Change head unit to get handsfree and maybe GPS

Nice write up Phil.

I have never seen the module wedged in there before!!

The only thing with that position is its where the mdi module goes if you ever decide to fit that....

Hehe. I like to make life easy for myself and couldn't be bothered trying to get the wires through to under the seat etc.

Nah I'm not bothered about MDI. I can easily update the music on SD card, have aux-in and a 6 disc changer in the boot... that's more than enough!

Yes its a bit of overkill but it has its uses as it charges the device too. I got one cheap from a Superb being broken locally and fancied a challenge getting two quadlocks in behind the Columbus....

But I see your logic. That bit taking the module under the seat is a proper pain and it skins your knuckles!!

Yeah they're not the smallest connectors are they?!

Phil

No indeed. Kbphoto combined the two looms to solve it but I managed to jam them both in to the left of the Columbus cage.

You can now actually buy a combined mdi and bt module with a single loom.

I did indeed and basically created a combined MDI & BT loom.

Nicely done though. Yours. Not mine.

Nice work Phil. Similar to where I located the BT module on mine. Could see no benefit going to the hassle of putting it under the seat, when there's more accessible locations available!

Exactly. I looked and though "stuff that!".

Plus I thought with getting in and out the car in winter there is the potential for getting it wet.

Just need to get Sven's phone working with it now... I may have to root it first like mine!

Hi All,

I pick my car up on Friday and will start to get the bits together needed for the upgrade.

Quick questions - As I have looked at different Columbus head units they have slightly different model numbers. How do I know what number to go for and whats the difference how do I age a unit?

Examples - Whats the difference?

2013 Skoda Columbus RNS 510 B SAT LED 40GB V10 MAPS Superb Rapid Fabia TV FREE 2013 Skoda Columbus RNS 510 E SAT LED 40GB V10 MAPS Superb Octavia Yeti TV FREE

Good helpful thread this...will be useful when I find a unit to fit my Bolero in the FL.

As for those suggestions above, I think I'd source a UK one. You'll be able to trace its origins better. Some, but not necessarily those above, have been known to be, er, nicked.

Hi Phil,

It would appear that my display is non Maxidot. Is this going to be a problem for me?

You just need to avoid kits that require maxidot then.

The premium (730 D I think) kits need maxidot.

But not entirely sure which definitely don't need it as I was looking for kits that would work with maxidot.

Phil

You need a 5k0...d or 7p6 kit. This only does hands free protocol but without maxidot that is all you can do and anyway it works with all phones and does the most important stuff.

Thanks Phil, Briskodian

Would you mind educating me please

When you say Kit does that mean the head-unit, Blue-tooth or both items?

The kit I refer to is the module, loom and mic. The numbers I referred to relate to the module, the loom and mic is generic for all. Check out www.carsystems.pl.

You will still need a suitable headunit e.g. the Columbus or Bolero.
