Mileage- what'd you get?

Featured Replies

I'm driving to Dover (from Durham) next weekend in the Fabia. (It's the 1.4 Elegance.) Never done a really long trip in it so I'm curious what mileage people are getting? Trip computer tells me I get into the 48-50mpg range on motorway trips but I'm not sure I believe it! :)

Cheers!

1.4 petrol or diesel?

I average 56-65 on the mfd, probably not very realistic though lol

I average just over 60 in my 1.4TDI but the longest motorway trip I've been on is about 20-30 miles

Petrol, sorry. Sure I added that. :)

Also, how much are people paying to fill up their tanks?

Since purchase 2-and-a-bit years ago the car in my profile has done 24200 miles on 2705 litres, a long term true average of about 40.7 mpg.  Bit disappointed compared to what Skoda claim for the 1.2 12v (47-48?), but pretty decent considering a significant portion of the mileage is urban/suburban.

Only way to really compare mpgs is to record every litre that goes into the tank, and every mile done, then do the sums.

I'm not that organized! :) Might actually do it over this trip though. Be interesting to see what MPG I'm actually getting on the motorway.

I have a spreadsheet to log all my fill-ups and MPG but I am a bit of a geek. You can also make a fuelly account which is quite good, here is my dashboard:

£50 fills the tank up. I'll get 40mpg on the motorway, if I'm lucky. That's in the 1.4 mpi

It's a 45 litre tank so whatever you pay per litre times by how much fuel goes in :)

I went from  UK to slovakia and back so about 2400miles. doing autobahn speed 90+mph got about 50 mpg. Not sure if that helps as yours is different engine Mines 1.9tdi pd100 elegance,

And just to add that if it's the 1.4 16v 100bhp it is recommended to run it on 98 ron (Super unleaded) petrol.

I have a bit of a lead foot which doesn't help! Tend to cruise at 75ish. :) (Basically keeping up with everyone else though!)

Around 40mpg on motorway or clear A road provided revs kept mostly below 3k. A lot less around town...so much so that I have been afraid to calculate...would be too depressing !!

I've got 73.6mpg on the trip with cruise set at 2000rpm (67/68mph) on a 230mile motorway run.

I regularly get 50mpg on the trip on my work commute if I drive Eco.

I only use Super plus (shell V-power) & get around 42 to 45mpg on a short 38mile round trip on back roads, 45 to 52mpg on a long motorway stretch.

I went for about a 200 mile run a month or so ago and my computer round town showed about 275 full..which moved to over 400 on the motorway and when i actually got back home i think it was still at 300m remaining - ive got the 1.4 16v elegance she does quite well on fuel !

Haven't done a longer term average with any apps etc, but off the car itself It's about mid 30s (mostly short runs). Up to about 40 if I'm sensible or just under 30 if I hoof it about. Could do with a service and have a few niggly things needing fixed though so could probably be better.

Had been planning on trying it with the Tesco 99 but they don't stock it where I am, not very good availability of anything Super in NI.

Octavia's about the same, maybe a little better.

Thought I'd bring this back from the dead a little - I've recently noticed that I can average MPG in the high 40's according to my trip computer (I know it's not accurate), compared to high 30's a few months before. It's had new tyres since I last posted I believe (and maybe a service, though I can't really remember when that was). So perhaps new tyres and the garage maybe putting more pressure in them than the manual says to? (I haven't actually checked) has done me quite a bit of good in terms of fuel consumption, though the tank still empties fairly quickly. Managed 400 miles off a tank last weekend.

I could possibly do that too, but my motorway trips have been  about ten times that ,and on a 500 mile trip( on mixed roads) a drop of 10 mpg is acceptable (IMHO)for achieving a decent good progress factor. Average in all conditions is about 50 -55 . Today ,in Sainsbury Tamworth ,I got DERV at 129.9.

The absolute top tips for saving fuel are:

Inflate your tyres to the pressures specified for driving the vehicle fully laden.

Don't use the aircon.

Keep well away from peak torque, in mine that means driving on the motorway at 70mph in top gear which is 3500rpm, the engine starts to come on the cam at 3750rpm and peak torque is at 4400rpm.

Doing these things and using super unleaded means I average over 50mpg on a run.

Even with really ruthless B-road thrashing it doesn't drop below 35mpg average.

I've been on a few longer trips recently of over 150 miles - mainly motorways and A-roads. I get about 60-65mpg keeping to speed limits. Economy drops off slightly if I do 80mph and the engine feels a bit stressed out at those speeds; i.e. revving at around 3k. The best I've ever got was 67mpg on a long 60mph road. I have the AC on nearly all the time as well!

Couple of months back my mile o meter had said that I had done 400 miles on half a tank of diesel, I do the brim method, but only managed 520 miles on that tank fill using shell diesel. When I use tesco fuel I don't get the same miles as shell. It's hit of miss on the mileage that people do as driving conditions, age of vehicle, service of vehicle, mileage of vehicle, mapped.
