Car i'm looking at has gone to best offers!

Featured Replies

I've been enquiring about a 10-plate Combi Elegance and just heard back from the car place that is selling it saying that because of the amount of people interested in the car they've put a best offer process into place!!! Since when did car buying turn into house buying???  :o

I must admit it looks like a very, very nice car.... May 2010 10-plate, Elegance combi 1.8TSI DSG with park assist, heated screen & electric boot opening options and 28,000 miles on the clock.

From what i've found out myself the private sale price with the average 40k on the clock would be £10,250 and the retail price but adjusted for the lower mileage is £11,950.The place have been advertising it at £11,000...... Hmm what to do, what to do.......

If you really want it, call them now and make a high offer. Otherwise, wait and see...

Great Spec and TBH that spec wont come along very often so to me it's a case of do you really want that spec above elegance or can you do without some of the 3 optional extras?

Sounds great...

its not another beige car is it? :giggle:

I know Mark.... The thing i'm after the most is the park assist, (Basically for the all round sensors rather than the actual automatic parking), but finding a used one, even with just that option, within my budget without silly miles on the clock is proving rather difficult. I think i'll be putting an offer in but just trying to decide what it'll be.

The other niggle is that the car isn't actually at the place till next Monday and the highest bidder will not see the car in person and have a test drive in it till after the bid has been accepted!!!! They have a lot of high res photos of the car to view and it does look in very good condition etc... I've spoken with them again and they have said if there was anything wrong with the car they missed that when it came to a test drive etc....  the deposit would obviously be refunded, but not for something like "oh i didn't realise it was this colour" or "hmmm there's a couple of stone chips on the bonnet (of this 4 year old car)" etc, etc..... I've also got the reg so i'm toying with calling the dealership it was first bought from to check if they can give any info regarding any work the car has had done to it.

Can you not just ask the dealer for the price that they would be willing to remove it from sale or close their "process" early?  At worst they give you a silly number.  But it would give you an opportunity to get them back into a good old-fashioned negotiation, rather than this silly bidding nonsense.

Well.... Just spoke to the dealership it was bought from and they have gone through it's history and it's had nothing out of the ordinary and has been serviced normally. So that's one thing confirmed and out of the way.

I have already mentioned negotiations etc.... to them but they are set on the best offer process with the amount of interest they have in the car.

Assuming that you won the bidding process, the dealer would have to be very careful about not giving your money back should you change your mind (for any reason) under the Distance Selling Regulations.

Good luck though!

I would just walk into the dealer and tell them you're there to put the deposit down on the car...you never know, the salesperson you're dealing with might be in need of a close!

I've never come across a highest bid situation from any type of dealer. In fact apart from Ebay (never again would I use Ebay). It's a very unusual request from a car dealer and maybe its an old tactic to try and increase the price. There cant be that many people interested and if there was someone would have made an offer by now and bought it.

I've been looking around for my Dad and I know how hard it is to get a car with those options.

In fact within the hour he has decided to buy an L&K Superb Estate and apart from park assist even that hasn't got all the options the one your thinking of buying has. If you really want those options it looks like you are going to have to make a high offer or be patient. Good luck what ever you decide to do :)

Sounds like a right con to me! Call their bluff and tell them you 're not interested in their silly games and to call you when they want to deal in the old fashioned way.

This tactic would be enough to put me right off dealing with them full stop.

Worst case another car will come along, it's not as if it's an ultra rare car!!

That's exactly what I would do as well!

Surely it's their car, and from the sound of it, it's a sellers market for this particular model & its additional package.

It's up to them to decide how they want to sell it - all they are doing is a localised version of ebay, or indeed even the car auctions.

If I was the dealers, and had a queue of hopefuls interested in buying it, I'd be tempted to run an auction myself.

Every article on buying a car gives endless advice on how to negotiate the price down. They've found a very clever way to negotiate the price up.

I'm fairly sure that if you protest and complain that you don't like it, threaten to buy elsewhere etc., they will almost certainly shrug their shoulders and carry on the process without your involvement.

Seems daft. I always think - on eBay - what would I be annoyed at missing out on it for? If that's 11k I ask myself what about 11.1 etc gets to an answer pretty swiftly. I'd probably tell the dealer 2 figures: I want to pay X but I'd pay y not to miss it. That way you can 'assume' - if they say it's yours - the lower figure and have some wiggle room.

Wanna bet they 'magically' get a 3rd party interested in the car, and push the price right to Y?

They are a business. They have been at it for a long time. You will lose any game you play with them, the only thing you control is how much you are willing to lose (as in, how much you are willing to spend)

I would go elsewhere. I wouldn't trust a dealer regards anything.

Anyone else want to know what the outcome of this was?!

Dave???!!!

lol

I didn't bother putting an offer in to them in the end. Seemed too weird/dodgy. The car is still on various sites as for sale at £11,000 so if it's still there on Saturday (when the highest bidder was meant to be collecting the car by) I'm gonna get the mrs to call them and enquire about the Superb they have for sale. ;)

Never heard so much twoddle in my life.

It's a ploy, new one at that granted.

Tell them you want it but with a discount. Take it or leave it.

I DO NOT believe for one minute that there are many others straining at the leash for this car.

Sound like a bunch of gangsters to me. Steer clear if they don't accept your lower price offer..

Just my opinion of course.

edit. Sorry Wavey D. just seen your post above mine, doh.

The car is worth what YOU are prepared to pay for it. That is all.

Is it from a garage in Bakewell ?

Yes it is that one

I'd ring and see if it's still for sale, if it is, turn up and do a deal. If you have no part ex, even better. I've never known a seller turn away a deal when you are there in person. Most dealers want to sell and make money. Not keep a vehicle and wait for a better offer.
