that's what it said on their boxes of burgers anyway !!!!!! :giggle:

George?

George?

That's why he had to change his name to gonephising or should it have been 'gonesniffing'!

Shell Killed Engines in the past with New Super Fuels,

lots of Police cars and the likes,

& Tesco sold bad fuel as is well documented.

As have all suppliers.

*1986 Formula Shell, *

what were all those scentists at back then, sniffing fumes?

*Risk of Backfire with Royal Dutch Shell V Power Nitro +,

thats just internet stuff, no truth in that, anti Oil Companies.*

I know which is easier to get Compensation from if a tank is contaminated.

& Shell is a Company with Owners of Franchised Filling Stations,

Errors can happen at any forecourt or Tanker refill.

Supermarket, Private Owned or Huge Multi National Owned and run.

Its just some seem to have it happen more than others,

& at times of shortages buyers of Super unleaded have found out because their cars are mapped to use 98/99 ron, that the refill has put something else in their tank.

Its all supposed to be 99 ron minimum with the 2 that advertise as such

Others can be what ever 97, 98 or 99.

Definitely gone sniffing :)

funny, I got the same reading original OP post. I too have recently moved to V-nitro from Esso ( no tesco where on my path)

Initially, I thought it was because I had vented, so there was too much slushing around, then it felt that the tanker may have mistakenly swapped fuels. I was actually going to complain to shell that fuel from one station gave me a bigee oopmh compared to same fuel from another location, meaning some fuel play by franchisee.

However I am not sure if it is the fuel itself. I am going to try it twice more...one from the reputable garage, the other from the dodgy one and see if I get the difference. Willa slo bear in mind oil temp, drive conditions, and temp to see if that made a difference either.

If I feel uncomfortable, I'll move back to Esso.

It is strange haven't really driven the car this week to notice it just looking forward to getting rid of this tank so can try a different fuel and see what happens. sometimes feels like the dsg is going to change gear but changes its mind e.g. to go from 5th to 6th but decides mid way through change that 5th is still needed but even more convinced having seen other comments on nitro its that causing the problem.

Wish Shell would go back to the old formula never had any issues with that wonder if they have stuffed if full of bio ethanol?

I read somewhere that Esso Supreme 97 is the only one now that doesn't contain ethanol? Or at least didn't at the time of writing. Strange that Esso and BP don't keep up with Shell and Tesco on octane rating minimums, maybe Esso don't feel they don't need to for some reason? As for BP wouldn't touch the stuff, always seems way overpriced.

Right finally ran the tank down to nearer empty (70 miles left) to try Esso Supreme. Will monitor and see if there are any differences regarding running and revs, also keep a log of fuel economy so will see if that's any better. Least I got Tesco club card points from the local Esso.

Esso (aka Exxon/Mobil), Shell and BP are petrol companies, Tesco isn't.

From where does Tesco get its petrol?

From Greenergy.   Biggest Fuel Distributor in Scotland and big in Roadfuels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenergy

http://www.tescopfs.com/our-fuel/specifications

& the others are big Oil & Gas Companies and some have Refineries,

& fuel can be sourced from many locations and refineries around the world and brought into the UK to Ports and Depots.

Supermarkets need to buy from Refiners just like various other Retailers need to,
