No, I deduced that from the torque curve on the graph I posted up...despite people questioning it's accuracy, I still maintain my belief that it is a good indication of the torque curve of the standard engine. Jon's peak will no doubt be at higher revs as he's had it remapped...

You need to change up at the point where the current gear is running out of power, and the next gear will still hit a nice high bit of the torque curve. Different gear ratios and engine characteristics will affect this. Different changes within the same gearbox will have different optimum points because the difference between the ratios will vary. What we need is

a) a dynoplot from a standard engine - someone must have one - the pre-remap curves on a remapped car will do

B) a list of the gear ratios for the vRS gearbox.

Then you can plot the bands on the dynoplot where the engine revs will be in 1st-2nd, 2nd-3rd, etc.

If you buy a Porsche this stuff is in the back of the handbook ;)

mine seems to be at 6400

that curve looks more like my TDI's torque/power plot. I very rarely go above 3000RPM, because the reality is there is not much point and I'd better off changing up and relying on the torque. :D

edited to say those rare occasions tend to be when trying to keep up with RS' & 4x4s down the M48 & M4. :rolleyes:

Well, they also have the same engine in the Superb:

Which would confirm that there isn't a good deal of point revving over 3k! :)

The first illustration cant be a TDI, as a factory TDI doesnt rev that high (top whack is aroung 4.5/5k) The second illustration is of my Superb,s pd130, and notice how the torque is strong on a flatish relationship which is far more important than its final HP output.

only 2500RPM - There's definitely point in going up to 3000RPM... if you change down at 2500RPM, the nest gear will be lucky to be spinning at 2000RPM and the turbo will not even start to kick in! Its definitely worth whacking the revs to 3000 / 3250 RPM, so changing up means you're still using the turbo, i.e at 2500RPM...

I meant it's not worth revving much over 3k...I wouldn't say 3250 was much over that... ;)

Andy - you're quite right, that is the 130bhp one, for some reason Skoda have stuck the same image in for both the 100 and 130! :rolleyes:

Should imagine the 100 is pretty similar though...

Except that the max torque is around 177ft/lb.....which would make it pretty gutless with all that extra metal on it (thats about 60ft/lb less than the pd130)

And did anybody who's had their car dyno'd have a big flat torque curve like that with a peak extending from 1800 to 5000 RPM? I personally haven't seen one..... certainly pre-remap.

Does seem a bit of a strange line for a car with a turbo though, as isn't this supposed to make the torque increase exponentially (or thereabouts)?

Actually, which engine is the 110kw one? Is that 150bhp? Maybe in Germany the turbos kick in lower and spin up quicker, so the initial steep rise is due to the turbo spinning up, then the flat is when the turbo is at full continuous boost?

Admittedly I know FA about turbos having never had the pleasure (well, apart from a TDi Focus, but it wasn't mine so I wasn't messing...)

Yup 110kW=~150bhp

I was only saying that the plots are just stylised representations, not an actual engine plot. You couldn't make a real engine behave like that, I'm sure.
