So what is the best all round VAG engine?

Featured Replies

Anybody have any experience with the 1.4 TSi Turbo in the new Polo BlueGT? 140 bhp (ps) with ACT (cylinder deactivation) giving it 61mpg, 107g/km cheap road tax, whilst keeping a modest 7.6s 0-60mph time (3dr DSG).

Looks like a perfect car for the missus when the price comes down. Any word on it being used in any other VAG cars?

Also used in the current Golf, A3, Leon and Octavia (though without the cylinder deactivation in the Leon and Octavia).

2.0 16v abf, simply a masterpiece of an engine

  • For reliability and overall robustness its got to be the 1.9 PD unit for me. For a good all rounder with good tuning potential Id go with the 1.8T.

1.4tsi twin charger............. Just kidding! The 1.9PD BLT gets my vote.

I had a 1.9 PD 130 engine and it broke at 78k miles despite FSH.  My 2.0 PD 170 engine went in a similar fashion.  I am hoping that my current 2.0 PD 140 is a little better or I will never buy VAG derv again.

I had a 1.8T with 180bhp in a Leon Cupra and it averaged 32ish and felt plenty fast enough.  Other than the brake vacuum pipe failing it was pretty reliable.

Yep, powerful, efficient, reliable, so underrated.

A reliable one. That's all thanks.

Non PD TDi probably the 110 ASV lump. Bulletproof, massivley tweakable, economical, and easy to work on.

the bomb proof 1.9SDI that was in our old works caddy van apparently its nearing 500k with its current owner.....

Having done over 300k in a Fabia (135k) and a Polo (173k) I really miss that seamless power delivery.  There aren't too many engines which will let you pull away from rest in 5th at tickover.  My daughter took the Fabia up to 210k after I gave it to her, all without problems.

OK it only has 63bhp but an overall 54mpg, mainly with learners, ain't too shabby.

Wouldn't this thread have been better if it had a poll?

My vote goes for the 4.2 V8 in the RS4.

I'd second the ASV tdi unit. Never the most refined but frugal, simple and offers a reasonable pace when out and about.

Or the 1.8 KR, a fantastically aggressive engine.

The PD 130's only break when they are not serviced at the correct times, with also the best oil avail. Camshaft wear happens on the PD150s due to design no matter what!

Thinking about it yes I was on tapatalk at the time so i didn't consider that!

Air cooled. Yeahhhhh

Ironically I was thinking how much I disliked the unrefined nature and lumpy power delivery of my pd150.

I also found the 1.8t to be massively soulless.

The abf on the other hand I like.

Oh and pd130's and pd150's share the exact same camshaft and other components

So its an urban myth

And the pd150 has stronger head bolts so it must be better

PD130/150 motors are fantastic all rounders, decent MPG, reliable if not abused/over tuned but I agree with Joe, standard map is awful, after mapping mine I couldnt believe how bad the stock one is, massive dollop of power at 1900rpm and nothing before or after.

Having had the Mrs Octavia now for 6 months or so I've slowly got use to petrol power and having to rev it :D I have to say it's lovely and smooth, quiet and provides reasonable power when needed. It's done 160,000 miles and runs sweet, it might not be the most exciting engine or most powerful but again, decent all rounder IMO.

Newer motors of each? PD170 was a bit of a dog, 2.0TFSI seems ok, my mates Audi is doing well, again maybe not too exciting or characterful but does the job. I've not had much experience of other stuff tbh. Should imagine the RS6 5.0 V10 is tasty, as is the older 2.7 Bi turbo :D

I would go for the PD130 as well.  Just look at Jasons, standard bottom end.   The engine that is.

Fair enough.

A decent "all rounder" - meaning it has a bit of everything? Well that's obviously the 1.8t then.

- Fast

- Petrol

- Reliable

- Half-decent MPG

- Highly tunable

- Bulletproof

Any 1.9 tdi and the 1.8T :)

Not so much "all round" as "around and around"...

3.6L V6 TDI in the Audi R18.

For road use... Q7 with a V12 TDI.... Even with a diesel though, only if I win a fuel for life competition. :sun:

1.8 8v engine as found in the last of the mk1 Golf GTIs I think the code was 'DX'

I have that in mine but the 1.8 bottom end has been changed to a 2.0 which gives it that little extra grunt. It'll give a remapped vrs a run for its money.

Great engine but a lot better when you put it into a mk 1 or a mk 2, the mk 3 was a little to heavy a car for 150Bhp but 150bhp in a car that weighs less than a ton equals a lot of fun.

Saying that, the kr in the mk 2 16v was a brilliant engine, it takes abuse all day long and still puts a smile on your face and other cars in your rear view. The k-jet surge from 4000rpm up to the red line was ultra addictive a so fun. Really miss that car.

Indeed. My thoughts are the ABF is a great engine that got put in a load of not-so-great cars. Yeah, it's not particularly interestting, but it does what you want an engine to do really well. The KR is a great drive, but it's thirsty and K-Jet gets on my nerves.

Personally, I prefer 8V engines to 16V's because they suit my driving style better. I've had a few 8V GTI's and been underwhelmed by the DX, to the extent that I actually prefer the carb'd 1.8 8V that my Rocco had in (EX?).

1.8T's are admirable in that they were the start of turbo'd petrol engines being accessible to most people (even if that has ended with everyone wanting a 1.0T Focus or something equally ridiculous), but if I'm driving something with a turbo, I like to know it's got one, and they just don't deliver that for me.

I think VAG takes the view that the 2.0T is the best all rounder as they put it in everything. Except, sadly, not my Yeti.

Its a fantastic engine, the things it will cope with. Docile at 30 one second, battering along flat out the next. A consumate all-rounder in a place you'd never expect to find it. More than once has held onto a Mk6 GTi too.

TBs make it all the better. Thirstier but better. I've encountered the 1.8 8v carb ('85 B19 EN) and it was a grunty little beast around town but the 16v destroys it out in the open.
