GRINDING METAL SOUND?

Featured Replies

I OWN A 2006 SKODA TDI. IT'S A 1.9 AND HAS DONE OVER 100K.

IT HAS BEEN MAKING A METAL GRINDING NOISE.I TOOK IT TO A GARAGE WHO FOUND

FRONT DISKS AND PADS WERE WORN OUT.THESE WERE REPLACED.

STILL HAVE THE GRINDING SOUND.

IT IS NOT THE DRIVE SHAFTS.

IS IT SUSPENSION LEGS? OR REAR AXLE?

BECOMES VERY NOISY WHILST TURNING AND WHILST DRIVING AT MODERATE SPEEDS.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Its not something as simple as a stone trapped between the brake disc & dirt shield is it?? i have had one trapped in the rear & then another in the front & it made a horrible noise whilst driving.

Sounds like either wheel bearings or cv joint, is the noise worse when cornering compared to travelling striaght?

WILL TAKE TO GARAGE ON MONDAY.

SOUNDS QUITE NASTY WHILE CORNERING.

IT MAY WILL BE C.V.JOINT OR BEARINGS.

Please take caps lock off. It's rude to shout

@Aspman

Maybe they're hard of hearing!

Sounds like it could be a bearing...just had mine done after many miles of "grinding". Originally thought it was tyres, (I think it was as it started about 12 months ago and did not get any worse..and bearing tend to go quite quickly once they have started....got it checked by local mech. but could not find anything wrong at the time. However, recently put a couple of new tyres on, and it is probably coincidence but I got a different noise...definately on the front RH side.....worse in a straight line and when going around right hand bends (put a heavier load on the left)...noise stopped when going around a left hand bend (load taken off bearing). Got it checked again, and confirmed definately a bearing. Cost about £90 for the bearing (have to replace the hub that contains the bearing)  + about £50 to fit....result an amazingly quite car....can't believe the difference. NB I have replaced all 4 tyres over the year, the last ones were all "winter" tyres, and they must have been quite a bit noisier than the standard ones I have fitted now.....

...anyhow...sorry for the ramble, but best way to check for bearing may be to see if gets noiser going one way round a bend compared to the other..mine certainly did....NB also had to replace the disc brake shields on mine last year....(2005 reg 80k miles). These are made from cheap / crap / thin metal and are prone to rusting away, (all 4 of mine did).....although I would have thought that these would have been picked up a matter of course when the brakes were done.....

IT USUALLY IS A STONE LODGED BETWEEN DISC AND SHIELD.

TAKE WHEEL OFF AND LOOK WITH A TORCH, USE A LONG SCREWDRIVER POKED BETWEEN DISC AND SHIELD TO REMOVE IT.

Check the bottom engine mount bolt at the drivers side???

If it's a trapped stone, you can sometimes remove it by either slaloming the car fairly violently, or reversing at high speed. That's how my son & I got rid of ours. Suggest you use a quiet road though :giggle:

take it to another garage!

Thank you folks for all your help.

Apologises for upper case text.

Turned out to be the rear disks and pads worn out/rusted.

They have since been replaced.

I have been driving for a week and it's as quiet as a door mouse.

I even drove to Manchester and back and no grinding sound.

Thank you again for responding to my tag.

It's nice of you to take the time and trouble to help me out.

Much appreciated.

Hi,

Did you find out what the problem is? Ive got almost identical problem on my Octavia VRS, noise coming from nearside front wheel, only when turning right. Its been in to the garage and they said it was the brake discs rubbing. Ive now had pads and discs replaced but still have the noise. Any suggestions?
