Thanks for the link on the torch-just ordered a couple to use as a normal or detailing lights-at that price it would berude not to. After seeing your thread I got 2 cool white led floodlights on the wall and another 2 on stands I can move around or use for other purposes like decorating as there's not the fire risk associated with using halogens from the place above. They are either the best or worst lights I've come across for showing marks and swirls depending whether you want to find them or not!

Top recommendations-thanks.

No problem mate - anytime!

Glad the recommendation was well received :)

So Steve...How do these compare to Halogen ones?

Brighter and cheaper to run I assume. Also a better colour temperature.

Exactly, spot on. Different light sources pick up different defects. One light might make the paint look good, another light source will pick up defects such as marring, holograms etc.

Just out of curiosity, what colour of light is used in these swirl spotters, and by extension what is reckoned to be the best colour for the purpose?  I only ask because the most obvious most light i for spotting swirls I've seen is the car park lighing outside the local working mans club, followed by the streetlight outside my house.  Both are the very yellow oldschool street types.

they are also safer because they don't get hot. The only downside is they cost more to buy. As a rough guide the various sellers claim a 50w led is the equivelent of a 500w halogen for light output.

The best light colour I'm pretty sure is 4700k

Indeed - Solux bulbs for SunGun applications are 4500-4700K as I recall.

Having another play with some swirl finder torches at the weekend - some lightweight pocket size ones this time.

Aim is to compliment the sun gun, workshop lamps and permanent/fixed lighting in the detailing bay.

Some interesting results.... started with a sample of the Rupes LL150 LED torch.

Small, light weight and ideal for the job - but pricey in the £30+ bracket.

Then the Costco option; a bit more bulky - but a 2-pack for £24 was good value

and this is the brightest out of the three. 500Lumens from FEIT Electric

But the cheapest and bargain surprise is the little import from China

£1.62 with free delivery on Amazon. 300Lumens at this price is great!

Thought to share with you guys - it might be of interest

Those great little torches are now 7.99! Mine arrived last week and they're smart and are made of aluminium so should be very strong too.

Glad you managed to get one of these Ade; for the money (original price) they are very useful.

They dont seem to bad on battery usage either from what i have seen so far

Thought I would update this thread with a new LED torch which is getting some good reviews on other forums.

Branded either Elwis P90, or Sealey rebrand - this torch is pretty handy for general car maintenance and detailing.

Magnetic base makes it especially useful.

Prices vary dramatically.... but Amazon link attached for £7.48 delivered

Might be of use to some on here....

These arrived yesterday - quite impressed with them infact.

I've put one in both our cars - useful when working under the bonnet, detailing, etc.

I've ordered a few of these for my garage when we move next week. They seem quite bright so hopefully will help with waxing and polishing etc inside.

How did you get on with those torches Karl - they seem to have been popular!

I honestly can't believe how bright they are! For the price it's a great little tool. Impressed. Thanks for the heads up!

I was in Costco last weekend and spotted this; which looks ideal for some winter detailing work.

Very nice piece of kit the top section comes off and has an integral deck stand as well.

I'm asking around though - as reviews are minimal on the forums.

That looks a reasonable price with all that included.

I thought so - going on eBay for £110 delivered or thereabouts;

so potentially a bit of a bargain at Costco prices - but may be overkill.

I'll await some further reviews on it for now....

£110 is a tad steep. I'm getting another shelving unit shortly from wicks so will have a look in there to see if they have anything to offer!

Yes - I wouldn't pay that much for it; but for the £70 price point the Fixman unit is quality.

I've already binned the cheap ropey tripod version that was sub £40.

The frame and bolts started corroding after 12 months in the garage and tripod is easily buckled.

Better picture of the Fixman detachable mode below.... clearer to see.

Well worth £70 IMO. Detachable will come in handy and if it lasts then it's a win win for me!

BTW, I should also have said - Costco do a couple of great shelving units - which could be of interest to you.

Very sturdy and high quality - but not sure if the sizes would work in your new garage....

I'm not familiar with the Wick's one or the pricing; but if you let me know - I will gladly check on pricing when at Costco today.
