a VERY slow coolant loss/leak?

Featured Replies

Sorry to start a new thread as there are so many related to coolant loss! ive read through them all now I think!

Basically im losing coolant from the max to minimum line every 4 tanks of fuel maybe even more so its a very slow gradual loss.

Its never enough for the coolant light to come on, and there are no other symptoms really to describe, everything seems fine!

Now reading through all the threads im thinking;

1. new cap and bottle

2. radiator?

can anyone suggest anything else?

Thanks,

Ben

Check the heater pipes where they go through the bulkhead, quite common.

'K Seal' has been my friend for the past 6 years now.

Very slight leak at the bottom of the rad, (common apparently)  and it did the trick, and continues to do so for me.

All depends where the coolant is escaping I suppose

Bottom hose connection onto rad, get a new seal :)

If you take undertray off you will prob spot the staining around the pipe from the anti freeze.

The last time I used a stop leak product in an engine, I ended up with gummed up water ways internally and the car run much hotter as a result.

Had no problems with 'K Seal' in 6 years as previously stated.

Marvelous stuff with good reviews. Not cheap though unlike some of the more gundgy products available.

My vote coolant pipe to bulk head. That was my problem

Dont happen to have a picture do you?

I think a few of us have this. I believe a tightening of the fan thermostat connector may fix where the washer is missing from factory production, otherwise if its a leak right at the bottom then you can get a rad from ECP for less than £30 if it makes you sleep better. PITA fitting it though, but relatively easy once you follow the radiator removal guide

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Will try and source this leak later on with all the suggestions.

Thermostat housing?

Yeah the link mogwye  posted is the one.

Easy to spot. Drive around for a bit. then wait about 20min for engine to cool down. Then look behind the engine for the two pipes and you should see damp patch below. You wont see it straight away as the heat from engine drys the coolant.

The VAG G12 coolant has a pinkness to it that should leave tell tale signs of where it's been leaking. Probably need a look up from underneath with a good torch.
