VCDS coding in Central Scotland

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just thought I would make you aware that if you're in Central Scotland and want some coding done on your Octavia, SWR in Stirling would be able to do this for you.

I had mine done yesterday and I'm happy with the result. I'm not sure how much they would charge you for this (as I know the owners I didn't need to pay). Obviously they will accept no responsibility should any issues arise, however if you stick to the instructions you should be fine.

So far I have the following enabled:

Cornering fog lights

Lap timer

Refuelling quantity

Passenger mirror dip on reverse

DRL's flashing intermittently with indicators

Fan blower speed displaying on auto

Hope this helps people looking to make the changes.

Cheers

Col

I'll keep this in mind. Thanks for the info.

No worries, glad it may be of some use.

Let me know the address so I can send them the invoice, assuming they have plagiarised my work :)

Nothing worse than companies charging for something that the community has created.

Andy I've gotta take my hat off to you for your commitment, I had mine on a VCDS yesterday and after Tim had downloaded the lastest software 12.12.6 was it ?, 230 odd data points F me thats a shedload of poking about you've gotta be doing.

Naw you keep on with the good work, its appreciated by many I'm sure.

230?

Adaptation channels for the BCM (Controller 09) currently runs at 1770!

Infotainment (5F) - 800+

Thats before you start looking at the coding as well, most of which is still undocumented in VCDS (or in Polish or German in VCP).

It was a tongue in cheek comment anyway :) but with a serious point - I do this for the fun of it, and if people want to bung me a tenner or a bottle of Jack then thats a bonus, but companies shouldn't be charging for this stuff that many many enthusiasts will do for free.

For instance, I am currently sending logs to Ross-Tech so that they can get more info on the MQB platform as it isn't available in the US yet, plus to try and help them solve the coding of the RLFS so that rain closing can be enabled with VCDS. It took me over an hour to pull every adaptation map from my car to send to them, do I ask them to pay me for my time, no, as in the end it benefits us all, and when I need some support from Ross-Tech on something I might jump the queue a little :)

Forgive my ignorance Andy, a lot of what was said yesterday went WOOOOOOOOOOOSH straight over my head but, once I'd explained fully what I wanted to know, Tim quickly got to the answers.

Andy - what sort of skills are required for VCDS? Programmer, competent software user, or total bodger that doesn't read the manual? I'm not expecting it to be the third option, but does a manual exist?

Thinking of giving it a bash - I was a coder but my skills are historic, so it would be nice to know what competencies are required.

VCDS is very easy to actually use, an understanding of hex and binary helps a some changes require manually changing binary values if a checkbox doesn't exist.

To make changes that others have documented you don't really need to know how to do anything other than follow instructions as the software is pretty intuitive.

To boldly go etc. you need to have an understanding and interest in vehicle electronics systems, just how the bits fit together at a high level, nothing more. You can gain the rest by reading various forums, and an ability to translate German and Polish to English using Google translate helps :)

The worst you can do is **** something up on your car, but the majority of changes are reversible, so keeping a record of what you are doing is a good idea. Some changes are not reversible though, so knowing/finding out what those are is a good idea as well, but VCDS usually has an associated warning (Byte 18 of BCM on A5 platform for example).

The biggest thing at the moment is that the MQB platform is a step change from the previous platforms, so more and more is being discovered on a daily basis.

Thanks, that's pretty helpful - think I'll give it bash!

Hi Andy, I should point out that I took the instructions with me and took them away with me as well, I also didn't say where I got them from. So anyone going to the garage would need to do the same.

Don't worry I wasn't about to let them charge for the work he community has done, but they will charge other people for their time as there's not many people in Central Scotland (that I'm aware of) that will make the vcds changes.

Cheers

I live about 20miles south of glasgow and have vcds. Have used it on my mk2 fl vrs and various other vag cars. It is the full version so willing to help anyone who is local. Haven't used it on any mqb platforms yet but if people have the relevant instructions then easy enough to do so.

It was a tongue in cheek comment, probably didn't come across as such :)

But a valid point none the less mate :)

On this point, (completely new to me) could I find someone to add various 'extras' to my car? Is it really that easy?

Yep
