Upgrading my multimedia (Symphony MFD)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've seen a few threads relating to upgrading the Superb's sound and vision, but i've come across some kit i'm thinking of getting and would appreciate any advice :)

I've found a few things on Ebay that i'm thinking of using to upgrade the multimedia capabilities in my Superb, these are:

About £70 - Multimedia interface thing with a connection for an external camera - this connects to the round port on the back of the MFD i think?

£17-69 - wireless rear camera, which should connect straight to the multimedia thing above at the front end (and my reverse light at the back)

About £40 - device to replace my Multichanger, with a USB port, SD card slot and 3.5 port for ipod/etc

What do you guys reckon, any of you use this kit, or recommend any other options?

Thanks,

Dez

I added a reversing camera using this method and found it very useful for parking. Wouldn't be without it now.

Intresting little audio box. Personally I went for the Phatanoise unit which is very old hat but once sorted is great and they are not that dear on ebay now. The software works faultless on windows XP though and it just seems to depend on the PC weather or not it works on windows 7.

IF you go for that audio box can you let us know how it works and weather its any good.

Thanks Nackuk. does the phatnoise just plug straight into the multichanger plug in the boot?

Yes (if it comes with the correct lead).

There are two leads available - an Audi one round and a VW SKoda one rectangluar.

You want one with this lead.

Hey Nackuk. how do you navigate around your tracks on the phatnoise? and what capacity does it have? looks like a giant sd card/usb stick in the middle of it?

Cheers

To change the artist you press the CD button 4.

Then select the artist using the foward back buttons. Over the speakers it reads out the artist. To go throught them qucikly you hold the button down and it says A B C and goes throuth the Alphabet. To select you just release the button and after four seconds it beeps and then starts playing the artists music.

CD button 3 selects album in the same manner.

I think CD button 5 does play lists if you do your music that way,

CD button 3 does Gener

CD button 6 is set up.

It works really well.

The hardest part and pain in the arse bit is making the music library on your pc first with the phatnoise software.

The unit is a removal hard drive. So yeah a prehistoric ipod unit basicaly. You take it out of your car and put it in a dock connected to your PC. Transfer the music via phata noise software. Then put it back in your car.

Most units are 20gb. If you want though and you follow the correct procedure on a web site you can change the drive to 120GB. Its called phat hacking. I've done it to mine works a treat.

So good I put one in my MX5 too!

Phatnoise went to pie in the sky a long time ago and a guy keeps a website alive.

Cheers for the info mate, i've gone ahead and ordered the things i listed and i'll try and capture some pics etc as i put it in.

just one more question, do you think there is space behind the black strip with the parking sensors on for me to drill a hole through in the middle for the camera?

I haven't really had a poke around under mine yet so any advice would be appreciated!
