Think I may have found the problem

Featured Replies

Last couple of weeks the handling on my car has been very wishy washy even though I have had 4 new tyres and tracking done.

However today I put the wheels on full lock and found this... could this be the problem?

Can anyone provide a link on car parts 4 less for the relevant part I need to sort asap please.

Cheers guys

Apart from being dirty/rusty there is nowt you can tell by looking at that is wrong with it.

Jack the car up, grab hold of the wheel at quarter too and quarter past positions and rock it back and too and see if there is play in the track rod end :)

Im just shocked that i have 4 new tyres and had them balanced and tracked.. and it feels worse i.e. more wallowy than before

Surely if they tracked the car, they would check to see is anything was loose?

Have you checked tyre pressures?

Have you had the same size/make of tyre fitted as was on it before?

Different make but new... For example if im going about 50mph.. and I move the steering wheel from side to side slightly , rather than the car weave in and out slightly, it sort of feels like the weight of the car is being thrown around (almost jumpy) and doesn't feel very safe...

Apologies about my description but its my best way to describe it :)

In that pic.. I was convinced there should be a flush fitting on the arms... it looks like its at an angle and loose

Ditto. Sometimes tyre fitters don't bother setting the pressures and just leave them rock hard. Have you checked them?

32-34 is the best psi isnt it?

34psi I find best on standard size tyres.

It could just be the different grip levels of the new tyres, from your description I would say you are now getting more tyre grip, hence the car feeling like its moving/rolling more.

ref the track rod end, they need to be able to move to allow for suspension/steering movement, there is a ball joint in the track rod end which allows this.

The one in your pic is on a slight angle due to the lazy fitter that set your tracking!

pet hate of mine tbh, it's just that he hasn't levelled it before tightening the lock nut.

won't affect the steering though, due to the balljoint in the track rod end :)

I had a tyre fitted on the front of mine and they left 60psi in it!

Checked this morning and 34psi all around. Bizarre. Having my track rod and wishbones/bushes checked on Saturday morning so will hopefully will get to the bottom of it.

Name the tyres, both the old and new. I would guess that the old ones had soft sidewalls, e.g. Rainsports, and the new ones are a lot tougher.

You can check your wishbone bushes just by putting the steering on full lock with the car parked and looking at the console bush in the same way as you did above, takes 30 secs per side. ARB bush/drop links could be worth a look but i'd suspect you'd hear something by now, not just have sloppy handling.

Before having the car tracked when driving the car felt a solid unit. Now when driving moderately quickly and braking the car feels very seperate to the wheels.. as if the body just floats around on top of the wheels. Feels awful and unsafe

Why are you being so evasive about the tyre types?

No offence but I think that is more of a budget tyre isn't it.

Bit of a false economy in my experience ( and that even includes Kumho's, the unbalanced wear was a nightmare when I had mine and vowed to think twice before buying again). Sounded like a bloody wheel bearing on the way out !

I don't have personal experience of them though, to be honest, just that they appear in the lower end of the results, and generally, you get what you pay for. Makes far more sense to spend another £20 a corner and at least get Falkens or Uniroyals.

What make did you have on before ?

im losing money on them but I have sold tyres back to him at a loss of course, and then bought uniroyals 2. Have them fitted saturday
