BP Ultimate

Featured Replies

I know this has been covered a thousand times. However, I filled my diesel vRS up Friday for a little break with the wife. I say little as I only filled up £20, That's all I needed.

I picked the wrong pump up, I thought that it said ultimate diesel for 1.389ppl - bargain. I soon realised it was actually 1.439ppl. That was 8p more expensive than the normal bp diesel I use. Not a bargain.

So anyway, to cut a long story short - it actually makes a difference. To my car anyway.

The gauge read 145miles, It usually under reads by about 10% so that's no real surprise. I managed 178 miles before I thought I best top up again.

Now again that's no real surprise, but the MPG is actually staggering, especially the kind of driving I did. Maybe 100 miles motorway and dual carriageway sitting at a constant 6th gear at 2300 revs (I'll let you work that out), the other 78 was about town, darting between roundabouts.

I usually I get around 48 calculated MPG with an empty car, bar me and a kit bag. I don't hang about and usually make use of the right pedal whenever I can. With ultimate, fully loaded with the wife and stuff for a weekend away (boot full) I managed a calculated 58.22 MPG.

I'm going to do a test for a week and see what's what, but if this is the case, BP are going to be seeing me a lot more.

Anyone else experienced the same? I honestly never used the premium fuels as I thought it was cobblers.

Hmm interesting read this, might try it myself. I know the car feels better to drive with the ultimate fuel but wasn't sure if that was in my head. Never looked at actual figures.

Used momentum on my last 3 fill ups and averaging 34mpg rather than 30mpg (calculated from miles travelled and litres used) not sure if that actually means I'm saving over the increased cost.

Tried a tank in my superb and could tell no difference in performance. Plus mpg was down to what it usually is. Ive gone back to using just bp diesel and tell a difference in fuel economy. Because its better

Limited data like that has to be viewed with suspicion.  14 litres on top of whatever was left in the tank means that you still have 25-30% standard diesel in the mix.

I have found that Ultimate gives 1-2mpg better than standard.  This data is over 36,000 miles of brim-to-brim data:

How are you calculating it though? You said you filled with £20 of diesel (and guage showing 145miles left in tank) so the tank was not brimmed I am assuming?

The only proper way that you can calulate the MPG would be a brim to brim calculation, so I am not sure what method you have used to

get the 58 mpg figure? I think that the BP fuel is good but I cannot see it being 10mpg better.

Nice warm day with the wind behind you?

The missus is picking up the f/l VRS this weekend (sadly trading in the beloved S2000 for better small person accommodation) and we'll be Shell V power all the way.

Regardless of extra oomph, engine wear protection and the like, we've always made the difference in price up comfortably with better mpg, especially when going into Vtech/VVC territory. Been the same story with Golf GTI, Clio Trophy, S2000 etc etc etc

And yes, once you've run a chunk through, the ecu certainly makes the most and you get more zing.

I suspect the following may also apply to BP Ultimate.....

I have been running some tests over the past few weeks as I have had lots of motorway runs that gave me the opportunity to get some consistent long distance runs on cruise control trips of around 200-300 miles with the cruise set at 79mph. Obviously, you cannot be on cruise all the time but over the full journey it generally levels out.

Overall, there appears to be no difference between V-Power and Momentum 99 in terms of MPG, but the car will show a slight dip in mpg if running normal 95 octane - around 1.5 to 2 mpg.

I do feel that the engine responds a little better when using the 99 octane fuel, but it could well be just a perception.

Is it worth the extra for V-Power? Probably not, except the I think they have extra additives that help keep the fuel system cleaner that regular fuel. So perhaps 1 tank in 5 will help keep the fuel systems clean.

Is it worth sticking to a 99 octane fuel? Personally, I think so. Todays engine management systems can get the best spark they can from whatever fuel is used, so they will get a slightly better bang form the higher octane.

In terms of running costs? In reality, there is so little in it that it comes down to personal choice. I'll stick to the 99 octane fuels and slap some V-Power in when my employers are funding the trip.

Cheers

Recently i've switched over to 97/98 octane fuel and my car feels a whole lot better. I've also recently fitted Goodyear effecient grip perfomance tyres all round and on a 70 mile drive home yesterday along the M3 in light traffic, cruising between 65 and 75 Mph my car returned between 44 and 46.6 Mpg, I was quite astonished. I've got a few long runs coming up and am looking forward to doing a full tank test and seeing the results..

Here is my data from 23,000 miles in a DIESEL Octavia 2.0 CR vrs. Commute is 5 miles each way 5 days a week, barely used weekends.

1. Esso STD *One off, so probably a fluke

2. Shell vPower *I reckon it ranks high due to psychological factor of the price being linked to how I drive it over the tank

3. BP STD

4. Shell FuelSave

5. Asda STD

The only comparison I can draw from this is that BP beats Shell by ~1mpg. This is barely anything, and I'm not surprised. Diesel is just diesel. The only variation here is the additives put in by the companies. As I work in this line of business you can see I'm quite happy using and will continuing using the big brands for my own reasons.

I've tried all the various brands of unleaded and super unleaded and can't say I've noticed any difference in economy that I would saybis due to the fuel. I would challenge anyone saying they get 1-2mpg more. To be that accurate all variables would need to be exactly the same which I would say is impossible - traffic conditions, weather (wind, temp etc), driving in exactly the same manner (ie accelerating at the same points, same degree of throttle) . I await for everyone to tell me I'm wrong but just my opinion.

Mine allbeit a petrol deffo better on 99 momentum rather than standard fuels

Filled up yesterday with BP Ultimate and I had a bit of fun on the way back from work today and achieved more mpg than I normally would do when pressing the accelerator a little :) I am going to keep running it and see if what I saw today continues.

I think a Diesel engine responds better to pretty much any enhancement however small, so I'm going to keep trying. Filled up with bp standard yesterday. Managed 48.7mpg over my trip home.

I agree up to a point.  My 8 mile commute to work yields maxidot fuel consumption ranging between  48mpg and 72mpg depending on whether I hit the school buses queuing outside the local school but:

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/312222-bp-ultimate/?p=3735439

That data is an Octavia diesel over 3yrs and 36000 miles not over 20 quids worth.  The values are pretty much the same but one number that stands out is the 52.4 average over 3253 miles for BP Ultimate - 0.8mpg above the next highest.

One thing that data cannot show is how much using premium fuels improved the overall consumption by keeping the engine cleaner.

So anyway, I'm liking BP ultimate. All £40 I've put in my car so far.

All my vehicles run much better on Ultimate. Every time I tried monentum with the SLK it developed a hickup a few seconds after a cold start.

Don't forget the air temp makes a huge difference to diesel mpg. Mine has improved about 10% in recent weeks due to the higher temps.

Filled up with some more today. I like it, placebo or not.

I use the BP Ultimate diesel on my VRS 170PD and haven't monitored the mpg, but the acceleration is definitely much better.  I would notice it more if I go back to the standard supermarket diesel.

The extra cetane in the Ultimate Diesel is noticeable (maybe not the first time it's filled up straight off), but you do notice it the next couple of runs.  You will notice it even more when you fill up again with the supermarket one - acceleration is definitely slower and less response.  Not a placebo effect.

I've filled up with normal BP since my last post and filled up again with Ultimate. I don't really care what anyone says, I agree with you Fan Tsang, definitely 100% a different driving experience. Engine feels full of life!

Since buying the blackline have only checked on maxi dot mpg on longish runs, usually about 50ish mpg but have just completed a round trip Bristol /Newcastle and was very surprised to get 58mpg up and 60.5 on the way back ,steady driving with std Esso and have just turned 9500 mile, don't know about performance but economy wise very pleased, even if maxi dot might be a bit generous.

FWIW I pretty much exclusively put Shell V-Power unleaded in mine these days as it does seem to give the thing a bit more mid-range 'oomph'.

The Tesco 99 RON stuff seemed to help a bit in terms of MPG (and was cheaper) but didn't seem to improve much, if at all, in perceived responsiveness.

I'll probably stick with the V-Power for the time being as my local filling station is a Shell..
