Bikers near miss on Cat & Fiddle

Featured Replies

I learned early on "don't brake, lean more". More chance of making the corner by leaning than braking.

No question, a gentle nudge on the left bar would have saved that one, but the natural reaction if you think you're over-cooking the corner is to sit up and scrub of speed even if it's absolutely the wrong thing to do.

I've been riding for (oh heck) over 30 years now, and I think there's a real chance that I'd have done the same thing in the same circumstances despite knowing full well that leaning further would get me out of it.

  • It's the innocent motorist I feel sorry for, they're driving along minding their own business when suddenly an idiot nearly smears himself over his windscreen. It's people like the biker who give all

My only response to the video is What a monumental c***end.

Is it any wonder with "richards" like that, that the Police are up there nearly every weekend with a speed unit.

But it doesn't explain why he thought it was ok to cross the double whites on the corners prior to the come off. I can honestly say I've never crossed double white lines like that in my life. I still hope he's prosecuted.

On a police driving course a few years ago, the instructor was talking about a lengthy section of double white lines that had recently been installed in the local area. He was quite keen to point out that it was the council that decided what the road makings should be, and they didn't take the advice of the police into account.once they are there however, the police have a duty to police them.

The key focus of the council is to minimise the risk of accidents, so they can put in double whites to protect the few even if it would be perfectly safe for some vehicles to use all of the road.

In this case, whilst crossing the white line was clearly an offense, from what I saw on the video, the rider had a clear enough view of the road ahead that crossing it was not an unsafe maneuver.

He still cocked up the last bend though :-(

Fair point, well made.

IMHO he got what he deserved and should count himself lucky that he walked away. Whether or not he gets points is a different matter.

I pity the driver of the car that he almost ran into - brown trouser moment for him as well. Had a similar scary experience a few years back on a back road - driving  within the speed limit on a straight section of road with sweeping S bend ahead. I see an artic coming up to the bend from the other direction doing a fair speed, he reaches the first bend, cuts the corner to keep his speed up, takes the second bend with the cab on his side of the road - what he seemed to forget is that the trailer (must have been empty) couldn't follow the cab at that speed ( I would guess it was 50-60mph) and proceeded to slide onto my lane in front of me with the rear tyres hitting the verge on my side of the road. With a combination of good luck, dry road and ABS working at its limit, I managed to slow just enough that the trailer pulled back in within 10m of my bonnet. Needless to say, SWMBO and me both needed a few minutes to recover afterwards - I did still have clean underwear but not sure how.

Irrespective of the speed limit, he was travelling too quick for the road conditions and his skill level. If you can't properly control the vehicle at a selected speed on a selected road, don't drive that speed on that road.

Could have made some money on Youtube with a video of that^

I do agree with you on the solid white line business, yes. I always shake my head at people that cross them purely because of impatience.

and in another failure for Darwinism: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-26873158

This defies explanation - they cross it once just as the barriers drop and then go back across it again a few seconds later. Lucky for them it appears to have been a slow moving train - if that had been an express it would have been Darwin 4 dumb driver 0

Rider in front of him seemed more aware or at least concerned by the road conditions. Surface seemed to deteriorate and there was dampness and water about on parts of it. Maybe that's why the bloke in front grew more cautious (seemed to , to me anyway).

Debate about whether he'd have made the corner or not, maybe he would have. However, if he'd had the slightest wobble or high sided it, he'd have been in the air with a flying bike behind him, heading across the road towards the car.

I think he just got the bit between his teeth for a few moments. Passed a couple of other bikers and was revelling and not concentrating enough on his own speed and the road conditions.

Probably right there! It's easy done isn't it, only have to take your eye off the ball for a second, n something like that happens

Just spotted that he has been convicted of dangerous driving, still to be sentenced. Farmer is after £1000 for repairs to the fence.

Claimed he was in full control and just hit the fence to avoid the car.

I got done yesterday, pulled on the motorway for speeding, im normally a pretty sound driver and have always had a clean licence, in a minute of stupidity and madness i got a bit silly, i was about to pull in and resume echonomical driving when the bmw behind me was unmarked showed me the blue lights and pulled me.

When asked where id been i said to see a customer, apparently im not insured for thus so they have me on speeding and driving with out insurance, insurance upgrqded on the side of the road and she let me on my way with out taking me car off me.

I would never have known about business use, dont know why but i guess ive overlooked it

But there you go, drive like a complete ****er and this is what happens, now i have to accept responsibilty and punishment which i deserve i hope the court can reduce my ban as being self employed i need my car or im screwed (should have thought of that before you broke the law i hear you say). Everything happens for a reason i guess, now i have to be an even safer driver.

Better get my musses some driving lessons !

He might of been in full control, but the way he was riding before the collision, it was only a matter of time until he lost control.

Being in control isnt having to avoid a car on its own side of the road. If he was in control, he'd of been able to stay on the left.

One of the reasons helmet cams can come back to bite you

Urgh. Sorry to hear it.

Hope everything goes well and they dont go hard on ya.

Its obvious you didnt know you needed it, or youd of thought of any other reason you were driving, which isnt for business purposes.

If I had said id been to see a friend it wouldnt have been an issue, its pretty crazy but thats insurance companies for you, I now know this and am wiser to consider  my insurance in the future, must be more carefull!

as for the speeding, well ive let my self down and my family and im feeling pretty humbled. This might be the kick up the arse I need to refocus my ife in general as  I have gone off the rails a bit.

Youve not done anything more than what alot of people do on a daily basis though.

When you say speeding? In excess of 100?

Im shamefully going to admit she followed me doing 110 albeit it was ony for 10 seconds or so, it is what it is. I fully expect a minumum of one month ban but I will attend

I normally cruise at 80ish and 65 when i just want to be echonomical and chill

Dont get yourself down too much.

Its not the crime of the century. Its not even dangerous on a motorway IMO and most bigger cars would have no problem at all maintaining this speed all day.

I think most car drivers are guilty of speeding occasionally. I defo am, and much worse than what youve just done.

Its just a bugger when they catch ya!

Exactly most of us have been over the limit before, I for one am worse at times!

Best of luck with all of the proceedings!

Yeah exactly mate.

I just suppose it gets very real when you get caught :(

Full control, my  :moon:

So in other words he intentionally put his bike on the wrong side of the road and into the path of an oncoming car? An even bigger :swear: than we first thought.

There but for the grace of God go most of us (me in particular).

It's the ultimate victimless crime but in this country we seem to get a bit het up about it. Probably those b****y Liberals at it again. You seem to get less of a sentence for causing grievous bodily harm! I think we have our priorities wrong in this country - the lunatics are now running the asylum and we all seem to have let them!

That farmer has a sense of humour. £1k for a wall.  Good on him/her.

Its not even a wall, its a fence lol.

Tbf though, he'll get cars n bikes through his walls n fences every other week on that road. Theres always some clown that misjudges the corner, road conditions, their ability or the car/bikes grip levels
