Recommend some tyres

Featured Replies

I've recently noticed my front tyre has an egg, so need to be looking to purchase new front tyres shortly.  What do people recommend and why??

It's for a 2011 Octavia VRS 2.0TDI

prepare yourself for many conflicting and opinionated answers. HTH :)

Everyone has their own opinions but that's why I need to know reasons why :)

Whatever tyres you end up buying you will be told that they are:

A. Brilliant

B. Crap

Goodyear efficient grip performance.

Why are these recommended?  What's your reasoning please?

If money is no object get any Michelin tyre.

I am using energy savers at the moment and I have never experienced a tyre that grips so well in the wet while also being really hard wearing. You might want to consider the pilot sport on the vRS.

Money is definitely a consideration.  I don't want budget but can't be breaking the bank either.

Good topic. Always like to read these.. Chris ^ on a vrs? Is the speed limits in this country different if you own a vrs? :/ not looking an argument just adding to the topic!/debate :)

You get what you pay for with anything, budget will keep you on the road, well maybe not sometimes! Or the other end of the range is the top makes like Michelin. I am in need of 4 new tyres and speaking to one of the tyre places they recommended a mid range tyre like a Prestivo considering I do about 7 to 8000 miles a year. That should be a good compromise.

Goodyear efficient grip performance.

+1.  Excellent wear (14 months so far and plenty left), extremely quiet, good in wet and excellent grip round Angelsey on a track day.

Avon ZV5's. Fantastic tyre for the price IMO. Had them on my previous car (Vectra B 2.5 GSi) and had no hesitation (in fact didn't even look for another choice) when buying a set all round for my VRS recently. Better than the Pirelli Rosso crap that was on there that's for sure.

+1 for the Ultrac Sessanta, very good grip wet and dry and alloy protector lip.

I can recommend GY As2's, they give great dry and wet performance, a little soft and the quickest to wear for me 7.5k. They give great confidence. Thumbs up from me. (225/45/17 Leon 150tdi)

I also rate Bridgestone RE050a, they gave equal performance in he dry as the above, if anything I preferred their feedback and felt I could push further. The downside is slightly less confidence in the wet over the GY's. However they lasted longer 9k, but were more expensive than the GY's by £10 a corner.

I have had two sets of 4 of each of the above.

I now run verdestein sessantas, bought due to low cost any many positive reviews. The dry performance is good not quite as sure footed as above, their wet performance is on par with the above two tyres. The wear looks to exceed the 11k barrier. In torrential rain like we've had recently they were simply supurb. At the time I paid £75 a corner. I would certainly buy their replacement model. Value for money vs performance is hard to beat.

The above three have been on the Leon.

The GY efficient grip I have used for last 6 years on 205/65/15 on an Octavia. They are a very good tyre and O would recommend them too. I cant give fair comment on the wear rate (approx 5k a set) however if used within normal application I would expect similar wear to other GY tyres. Feel is good wet and dry, the side wall gives a little but would not be an issue with your low profile fitment.

Just because a tyre is not marketed as a sports/high performance variant does not mean they are no good for your application. Tyre prices are up and down all the time so one tyre may be more appealing one week and another the next when you take in all factors such as price/performance/availability.

hopefully some good advice/knowledge/feedback for you.

Vredestein Ultrac Vorti on a vrs.

Tyres are all about personal choice but I've driven over 40,000 miles in vRS's on eagle f1 assy 1's and 2's, I didn't think a tyre could get any better for doing everything very well, but I can honestly say the vorti's are a better tyre in every aspect.

Have a look at tyrereviews.co.uk and see for yourself.

Falken FK453 for me, ran them on my Impreza STI, just not long put a full set on the wife's V5 Golf and it's what I'll put on my vrs when the time comes, only negative is the rim protection isn't the greatest

To the OP:

depends on your priorities, which in turn can depend of your driving style and your finances.  What is the relative importance to you of (among other things) each of the following features
- handling (wet / dry?)
- braking (wet / dry?)
- price
- wear rate
- noise
- comfort
- fuel economy

In my case, I will shortly be buying a set of Dunlop Sport BluResponse 195/65 R15 81H tyres from MyTyres, on the strength of the reviews here:

Dunno if they will be any good (I'm hoping) and haven't bought Dunlop tyres for decades.  However, as you might have noticed from the size, these are for a 4x4 diesel estate and will be summer tyres only, to temporarily replace an almost-new (and excellent) set of Continetal TS850 winter tyres.  I'm not looking for crisp handling - I've got a sports car for when I want to enjoy spirited driving.  My Octavia is my boring, sensible, everyday, all-weather load-carrying workhorse and I mainly want economy, silence, comfort and good wet braking.

HOWEVER your own priorities will almost certainly be very different, which was my main point.  You need to have a clear idea of what do you want to achieve.

Final comment: if you are only buying two new tyres, fit them on the back.

I had on mine Michellin Pilot Primacy, really good tyres, good points especially for wear. Now I'm using Goodyear F1 Asymetric 2 and I'm really , really happy with them.

Is grip better than F1 Assys?...Sidewall strength as good?, Have a great rim protector? Is wear rate better?

Happy for 2y with Conti SportContact 5.

Just got some Fulda Sport Control, which are Good Year Asymetric F1. Nice too and a little quieter and cheaper.

Just taken Dunlop sport off my scirocco, fronts were done but backs had almost 6mm on and the droning from them was terrible, will never entertain Dunlops again .
