Could be the onset of sticky vanes in the turbo.  It got boot the car up a in hill in 2nd/3rd does that cause the limp to occur?

Normal causes are the vanes getting jammed (soot, or rust on the control ring side), vacuum issues such as worn vacuum tubing, n75, other sensor issues (map, maf).

Initially you could check to see if the actuator in the turbo moves freely, and after that you really need to get the fault codes read.

Welcome to Briskoda, id go with Mr Ames's advice - get a better feel for what brings it on, that will narrow down the cause list.

Id also get in the engine bay and check every hose, joint, cable etc.

I can't edit my initial post, but "It got boot the car up a in hill...." should read "If you boot the car up a in hill..."

Many miles as the car done & what service schedule (fixed/variable)?  Might be as simple as  really dirty air filter, but I doubt it!

car has done 146k miles airfilter is cleanish,is it possble a service could sort this ?

well, when was the last service done, miles and time ago? if its coming close to due, it certainly cant make it worse...

Could be a fuel filter clogging too - also a service jobby...

How ever symptoms do suggest stick vanes.  Try my initial test for smooth actuator movement one the turbo first.

Definitely sticky vanes throwing the car into limp mode. I'd check the EGR valve also and look for wet tarry deposits exiting the side of the valve. The system needs a good clean including the manifold. Have it professionally checked over and the valve and manifold cleaned and the gasket changed. Check the turbo pipes, actuator, spindles for wear and the turbo seals. I'd be mindful that worst case a jammed vane could end in disaster with a snapped spindle - so don't go OTT with driving it at too higher RPM...
