  • I saw that on the BBC site yesterday but forgot to post a link - like you, I was amazed how lightly he got off.The writer of that article should perhaps consult a dictionary regarding the use of 'epon

  • Loved my old leon cupra mk1, and my ibiza cupra mk4. Didn't like the newer leon until the latest 2014 model, love them! But I've got my mk2 octy vRS now and shall hopefully have it for many years :-)

  • Not quite sure how you got to that price. I've just priced a 5dr 280 DSG with EVERY option apart from custom paint and it works out at £32,370 list and £28,285 with discount.   Do the same with a Go

Very light sentencing IMO, but I would accept that. The journalist seems a muppet. I doubt if he knows if the car was as it left the factory....

EDIT,

The 'Ipswich Star' article has a quote.

from Inspector David Giles from Suffock Constabulary.

'He is a young driver, an inexperienced driver and he has a modified car i understand....

But police officers are trained to pursue,,,,etc  bla bla bla  (sure thing.)

Lives with his Disabled mother,

not a Motability car was it?  Named driver on Mums policy??

I test drove the new leon cupra and the ibiza cupra and in all honesty I preferred the ibiza. The 1.8 turbo engine in that ibiza is surprisingly quick. I found the leon a bit of a lump, still very quick and would out do the ibiza top end but the ibiza was more fun.

Didn't go with either cars at the end went with a fiesta ST lol

..

The writer of that article should perhaps consult a dictionary regarding the use of 'eponymous'.

I'm with you there, Brian.

And yes, he got off lightly.

Lightly is an understatement! Miss my cupra, with the remap though it was too much for UK roads. It was too fast to be safe fun as every corner was limited by the limit point not the grip / handling, other than on the motorway. I suspect mine would easily have passed the 155 marker as the map removed the limiter, not that I tried as max speed isn't that important, let alone relevant in the UK.

I'm looking to replace my Panda in the new year and the Leon Cupra is quite high in my shortlist. I like the Golf R but the 'nick-ability' of them worries me a bit, plus it sounds like the sort of car I could drive about it doing stupid speeds and not feel like I'm going very quickly nor that I'm anywhere near the cars limits. I'm thinking the Leon might offer a little more fun on the road without the need for going silly fast. As a bonus they're less likely to be nicked and I like the interior of them, but the Golf is better looking outside. It's hard to compare it to the Golf, it's quicker than a GTi but obviosuly missing the 4WD of the R.

I think in context, in the real world you'd have to be at silly speed to really benefit from the extra grip and traction of the golf, the leon was that good. Frankly both are license losers, but I agree the cupra is by far the greater Q car.

Whatever I get will be de-badged all round so hopefully it'd just look like every other Leon FR out there, aside from the extra exhaust.

Nah, still obvious that it's a Cupra to any decent petrolhead, lots of small details that give it away if you look closer. Also, you don't have to miss on AWD, the ST 300 comes with 4Drive now, if you're an estate guy.

Yeah I guess to anyone in the know will still spot it, they dont seem to be nicked as often though and I think it'd blend in a little more than the Golf with it's quad pipes etc. I'm not a fan of the ST to be honest.

There aren't as many decent petrol heads as there are BMW haters, so in the cupra you can carve your way through traffic without insults. Try doing that in a 3 series

A generic 3 series is nothing nearly as special as a Cupra though but If I wanted and (more importantly) could afford an M3 I could not care less what any idiot on the road would think about me or my car, don't know why would you.

Many drivers don't like being overtaken in a slow moving line of  traffic. A cupra is least offensive, ie rarely generates flashed lights or worse. A BMW more often than not results in flashed lights and middle fingers, or worse deliberately trying to close a gap your overtaking into. I couldn't give a toss what others think of my car, but I do care if that car invokes an unnecessary reaction in other drivers. That's the beauty of a stealthy q car, you can go about making good progress without antagonising other road users.

Well I haven't driven in the UK but in every other European country of the 6 that I have, going with the flow and sticking to driving rules and courtesy has never resulted in road rage situations just because of the brand I was driving! So for example, you're saying that if my slow lane happens to move faster than the fast lane in traffic and I am in a BMW all hell will break loose from others drivers? That sounds insane...

It does and it is insane, and it is how it can be in the UK.

It was Audi, BMW & Mercs but now that the supposed Prestige Jaguars which are just another rep mobile

on the list of 'special car's for special people who's trips are more important than anyone else just going with the flow.

Mostly Porsche drivers seem to take a chilled driving style, but there are now chavs in older SUV's that are up your jacksy specialists.

It's perfectly legal to overtake cars in a line of traffic, providing you don't cut them up by pulling in front too sharply. Sometimes you have to indicate to make sure the gap is kept big enough and avoid surprises. If you're driving a German car in the UK, it's not uncommon for the driver bring overtaken to deliberately shut that gap, it at least make it obvious he's unhappy. In a cupra that doesn't shout "look at me" then normally people give you space. Unfortunately, brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes etc have been adopted by those people that like to display their wealth or importance in society, so naturally normally adjusted people resent this.

This doesn't mean that every driver of these prestige brands has this type of personality, but most people with that type of personality will buy an expensive car and generally drive it in an arrogant or aggressive manner.

Sounds terrible to be honest. On the other hand, German premium brands are chosen by exactly that type of people you describe all over the world, it's not a UK thing. But that's different from being preoccupied against every single german car driver before he even tries anything unusual or arrogant, to say it's a common belief to expect such actions and act pro-actively by ie. not letting them merge to your lane is what surprises me.

It is obviously not every driver, but the funniest thing is overtaking one of these drivers of a prestige model, sometimes with not that much poke or sometimes even enough to pull the skin off a rice pudding, (sporty looks though) then see the reaction / road rage, tailgating & need for speed.

If you just let them pass again and be in front then there they carry on as they were before 'At the NSL, or just below' Road Captains again, perfect citizen adhering to the permitted maximum speed limit,

'Professional drivers who can not risk a any speeding points / job loss'.

I think the colloquial term is audiw****r. There is a reason why the UK TV ads for audi keep making the message that they are subtle and restrained.

The New RS 5 Coupe 'Nothing to prove'  advert makes me smile when i think of other adverts they do in other world regions,

and when i see a RS 5 Coupe getting a shift on then just held up with everyone else which is often.

Like the last RS5 the new one isn't much kop, it feels fat and lazy like AND it just shares the same roofline and backend as the Mondeo.

The RS7 on the other hand.  I'd consider selling some organs for one of those

I'm assuming the S5 is the latest model to get cheap lease dealers, there's 3 brand new ones in the local rail station car park alone.
