V-power fuel... Not all that?

Featured Replies

I ran my Octavia on V Power diesel for 2000 miles as an experiment.

Average MPG was down (to be expected as it's cetane level is slightly lower than standard) but the exhaust was much less smoky. I didn't notice any difference in power. Basically I think it is a waste of money on a diesel and stopped using it.

Petrol V Power is a different story though.....it has a higher Octane rating than standard petrol and will give better performance if your engine is optimised for it.

Just put £40 of it in today. Gonna do 3 or so full tanks and see for myself

You'll need a few cycles of V-Power for the ECU to adjust.

as the ecu takes time to "read" it -

There is no ECU learning/adjustment on theses diesels :)

So if you do notice differences with V-Power in the tank it must just be due to a cleaner burn :)

Use a mixture of Esso, Texaco and Shell but never supermarket fuels.

No nectar points on shell fuel unfortunately mate, only BP. Shell drivers club points on shell fuel.

Ah, that was the classic example of a poster (me) not reading a posting fully - I will now go and hang my head in shame. Shell drivers cards annoyed me as when they were initially introduced, they seemed to screw up and I got a new card at each visit - though "stuff that!" - my currently nearest Shell place hands out Waitrose discount vouchers. Tesco points with Esso, a bit of a faff, logging the points slows down/cancels the credit card transaction - progress, not!  Brain has just remembered that the local filling station used to be Shell, then it changed to BP, which I used and got Nector points - but that one closed 6 months later, nothing seems to be easy!

I used normal unleaded in my 1.4 16v and it was gutless it couldn't climb hills anywhere no matter what the gradient was..I changed to nitro (v power) and over the past 6 months I've noticed smoother acceleration better mpg and reduced wear on the engine

I think that you are looking to be told to go and sit on the naughty step as you seem to have a 100PS version of that engine - well most people with that engine get told to do that on this forum! (I'm doing some one else's work by making that statement)

Glad to see that you have found it is good though.

On a similar note.

I always use esso diesel but the local supermarket always have offers on fuel when you spend a certain amount blah blah blah. Now r lass is asking why we can't fill up there. I keep telling her it's crap but she fires back with "it's only oil"

Is there any any actual reason not to use supermarket fuel?

Yeah when i first purchased the car (its my first) I had no idea it had to be run on super, and the previous owner not looking after the car made things even worse.

Being an inexperienced driver at that time i didnt realise how down on power the car had become because of all of the crap inside the engine.

Well, all fuels sold in UK, petrol and diesel, are refined in UK by any of the companies that used to refine fuel, though now maybe most of the refinery activities are owned by a separate company while being embedded in a Shell/BP/Esso "refinary complex".  Exception being, I think, Tesco who import petrol and diesel from Europort area in NL. As said many times, it is the "added at tanker stand" cocktails that make these fuels fit for use in modern engines.

As a petrolhead, I get a bit worried about exactly what is being added into the raw "fuel" by sellers that are not also world players in the fuel supply business as maybe the "Asdas Morrisons,Sainsburys" etc of this world have very little to lose if fuel sold from their branded fuel stations causes problems, users have short memories and will just continue to shop there but buy fuel elsewhere.

When a "big player" like Shell, Esso or BP messes up, people tend to remember a bit longer and change to another "big player" brand - so the Esso/BP/Shell fuel supply gets messed up.

Now you might think that as there are BS specs quoted on the pumps that all is good - wrong, as far as I know that BS refers only to the "raw" fuel, there is no watchdog body looking at the additives, so for me that is an issue rightly or wrongly.

Things might have changed, but, I remember the father of a friend of my daughter, worked in a car main dealer, and he was very sorry to say that they had made a lot of money out of decoking (petrol) engines after Sainbury (the first supermarket brand to sell their only branded fuel) came to town!  I used to use Asda fuel as it was originally Esso - then moved away from that when the Esso name disappeared but the same colour scheme remained, I also used Morrison's petrol until some people felt like they were having problems - ie a bit like needing a de-coke.

Some car marques, mainly from the Pacific rim and maybe Americas, seem to be more tolerant of low grade fuels.

I've had my mk1 Fabia VRS tdi for 13 months now. For the first 10 I only filled with v power diesel and after taking a drop in earnings went to esso standard diesel. Since then I have felt a decrease in throttle response, mpg and it runs "lumpy".... Definitely back on v power now despite the commute to the station and the extra cost.

Tell her you'll start doing that when she starts buying all her clothes/shoes/makeup/toiletries from Asda's value range and you think everything you eat should be Asda Farm Price or whatever it is. She'll soon take the hint. While yes, the vast majority of fuel is essentially the same it's the additive package that makes the difference. I'd have no worries about what the supermarkets put in as such, it's just going to be a more basic/less concentrated detergent package. The price difference between supermarket and branded stations is normally 0-2ppl, that's 90p per tank for a Fabia, I know times are hard for a lot of people, but if they ever get that bad that I need to worry about 90p i'm sure I could use the car less and save a lot more in other ways.

The difference is cost terms per mile (the only thing that really matters) will be negligible.

Perfect..

Thanks.

I have been running power diesel for a few years now. A combination of that and the map I have has resulted in my car being such a clean runner, even when pushing it on a circuit.

Here's a video from the spring action day at castle Combe. My car is directly in front of the filming octavia

Gonna give V Power nitro a go i think. Always used that or momentum 99 in the 86'.

I pay 1.43 for v power diesel at haydock shell garage. I was in a bp garage the other day and noticed bp ultimate was 1.59!!!

I filled my tank Friday and drove up to Coventry with shell normal diesel, on my return filled it up again at the same garage VRS took 26litres to fill, mileage was 284 miles round trip, was happy with that. Previously run on Tesco for a couple of weeks, i have notice that I used to get a further 50 miles more on v-power diesel when I was doing 60 miles a shift.

Who is the person driving the Octavia? Someone on here?

V-power Nitro Diesel is my fuel of choice, but yesterday I had to fill up with BP Ultimate, as to my surprise most of my local Shell forecourts have shutdown!

What's goin on - have they gone bust or somethin?

Yes, his user name is DaveandLolli

Done about 5 full tanks of it now I think. Can't say I've noticed any difference at all to be honest.

Going to keep using it though

Continuing from Avalons discussion above

Yes people do go on about their struggles etc, will be the same that will buy cage chicken over free range "its cheaper isn't it" and they can't afford to pay proper prices for good food or to give the milk farmer enough to survive etc.

They will probably say that whilst they have a fag in their gob or latest smartphone in their hand etc. It seems to be about priorities and unfortunately people priorities do seem to be a bit swayed nowadays don't they.

I don't rely on V stuff all the time but do like the occasional tanks if it might have any improved detergent effect etc. Though I wonder if this kind of intermittent use has any benefit on not using it at all. Certainly do tend to avoid the supermarkets as much as poss although I'd suspect the diesels are a bit more tolerant than the petrols (esp. the ones needing high octane) on poor fuel

Used to run all my diesel cars on Shell v power .... but when it changed to v power nitro the engine just seemed to choke on it .... gone over to using the BP premium diesel and it is much better... tried some premium Esso last week and again all OK ... don't think I will be using Shell again

The cleaning affects over 1000km have been shown by BP for petrol iirc, have a look on the BP site.

Sorry for Jacking the post but didn't think I should start another while this was running. I've got a 1.4 16v, I know it has to run of high grade fuel, but what brand do you all think is best? I've got a bp, esso and Tesco which all sell the super unleaded, but which should I use? As the nearest shell is 20 miles away

I'm going to try a few tanks on shell v power now after reading this. Will have to wait a few weeks though because its got a full tank of Esso in it at the minute!

In my experience ASDA fuel is absolutely awful, it doesn't last very long at all and god does the car let you know its not happy you've given it ASDA fuel to drink, sounds pretty rough.

Esso fuel however, I think seems to be the best alternative to vpower and the likes, but that's just my experience, it seems to last a long time. Haven't used normal shell diesel though because if every I'm in a shell garage its STANDARD surely to get the good stuff!

Ran mine on a rolling road last year prior to a mufflerectomy and it was running shell vpower and all the other diesels had the smoke extractor strapped to them and I asked that mine didn't and so mine was sat there unmolested like the petrol cars and all I could hear from people including the dyno guys was "I cant believe its a diesel" because no smoke came out!
